How to easily encrypt files on an Android phone – and the free app I use to do it

Jack Wallen/ZDNET Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. ZDNET’s key takeaways Encrypting files on Android is easy. You can encrypt and decrypt files with this simple app. OpenKeyChain is free to use and open-source. If you take mobile security seriously (and you should), then you might want to consider file encryption. I’m not talking about saving a file in an encrypted folder to tuck it away from prying eyes.  No. This is all about encrypting files that you can either leave on your device and view when needed or share with others, knowing they can be viewed only by the recipient. Also: The Thunderbird email client finally landed on Android, and it was worth the wait This is made possible by the OpenKeyChain app. This app is all about encryption, and although it makes the process easy, there are some things you’ll need to know before diving in. Let’s do just that. It’s all about keys If you’ve ever used public key encryption on your desktop to securely send a file to someone, you …

Mandelson files to exclude worst of UK’s private comments on Trump – POLITICO

ISC Chair Kevan Jones, a Labour peer, previously told the BBC that the committee would not withhold “embarrassing” revelations that did not jeopardize national security. In the same BBC interview on Feb. 4, Jones did not fully set out what his position would be on any document deemed to prejudice international relations, saying: “International relations aren’t covered by our committee and if the government are going to give us that information, that’s fine.” But when pressed, he responded: “Let’s see what it is. In the past, for example, we’ve had disputes where things you have potentially been embarrassing to government, but we’ve put them in because it doesn’t jeopardize national security.” Two of the four people with knowledge of the process quoted above emphasized that the ISC, a cross-party committee of MPs and peers, has not been leaned on, and is judging whether documents prejudice foreign relations of its own volition. They both stressed that this had been the view of the ISC all along, despite the original revolt by Labour MPs over the scope …

I used a simple Linux command to watch what apps do to my files in real time

I used a simple Linux command to watch what apps do to my files in real time

When I set up Linux, it typically runs as expected. Somewhere in the background, it creates files, updates configurations, and builds caches. However, I rarely peek under the hood to see any of these processes if nothing is broken. For once, I wanted to do it differently. I decided to watch everything as it happened in the background. So, I used the inotifywait command to monitor real-time activity. I was surprised by how powerful this command was. It revealed how even the simplest actions can create several background operations. The Linux feature that tracks everything File activity is easier to monitor than you might think Afam Onyimadu / MUO Inotify is a kernel-level subsystem that was added to Linux in version 2.6.13. This feature captures real-time file system events and reports them as they occur. It’s simply the kernel notifying you of changes. It constantly tracks file creation, modification, deletion, access, and moves to report these events. What I liked about using inotify is how it only adds minimal overhead during typical use. This is …

AI chip startup Cerebras files for IPO

AI chip startup Cerebras files for IPO

Cerebras Systems, a startup building what CEO Andrew Feldman describes as “the fastest AI hardware for training and inference,” has filed to go public. The company previously filed for an initial public offering in 2024, but that was delayed due to a federal review of an investment from Abu Dhabi-based G42 and was ultimately withdrawn. Cerebras raised a $1.1 billion Series G last year, followed by a $1 billion Series H in February at a $23 billion valuation, according to the Wall Street Journal. In recent months, the company announced an agreement with Amazon Web Services to use Cerebras chips in Amazon data centers, as well as a deal with OpenAI reportedly worth more than $10 billion. In a recent interview with the WSJ, Feldman boasted, “Obviously, [Nvidia] didn’t want to lose the fast inference business at OpenAI, and we took that from them.” Cerebras brought in $510 million in revenue in 2025, according to the filing, with a net income of $237.8 million (excluding certain one-time items, it was a non-GAAP net loss of …

Trump spoke at a Turning Point event (Image: Getty) US President Donald Trump said that his administration will soon start releasing government files relating to UFOs. Speaking at a Turning Point event in Arizona on Friday, April 17, Trump asked the crowd whether they remembered that he had directed US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to “begin releasing government files relating to UFOs and unexplained aerial phenomena.” “I’m pleased to report today… that this process is well underway and we found many very interesting documents.” “The first releases will begin very, very soon.” Trump did not provide a specific date on which the release can be expected. Battery recycler Ascend Elements files for bankruptcy

Battery recycler Ascend Elements files for bankruptcy

Ascend Elements said on Friday it has started Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings in the U.S., a heavy blow to investors who had sunk nearly $900 million into the company.  Linh Austin, Ascend’s CEO, announced the decision in a post on LinkedIn late Thursday night. He said the company faced “insurmountable” financial challenges. Ascend’s filing comes amid a softening market for electric vehicles in the U.S. and was likely compounded by the Trump administration’s decision to cancel a $316 million grant intended for a Kentucky facility that was under construction. At the time, $204 million was disbursed, but Ascend had to look for additional capital to make up the shortfall. The market for EVs in the U.S. has hit a rough patch recently. Though sales surged prior to the end of tax credits in September last year, they haven’t quite recovered. Analysts predicted that customers who might have bought this year pulled their purchases forward to take advantage of the credit, but it didn’t help assuage automakers’ fears. Since then, several automakers have dialed back their …

French MEP Rima Hassan files lawsuit over leaks following arrest – POLITICO

The French daily Le Parisien reported — as Hassan was questioned by police — that “a few grams of synthetic drugs” had been found in her handbag. On Wednesday, French outlet Le Canard Enchaîné reported that a justice ministry spokesperson, Sacha Straub-Kahn, had been in contact with members of the press during Hassan’s questioning, “discussing with them the details of her detention.” Straub-Kahn and his office did not immediately respond to POLITICO’s request for comment about the allegations contained in the report. He told Le Canard Enchaîné that he had only discussed journalists’ questions about Hassan’s parliamentary immunity. During questions in parliament Wednesday, Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin announced that Straub-Kahn had filed a complaint for defamation following the publication of the report. Darmanin also said he had requested an internal audit at the justice ministry to verify if any leaks had occurred. Hassan’s lawyer, Vincent Brengarth, wrote in a statement Wednesday: “In light of the very serious revelations … regarding the massive, real-time disclosure in the press of information covered by the confidentiality of legal …
