In the past two weeks we have discussed demand destruction as a result of soaring oil prices (here and here), and we are increasingly seeing anecdotal evidence of just that (here is a table from Goldman we showed previously, laying out where demand destruction is most acute). We start, as always, with Asia which has emerged as ground zero of the global energy crisis – as a reminder last week we first presented a map by JPMorgan’s resident commodity expert who how the shockwave from the Iran war spreads across the world, hitting Asia first, then Africa and Europe, before settling on the US, but mostly California. European jet fuel trades around $1713/tonne, up 114% since the war began. Singapore fuel is up around 140%. The conflict ⁠in ⁠the Middle East could be its make-or-break moment to take the technology global. The French government has stepped in to stop the sale of a newly identified drawing by Hans Baldung, according to the Art Newspaper, throwing a last-minute wrench into what was shaping up to be a major Old Master auction in Paris. The small portrait, dated to 1517 and attributed to the German Renaissance artist, was slated to hit the block at French auction house Beaussant Lefèvre, carrying an estimate of $1.74 million to $3.5 million. Two days before the auction, France’s culture ministry declared it a national treasure, triggering a 30-month export ban and effectively pulling it off the market.  Related Articles That kind of intervention is rare but not unheard of in France, where the state can halt sales to give local institutions time to raise funds and keep important works in the country. In this case, the stakes are unusually high. The attacks on upstream oil/gas assets across the Middle East this week sparked turmoil across global energy markets.  Israel set off the chain reaction with its attack on Iran’s South Pars gas field on Wednesday morning, followed by Iran’s retaliatory strikes on Qatar’s LNG plant, Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea export hub, and other targets across the surrounding Gulf states. Update (1335ET): US Energy Secretary Chris Wright has confirmed, through a statement he posted on X that the US will not be baning oil or gas exports… Thanks to @POTUS, the United States is the world’s top oil and natural gas producer. British officials are trying to keep a major painting by the late London-born artist Howard Hodgkin from leaving the UK. Last week, the country’s Department for Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS) placed an export ban on Mrs Acton in Delhi (1967–71), giving a British museum or gallery the chance to buy it instead. The move comes after the work sold at Bonhams in London last October for £1.7 million (around $2.3 million), setting a new auction record for Hodgkin. Hodgkin began the painting just three years after his first trip to India, a place that captivated him from childhood through to the end of his life.
