The extraordinary story of William Ap Howel who had 43 children over 81 years | History | News

In this sparsely populated parish, the man managed to father 43 children (Image: Chris Andrews/Wiki) He savoured life’s modest joys and discovered satisfaction in angling and cultivating his vegetable garden. Dairy products formed the backbone of his meals, whilst his leisure hours were spent enjoying a spot of fowling. Church records show he reached the extraordinary age of 105, maintaining keen mental faculties and recollection throughout an existence that was, by conventional standards, rather unremarkable. He could easily have slipped into historical anonymity but for one astounding accomplishment: across 81 years, he fathered 43 children. This achievement, if it can be described as such, brought considerable fame to the tiny parish of Tregaian on Anglesey. The memory of William Ap Howel lives on in the churchyard of the village’s 14th-century church, devoted to a saint considerably less recorded than its most famous parishioner. When travel author Thomas Pennant traversed Anglesey during the late 18th century, carefully chronicling the copper workings of Parys Mountain, he deemed it necessary to reference the island’s most productive father in his …

Gisèle Pelicot’s Extraordinary Memoir – The Atlantic

Gisèle Pelicot’s Extraordinary Memoir – The Atlantic

One afternoon in 2024, when her session in court had ended unusually early, Gisèle Pelicot went to the Leclerc supermarket in Carpentras, a picturesque town in Provence. She asked to meet the security guard who, four years earlier, had confronted her husband, Dominique, after observing Dominique trying to use his phone to film up the skirts of unsuspecting female shoppers. The guard had been irate at the time. He had been thinking, he later told the Daily Mail, about his mother and sister, who shopped at that supermarket and might have been vulnerable to this creep with a cameraphone. Police officers who arrested Dominique Pelicot went to his home, seized his personal devices, and found more than 20,000 images and videos of Dominique—and of other men he had invited into his home—raping his drugged wife. Gisèle Pelicot wanted to thank the guard, who she believes saved her life. Prior to her husband’s arrest, her physical health had been deteriorating due to almost a decade of being drugged and violently assaulted. Had no one intervened, she …

Timing of Palace’s latest Andrew statement is extraordinary – don’t underestimate the significance

“New facts meant the need for a new response” – that is how one palace source described this latest statement and why it was issued now. The timing was still extraordinary. Do not underestimate how significant it is that it was released just a matter of hours after Prince William had landed in Saudi Arabia. Usually there’s an unwritten rule that nothing should ever overshadow an important diplomatic visit like this. But there was a sense in the palace that something had shifted over the weekend in terms of the allegations against Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor – and no response wasn’t an option. No one is trying to diminish the sexual claims that have emerged, which Andrew has denied. The Royal Family has repeatedly said we must think of Epstein’s victims. However, the claims that he may have been sharing information with Epstein – information he gained in his official capacity as a UK trade envoy – go to the very heart of the role of the Royal Family; travelling the globe on behalf of UK plc, …

My Life With Kenneth Williams review – raconteur resurrected by an extraordinary mimic | Theatre

My Life With Kenneth Williams review – raconteur resurrected by an extraordinary mimic | Theatre

It will be 100 years next month since Kenneth Williams’ birth, and almost 30 since David Benson created his hit show about him, Think No Evil of Us – versions of which he has toured ever since. Here’s another one marking the centenary, and, more resurrection than mimicry, it can’t help but be striking to anyone who grew up with the raconteur, diarist and Carry On star as a mainstay of British life. There are ever fewer of us around, mind you: this is “a boomer show”, Benson admits, as strong on nostalgia as it is on insight into what made Williams tick. Indeed the first act is more about what made 13-year-old Benson tick. In 1975, his winning entry in a Jackanory story competition was read by Williams on national TV. We see him relive the moment, mortified that he’d now be associated by school bullies with the campest man in the UK. Elsewhere in act one, Benson recounts his adolescent awakening as an exponent of funny voices, casually deploying his note-perfect Frankie Howerd, …

How to be an extraordinary Christian during Ordinary Time

How to be an extraordinary Christian during Ordinary Time

(RNS) — With Christmas season over, Christians move into what the church refers to as “Ordinary Time.” This is the time outside of Christmas season, Lent and Easter season. “Ordinary” in English means “routine, usual, common.” In other words, nothing special. But the name “Ordinary Time” originally comes from the fact that the weeks are numbered using ordinal numbers — like first, second or third. For example, last Sunday was the Second Sunday in Ordinary Time. This year, there are six Ordinary Sundays before we reach Lent. We then do not return to Ordinary Time until after Pentecost; Ordinary Time then continues until Advent, for a total of 34 weeks in Ordinary Time this year. But there is no reason that Ordinary Time must be ordinary. It can be special if we use it to deepen our experience of the Scriptures and prayer. Catholics should be embarrassed by how little they read the Scriptures. According to Pew Research Center, only 12% of Catholics read the Scriptures at least once a week, compared with 52% of evangelical …

Russia calls Trump’s threats to take over Greenland ‘extraordinary’

Russian President Vladimir Putin speaks during his annual joint call-in-show and press conference, on December 19, 2025 in Moscow, Russia. Contributor | Getty Images News | Getty Images Russia called the Trump administration’s threats to take over Greenland “extraordinary” on Friday, adding it would continue monitoring the situation. “The situation is unusual, I would even say extraordinary from the standpoint of international law,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, according to comments reported by Russian state news outlet Ria Novosti. U.S. President Donald Trump has talked up acquiring Greenland, a self-governing Danish territory, since a daring military operation to depose Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on Jan. 3. He said the U.S. needs Greenland for national security and that only Washington can counter an alleged threat from Russia and China to the island. Peskov added that Trump “has said that international law is not a priority for him. The situation is developing along a different trajectory, and we, along with the rest of the world, will be watching to see which one.” A spokesperson for the Kremlin was …

The Extraordinary Symbolism Behind Carl Jung’s Child Archetype

The Extraordinary Symbolism Behind Carl Jung’s Child Archetype

Carl Jung proposed that within each person exist timeless and potent underlying patterns known as archetypes. One of these is what he called the Child Archetype. It is not simply a memory of childhood but an innate part of us all, symbolizing innocent beginnings and unlimited potential (though also including unfulfilled wishes and a capacity for being wounded). This figure appears in dreams, myths, and popular culture—stories that offer healing shifts in perspective if we pay attention to their messages.   The Child Archetype in Jungian Psychology: An Overview Child with a Dove, Pablo Picasso, 1901. Source: PabloPicasso.org   The Child Archetype in Jungian psychology symbolizes far beyond youth. It represents innocence, beginnings, and the potential of what we can be.   Carl Jung believed that this archetype resided deep within our unconscious minds and manifested in dreams, myths, and bedtime stories as a sign that new beginnings and unrealized potentials were nearby.   Two versions of the child regularly appear. One is full of wonder and capability (“divine child”), while the other has strength …
