My son was fined £500 just for dropping a cigarette butt | Consumer affairs

My son was fined £500 after dropping a cigarette butt in Southwark, London. He says the enforcement officer physically prevented him from picking it up, and told him he would escape a fine if he provided ID, and the police would be called if he didn’t. He complied and was promptly issued with a fixed-penalty notice (FPN). However, £500 is more than a typical fine for a dangerous offence such as speeding. I’ve since found fines and enforcement vary dramatically between London boroughs. Barnet charges £100, but drop your cigarette on the Enfield side of Cockfosters Road and your fine will be £500. Same “crime” a few yards apart and a 400% increase. These fines are not proportional and not fair. TH, London I should start by saying that littering is a national scourge and flung fag ends an environmental hazard. However, the government guidance to councils on enforcement, which last month was made legally binding, is unambiguous: the goal is to “educate” and “change behaviour”, and enforcement should be “transparent, accountable, proportionate and consistent”. …

Social Media Companies Fined for Harming User

Social Media Companies Fined for Harming User

Meta and YouTube were just ordered to pay a woman a combined six million dollars for creating addictive products that harmed her psychologically. TikTok and Snapchat were also sued but settled out of court. The 20-year-old woman joined YouTube at age 6 and Instagram at age 9. Over the course of her childhood and adolescence, she explained that her experience on these platforms gave her body dysmorphia and thoughts of suicide, and led her to self-harm. The lawsuit accused Meta and YouTube of intentionally creating addictive platforms that enabled harm. Importantly, this circumvented Section 230, which protects social media companies from liability for content posted on their platforms. This strategy accused the platforms themselves of being harmful, not just what users uploaded or posted. Competing for Our Attention Meta and companies like it are engaged in what one design ethicist calls a “race to the bottom of the brainstem.” That is, each social media company has to compete for our attention. When one company designs a feature like infinite scrolling, all similar companies must either …

Apple Subsidiary Fined Over $500,000 for Breaching Russian Sanctions

Apple’s Irish subsidiary has been fined £390,000 ($516,110) by the UK government for making payments to a sanctioned Russian streaming platform in 2022. The Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation (OFSI) said that Apple Distribution International Ltd. (ADI), the Republic of Ireland-based entity Apple uses to pay App Store developers, made two payments totaling £635,618 to Okko LLC, a Russian video streaming platform, in June and July 2022, at a time when Okko was subject to UK sanctions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The payments were routed through UK banks. ADI voluntarily disclosed the payments to OFSI, and the agency confirmed that no breach had been attributed to Apple Inc. itself, only to the subsidiary. In a statement, Apple said: We follow the laws in the countries where we operate and take sanctions compliance extremely seriously. After identifying two payments to a developer that days earlier had become affiliated with a sanctioned entity, we promptly and proactively reported our finding to the UK government. We are constantly working to enhance our already robust compliance protocols, which …

Meta and YouTube fined $3 million for harming mental health

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg leaving a Los Angeles courthouse during a landmark social media addiction trial Jon Putman/Anadolu via Getty Images Social media giants Meta and YouTube have been found liable by a California jury for negligence that caused harm to a young woman’s mental health. The landmark decision is among the first of many similar cases, and could be the beginning of a trend that may force major changes in how social platforms work. The companies have been ordered to pay $3 million in compensatory damages, which are meant to cover the plaintiff’s financial losses related to the events relevant to the case, as well as pain and suffering. The jury has not yet decided the amount of any punitive damages – money the companies would pay as punishment for their actions. The claim held by the young woman at the centre of the trial, known in court documents as KGM, was that the addictive nature of these social media products led to her anxiety and depression, and the jury agreed. Originally, the lawsuit …

The football world waits for Manchester City verdict after Chelsea fined for ‘deception’ of Abramovich era | UK News

How did Chelsea dominate in the Roman Abramovich era? In part with players, the Premier League has now concluded, signed involving financial deceptions. How were they able to avoid a points deduction and accept a fine – albeit a record £10.75m – that they won’t even need to pay themselves? An explanation is provided in a tranche of league documents that casts a further cloud over the Abramovich ownership that transformed the club’s fortunes. Across eight years, more than £47m in secret payments were made related to transfers, including to unregistered agents, and concealed on behalf of the club by entities associated with Mr Abramovich. There was, the league said, “deception and concealment in relation to financial matters”. Image: Chelsea have been handed a one-year transfer ban, suspended for two years. West Ham’s Jean-Clair Todibo received a straight red card after a VAR review for clutching Pedro’s throat. “It was alleged that Chelsea FC failed to ensure its players didn’t behave in an improper and/or provocative way around the 95th minute,” the FA said in a statement. “It was also alleged that West Ham United FC failed to ensure its players didn’t behave in an improper and/or provocative and/or violent way at this time.” The FA said both clubs …

Penalty notice: Euro Car Parks fined £473,000 for ignoring regulator | Competition and Markets Authority

Euro Car Parks is infamous for dishing out fines but the private parking company has been hit with an almost £475,000 penalty of its own after it failed to hand over information to a regulator. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said it had imposed a £473,000 fine after the company did not respond for three months to seven requests for information, including by registered post, email and hand-delivered letter. It is the first time the CMA has issued a penalty under the new fining powers it was given in 2024. The regulator sends out “information notices” to companies when deciding whether to open an investigation, and businesses have a legal obligation to comply. The CMA said Euro Car Parks, which provides payment systems in car parks, only responded after it raised the spectre of a fine. In its defence, the company claimed it had blocked the watchdog’s emails because it thought they were an attempt to scam the firm. The CMA said it “did not consider this a reasonable excuse” and imposed the penalty …
