Oscars Flashback: Madonna, Dolly Parton, and More Stars of the 2006 Vanity Fair Oscar Party

Oscars Flashback: Madonna, Dolly Parton, and More Stars of the 2006 Vanity Fair Oscar Party

The Vanity Fair Oscar Party is entering a new era. As the 2026 edition festivities move to LACMA—the Los Angeles County Museum of Art—we’re taking a moment to revisit the 2006 Vanity Fair Oscar Party. Twenty years ago, Oscar honorees like Dolly Parton (nominated for her original song in Transamerica), Keira Knightley (best actress nominee for Pride & Prejudice), and Jake Gyllenhaal (best supporting actor nominee for Brokeback Mountain) descended upon Morton’s in West Hollywood, where they toasted the year in film. The Academy spread the wealth at the 2006 Oscars—bestowing three awards apiece on four of the nominated films, including Rob Marshall’s Memoirs of a Geisha, Peter Jackson’s King Kong, and Paul Haggis’s Crash, which pulled an upset to win best picture over Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain, which claimed directing, screenplay, and original score trophies. Let’s travel back to the Jon Stewart-hosted 78th Academy Awards, held on Sunday, March 5, 2006. During the broadcast, George Clooney became a first-time Oscar winner for best supporting actor in Syriana—one of many that evening to win a …

Oscars Flashback: What Heath Ledger, Reese Witherspoon, and Meryl Streep Wore On the Oscars 2006 Red Carpet

Trends may change from year to year, but some things—like black dresses, red lipstick, and Meryl Streep—are never out of place on the red carpet at the Oscars. Just as all of the glam above will almost certainly appear at the Oscars 2026 on Sunday, March 15, they were all present on the Oscars red carpet 20 years ago. The awards ceremony itself was full of surprises, from all four major acting winners—Reese Witherspoon, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rachel Weisz, and George Clooney—being first-time nominees, Crash pulling off a best picture upset over awards season favorite Brokeback Mountain, and more. Not a surprise, however, was the outstanding style attendees displayed on the red carpet two decades ago. Nobody wears a classic black tux like Clooney, as he once again demonstrated in 2006, and Michelle Williams, attending on the arm of Brokeback Mountain costar and then-partner Heath Ledger, another master of menswear, could wear her canary yellow Vera Wang gown with artful tulle ruffles and an elegant train today, and nobody would bat an eye. Jennifer Aniston …

Emmerdale flashback week spoilers as Ray Walters’s killer is exposed

Prepare to go back in time – next week’s Emmerdale is serving us not one, not two, but five flashbacks to explain the events of Ray Walters’s (Joe Absolom) death. Viewers have been left in the dark about his demise ever since a pre-Corriedale peek at his body being dragged through the village. We later saw the corpse wrapped up inside of Jai Sharma’s (Chris Bisson) van, apparently en route to Manchester. However, following the multi-vehicle pile-up on Connelton Lane, it seemed that Jai never reached his destination and the gruesome remains are still held in the back of the vehicle. Next week, he becomes prime suspect. But did he really kill Ray? It’s a proper soapy ‘whodunnit?’, with a number of residents in the frame. The start of next week’s episodes sees a different character in the spotlight, as we peel back the layers to their motive and movements on the night of his death. The suspects meet up, and discuss where they were… Here’s a look at everything happening in Emmerdale between Monday …

‘Shakespeare in Love’ Reinvented Oscar Campaigning in 1998: Flashback

‘Shakespeare in Love’ Reinvented Oscar Campaigning in 1998: Flashback

Nearly three decades before Hamnet‘s depiction of William Shakespeare‘s personal life sparked awards buzz, Oscar voters swooned over a film that showed the Bard as having some swagger. Shakespeare in Love was set up at Universal in the early 1990s; the studio hired Edward Zwick to direct Marc Norman’s script about the playwright’s fictionalized love affair that led him to pen Romeo and Juliet. Zwick enlisted Tom Stoppard for a rewrite, and Universal accepted the scribe’s $1 million salary request once Julia Roberts was attached to star as Viola. The film had not yet found its Shakespeare when production began in 1991; Daniel Day-Lewis was Roberts’ top choice but passed. Roberts ultimately exited the project, leading Universal to shut down production despite sunk costs of $6 million. After Zwick’s success with 1994’s Legends of the Fall, Miramax honcho Harvey Weinstein aimed to revive Shakespeare in Love. Weinstein acquired the rights but then hired John Madden to direct, with Zwick retaining a producer credit. Kate Winslet was among those considered for Viola before Gwyneth Paltrow got …
