Flirting like it’s 1890: I gave this Victorian-inspired ‘acquaintance card’ to a stranger. Here’s how it went | Life and style

Tired of swiping, singles are attending flirting parties and even dating-oriented run clubs in hopes of meeting their future partner in real life. The Guardian’s journalism is independent. The Brooklyn-based stationery brand No Particular Order is offering a more serendipitous option: its new acquaintance cards that encourage more spontaneous connections. Like a business card, you give them out to people you meet – but they foster romantic connections instead. The brand’s founder, content creator Margot Lee, came up with the idea after exiting a long-term relationship and feeling pressured to get on the apps. “I really did not want to do that,” she said. She wanted to connect with people through “happenstance of being at the same place at the same time”. 11 Things A Man Will Do When He Likes You But Is Trying Not To Show It

It can be difficult for a man to be up front about his feelings. Instead of talking to you about them, he may try to disguise them. Little things he does will feel like clues. If you pay close attention, you can pick up on his true feelings towards you. Men are taught at a young age that showing emotion makes them look weak. Instead of being up front about their emotions, they may hide behind a tough exterior. It may be easier for them to pretend they are not interested than to be vulnerable with someone else. When they like you, they may be too afraid to show it directly. Instead, they’ll do these subtle things that, if you pay attention, give away their true intentions. These are 11 things a man will do when he likes you but is trying not to show it 1. How to Win at the Game of Love With Competitive Flirting

How to Win at the Game of Love With Competitive Flirting

Valentine’s Day is a timely reminder of some common misapprehensions about love that psychological research seeks to resolve. For example, despite all the focus in mainstream and social media on desirable looks, the behaviour of flirting might be more vital than realised. After all, it effectively signals that someone is specifically interested in pursuing intimacy with a particular person. Yet flirting doesn’t occur in a vacuum; there are often others in close proximity who are also expressing interest, hence the possible crucial importance of what is claimed to be the first in-depth scientific study of “competitive flirting”. Could success in the world of romance boil down to winning at “competitive flirting”? This research concludes that effective female flirting to attract a male mate differs from the strategy used when deterring a competitor. Attracting a male requires conveying erotic availability, while deterring a female competitor focuses more on suggesting a tie with the target male. The authors of this study, titled “I saw him first: Competitive nonverbal flirting among women, the tactics used and their perceived …

Narcissistic students perceive student-professor flirting as less morally troubling

Narcissistic students perceive student-professor flirting as less morally troubling

New research suggests that a college student’s level of narcissism plays a role in how they perceive and participate in flirtatious interactions with their professors. The findings indicate that students with high levels of grandiose narcissism are more likely to report flirting with faculty and believe faculty are flirting back, whereas those with vulnerable narcissism tend to perceive such behavior as common among their peers but not within their own interactions. The study was published in The Journal of Social Psychology. The dynamics of student-professor relationships have long been a subject of concern within higher education. While most interactions remain professional, sexual or romantic engagements do occur and can lead to serious consequences. These include lawsuits, conflicts of interest, and the erosion of a safe learning environment. Despite the gravity of these issues, there has been very little empirical research into which individual personality traits might predict the initiation of such behaviors. Previous research from the early 1980s suggested that a significant portion of students had flirted with professors, but modern data on the psychological …

Dark personality traits are linked to flirting for personal gain

Dark personality traits are linked to flirting for personal gain

New research provides evidence that people with darker personality traits are more likely to use flirting as a tool for personal gain rather than for romantic connection. The study suggests that while the social environment largely dictates when people flirt for love, individual personality features drive the decision to flirt for material rewards or favors. These findings were published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences. Scientific inquiry into human interaction has identified various reasons why individuals engage in flirting. Some motivations are relational, meaning they are intended to start a new romance or deepen an existing bond. Other motivations are instrumental, where the goal is to secure a specific benefit or reward from another person. Instrumental flirting can be purely utilitarian. An individual might flirt with a bartender to get a free drink or with a coworker to receive assistance on a project. While these distinctions are well-established, less was known about which types of people gravitate toward these specific behaviors. “My coauthors and I were interested in addressing a gap in flirting research. …

Why Are French Movie Stars Flirting With Fascism?

Why Are French Movie Stars Flirting With Fascism?

What’s up with reactionary old French screen legends? Is it something in the wine? Obituaries for sex kitten turned animal rights activist Brigitte Bardot, who died Dec. 28 at age 91, tended to mention her far-right politics in the first paragraph. Indeed, B.B. was an outspoken Islamophobe — her animus evidently stemming from her objection to ritual goat-slaughtering practices during Muslim festivals — who was convicted multiple times by French courts for inciting racial hatred. But she was not as much of an outlier as the postmortems made it seem. While the French film industry, like Hollywood, is overwhelmingly liberal (think of the walkouts at the César Awards when accused statutory rapist Roman Polanski won best director in 2020), some of the biggest Gallic stars of yesteryear have loudly bucked the trend. Take Catherine Deneuve, who though no fan of the far right, nevertheless became the most vocal opponent of #MeToo in France. Or tax exile Gérard Depardieu, who was personally handed a Russian passport by Vladimir Putin and was more recently convicted of multiple instances …
