The city’s mayoral election will take place on June 2, with Bass standing for re-election and facing stiff competition from the likes of Councilwoman Nithya Raman and reality television star Spencer Pratt. Both Raman and Pratt have claimed in recent days that Bass has not done enough to keep film production in Los Angeles. As Variety reports, Bass has now announced a six-month pilot program that will reduce fees for “low-impact” productions. She has also announced a 20 percent discount for productions parking at city lots for a year, which is in line with a deal that was recently agreed to keep the production of the new Baywatch reboot at Venice Beach. Third Order Effects Begin: U.S. Airlines Hike Bag Fees As Jet Fuel Prices Spike

Third Order Effects Begin: U.S. Airlines Hike Bag Fees As Jet Fuel Prices Spike

The New York Harbor jet fuel benchmark has doubled in just five weeks as the aviation fuel crisis spreads from airport to airport worldwide following ongoing disruptions at the Hormuz chokepoint. The third-order effects of that energy shock began to materialize this past week, with major U.S. airlines raising checked-bag fees to offset soaring fuel costs.  United Airlines and JetBlue Airways, two major U.S. carriers, raised checked-baggage fees for domestic travel this week as they begin to figure out ways to address the impact of surging jet fuel prices without causing ticket sticker shock for customers. On Monday, JetBlue raised first-checked-bag prices by $4 to $9, depending on the timing and travel date. Later in the week, United raised its checked-bag fee by $10 for new bookings, pushing some domestic economy bag fees as high as $50. Both airlines said the increased fees are uncommon, with JetBlue citing higher operating costs and United noting it was the first increase in two years.  “United is raising first and second checked bag fees by $10 for customers …

Politics Home Article | Are The Lib Dems Still Haunted By Tuition Fees?

5 min read1 hr The issue of student loans has recently exploded into life, with the government’s decision to freeze the repayment threshold prompting outrage and a debate about major reform. Now that more than 15 years have passed since their highly-damaging tuition fees U-turn, are the Lib Dems ready to talk about student loans again? Ahead of the 2010 general election, the Liberal Democrats, under then-leader Nick Clegg, made a bold and memorable promise: a Lib Dem government would scrap university tuition fees. But just seven months after Clegg’s party entered government as part of a coalition with David Cameron’s Conservatives, a motion to increase tuition fees in England to £9,000 was narrowly passed in the Commons. The move split the parliamentary party, with more than half of Clegg’s MPs voting against the policy or choosing to abstain. Clegg, then the deputy prime minister, was moved to film an apology video in 2012, telling the camera through a downcast expression: “We made a pledge, we didn’t stick to it, and for that I am sorry.” The U-turn was later seen as a …

Wandsworth council has launched legal action against Kent council for allegedly failing to pay fees totalling £4.5 million for pupils it sent to Bradstow School in Kent. Despite being 100 miles from Wandsworth, the London borough inherited the school in 1990 after the Inner London Education authority was abolished. The residential school supported 12 children with autism and complex needs from multiple boroughs, with only one pupil from Wandsworth. Wandsworth decided to close the school in December after racking up a £1 million deficit and alleged £5.3 million in debts owed by various councils. Wandsworth said the majority of this was owed by Kent County Council, which had …

EU insists on tuition fees cut as price of Brexit reset – POLITICO

EU insists on tuition fees cut as price of Brexit reset – POLITICO

Universities say they will face a cash crisis if lucrative foreign fee income is cut and not replaced, with one recently published analysis by the Russell Group suggesting the sector would be left £580 million out of pocket. A U.K. official said the home fees demand wasn’t mentioned in the “common understanding” drawn up as a blueprint for talks last year — and that negotiations are about implementing that document. The agreement does not explicitly mention tuition fees and only says the youth scheme should “facilitate the participation of young people from the European Union and the United Kingdom” in areas including study. But the EU official quoted above said that, while it was debatable whether the change was alluded to in last year’s communique, it was nevertheless the EU’s position. They stressed that other issues under discussion, like the planned agri-food agreement or linking emissions trading systems, were largely U.K. “asks” — and that the EU also had its own interest to pursue. “It’s important to look at the position from the other side,” …

Annabelle Gordon/AFP via Getty Images hide caption toggle caption Annabelle Gordon/AFP via Getty Images Millions of spring break travelers are heading to the airport this month, and Johnny Jones was hoping to be one of them. But the ongoing shutdown at the Department of Homeland Security forced his family to cancel its vacation plans. “I won’t be traveling anywhere, but I’ll be helping out getting people to where they’re going,” said Jones, a TSA security officer at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. He also serves as the Secretary-Treasurer of the American Federation of Government Employees Council 100, which represents about 45,000 TSA officers nationwide. Those TSA officers have been working without pay since funding for the Department of Homeland Security lapsed on February 14th. They’ve already missed part of one paycheck, and many security officers received …
