Ever since, ads for gambling apps and online casinos like DraftKings, FanDuel, and BetMGM have become virtually inescapable across social media and TV. Meanwhile, lawmakers are becoming concerned over a steep rise in gambling addiction and calls to gambling helplines. The sheer scale of the trend in the United States is ominous. According to a recent survey of adult Americans by the Siena Research Institute (SRI) and St. Bonaventure University, more than half of men aged 18 to 49 said they had an active account with at least one online sports betting service — and an astonishing 46 percent of them said they’re actively betting on the platforms. After a devastating windstorm destroyed more than 1,200 Pasadena trees in 2011, architect Chris Peck spent the next six years gathering fallen trees, milling the trunks into slabs, and storing and drying them in his garage and his friends’ garages while he figured out how to use the wood. At first, he was happy to keep the fallen trees from being cut into stumps, turned into mulch or sent to landfills, even if that meant just selling the wood as lumber. In this series, we highlight independent makers and artists, from glassblowers to fiber artists, who are creating original products in and around Los Angeles. US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth on Wednesday suggested the media’s reporting of American troops killed after the US went to war with Iran is only to make President Donald Trump “look bad.” In an astonishing attack on journalists during a news briefing at the Pentagon, the former Fox News host and Army veteran was touting the early achievements of Trump’s conflict in the Middle East when he complained about “tragic things” making “front page news.” His comments came after six US military members were killed over the weekend in a drone strike in Kuwait. In pointed remarks aimed at the “fake news,” Hegseth told the press conference: “We’ve taken control of Iran’s airspace and waterways without boots on the ground. We control their fate. The symbol of the helmet was not a collection of abstract designs; it was actually a visual representation of real people. The faces of over 20 members of the Ukrainian Olympic Team killed during Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine were designed as part of the helmet. Skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych had planned on wearing this helmet at the winter games in Milan Cortina but was disqualified before completing any races at these games. After being disqualified, Vladyslav returned home with an unexpected gift — a donation from Rinat Akhmetov, the owner of Donetsk Shakhtar FC and Mariupol Azovstal Steel Factory, in excess of $200,000 intended as a financial contribution to support his athletic career as well as promote his message.
