She died two weeks later at age 81 from infections and bedsores, according to her death certificate. Her daughter sued the nursing home, alleging it had left Darby sitting in her own feces and urine time and again. The lawsuit, settled on confidential terms last year, blamed not only the managers of City Creek Post-Acute and Assisted Living but also the building’s owner, a real estate investment trust, or REIT. In the year Darby died, City Creek paid CareTrust REIT more than $1 million in …

Oil prices rise after strikes on Saudi oil facilities

Oil prices rise after strikes on Saudi oil facilities

BEIJING, April 10 : Oil prices rose in early trading on Friday following attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure, and as markets evaluated the risk premium from the ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz, despite a fragile truce agreed between the U.S. and Iran. Brent crude futures gained 83 cents, or 0.87 per cent, to $96.75 a barrel as of 0100 GMT. West Texas Intermediate futures were up $1.04, 1.06 per cent, at $98.91 a barrel. “The initial wave of relief following President Trump’s two-week ceasefire announcement has quickly given way to underlying doubts,” IG market analyst Tony Sycamore said in a note. Iran and the U.S. agreed on Tuesday to a two-week ceasefire brokered by Pakistan, but fighting was still taking place following the announcement. “All eyes remain firmly on tanker tracker flows through the Strait of Hormuz for any signs of increased activity ahead of peace talks scheduled in Pakistan on Friday,” Sycamore said. Analysts say Pakistan will try to push in the talks for a more durable peace agreement but may lack the leverage needed to …

Singapore’s public sector to reduce electricity consumption at government facilities amid Middle East crisis

In a ministerial statement in parliament on Tuesday, Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong noted the impact of the Middle East conflict on energy supplies and global trade. While Singapore’s GDP growth in the first three months of the year was resilient, Mr Gan said, growth will likely be affected in the coming quarters. Due to the increased oil and natural gas prices, a sharper increase in the regulated electricity tariff is also expected next quarter. In a video message last week, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong urged businesses and households to play their part by conserving energy and reducing unnecessary consumption and waste, stressing that national resilience depends not just on government action but also on collective effort. “For businesses, this means reviewing operations and improving energy efficiency. For households, it means being mindful of daily energy use,” he said. “These may seem like small steps, but taken together, they make a real difference. The government will support you. But our collective response will be far stronger if each of us plays our part too.” MSE …

The Trump Administration Is Doing Something Horrifying to Workers at Nuclear Facilities

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech It isn’t just the guys handling plutonium who need to worry about radiation — every US nuclear worker, from the plumbers patching leaks to the janitors mopping floors, has a reason to be on guard. New reporting by High Country News detailed the startling impact the Trump administration is having on the safety of nuclear energy workers. As part of the administration’s “nuclear renaissance,” the US Department of Energy (DOE) has begun stripping back effective safety regulations that had previously limited workers’ exposure to deadly radiation. “They’re pulling away from what’s kept us safe all these years,” Bradley Clawson, a former nuclear energy worker at Idaho National Laboratory, told HCN. “In the long run it helped us as workers. It was keeping us from getting a higher dose.” Following four executive orders aimed at nuclear deregulation, both the DOE and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) have taken an increasingly lax view of safety at both federal nuclear projects …

Trump extends pause on attacking Iran energy facilities to April 6

President Donald Trump on Thursday said he was extending an ongoing brief pause in attacking Iran’s energy facilities by 10 days, to April 6, at the request of the government of the Islamic Republic. Trump’s move avoids escalating the war with Iran at a time the United States has signaled it wants a negotiated end to the conflict and as the key Strait of Hormuz remains almost completely closed to oil shipments. His announcement came as key U.S. stock market indexes fell and oil prices rose. “As per Iranian Government request, please let this statement serve to represent that I am pausing the period of Energy Plant destruction,” Trump said in a Truth Social post. “Talks are ongoing and, despite erroneous statements to the contrary by the Fake News Media, and others, they are going very well. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” The original five-day pause on U.S. attacks on Iran’s power plants and energy infrastructure was due to end Friday. Trump had announced the first pause on Monday on Truth Social. …

Toxic Sludge Raining Down on Iran After Bombing of Oil Facilities

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech The conditions in Tehran are becoming downright biblical. On top of devastating air strikes, blistering dust storms, and a hellish six-year drought, the country is now being splattered by toxic sludge raining from the skies. Over the weekend, reports of an acidic “black rain” falling over the Iranian capital city of Tehran began flooding the internet. According to Time, the noxious deluge came as a result of Israel bombing nearby oil storage facilities, which unleashed hellish plumes of fire and black smoke into the skies. As the exhaust filled the air for miles, Iranians reported difficulty breathing, headaches, skin damage, as well as eye and throat irritation, Time reported. “Something like a black monster has swallowed the sky over Tehran,” a Tehran resident named Leila told the magazine. “It’s as if all the cars and the street pavement have been coated in black paint.” As the acrid sludge filled the skies, raindrops began falling over the surrounding region, …
