AI Use Appears to Have a “Boiling Frog” Effect on Human Cognition, New Study Warns

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech In a new study, researchers claim to provide the first causal evidence that leaning on AI to assist with “reasoning-intensive” cognitive labor — mental tasks ranging from writing to studying to coding to simply brainstorming new ideas — can rapidly impair users’ intellectual ability and willingness to persist despite difficulty. “We find that AI assistance improves immediate performance, but it comes at a heavy cognitive cost,” the study declares of its findings. “After just [about] 10 minutes of AI-assisted problem-solving, people who lost access to the AI performed worse and gave up more frequently than those who never used it.” The study, which was conducted by a multidisciplinary cohort of scientists from across the United States and United Kingdom, has yet to be peer-reviewed. But it builds on a growing body of research suggesting that extensive AI use can distort and dampen users’ thinking and independence, and as experts work to understand the impacts of widely-used chatbots on people as …

Putin’s Kremlin had possession of frog poison used to kill Alexei Navalny, foreign secretary claims | News UK Video News

Vladimir Putin’s Kremlin “has had possession” of the deadly frog toxin that was found in the body of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, the UK’s foreign secretary has said. Yvette Cooper also confirmed that the poison – found in the skin of Ecuadorian dart frogs – can also be manufactured in the laboratory and hinted that this could have been the case with the substance alleged to have killed the dissident, who died in a Russian prison two years ago. She was speaking to Trevor Phillips on Sunday, a day after the UK and a group of allies announced that their scientists had discovered that Mr Navalny, 47, had been poisoned with the frog toxin – called epibatidine. Classed as a chemical weapon, it is 200 times stronger than morphine and causes paralysis, respiratory failure and death. Image: Alexei Navalny was buried in the suburbs of Moscow in March 2024. It’s scientific proof that my husband, Aleksei Navalny, was poisoned and killed by Russian government and by Vladimir Putin and Russian prison.” “Only the Russian government had the means, the motive and the opportunity to use that toxin against Aleksei Navalny in prison. Alexei Navalny was killed by Russia with frog toxin, 5 European governments say – POLITICO

But poisoning was “highly likely the cause of his death,” the five countries said in a joint statement on Saturday. Scientists from Porton Down, the U.K.’s top secret laboratory, played a key role in the findings, according to British officials. Navalny, a longtime thorn in the side of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was filmed the day before his death at a court hearing cracking jokes and seemingly in high spirits The U.K. said in a separate statement on Saturday that the circumstances of Navalny’s death were “brutal and barbaric.”  The five countries’ representatives to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons have written to its director general to inform him of the alleged Russian breach of the Chemical Weapons Convention.  The U.K. said Navalny’s death is part of an “alarming pattern” of behavior by Russia, including its use of the Novichok chemical agent in the U.K. in 2018, which led to the death of a British woman, and Russian troops’ “frequent use of chemical weapons on the battlefield in Ukraine.” Russia’s foreign ministry did …

Protesters and mourners rally at the Russian Embassy following the death of Alexei Navalny on February 16, 2024 in Washington, DC. KEVIN DIETSCH / AFP Five European countries, including Britain, France and Germany, accused Russia of “poisoning” opposition leader Alexei Navalny in prison in 2024 using a “rare toxin,” on Saturday, February 14, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference. “The UK, Sweden, France, Germany and The Netherlands are confident that Alexei Navalny was poisoned with a lethal toxin,” the countries said in a joint statement, following “analyses of samples” from his body. The staunch critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin died in an Arctic prison in February 2024, while serving a 19-year prison sentence. The epibatidine toxin found in the skin of dart frogs native to South America was found in samples and “highly likely resulted in his death,” the European states said. “Only the Russian state had the means, motive and opportunity to deploy this lethal toxin to target Navalny during his imprisonment in a Russian penal colony in Siberia, and we …

Alexei Navalny died after being ‘poisoned with dart frog tox | World | News

The Russian state killed opposition leader and Vladimir Putin nemesis Alexei Navalny using a poison developed from a dart frog toxin, the Foreign Office has said. Two years on from the death of Mr Navalny at a Siberian penal colony, Britain and its allies have pinned the blame on the Kremlin following analysis of material samples found on his body. There is no innocent explanation for the toxin epibatidine being found on Mr Navalny’s body, the Foreign Office said. Speaking from the Munich Security Conference, Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said: “Since Yulia Navalnaya announced the loss of her husband here in Munich two years ago, the UK has pursued the truth of Alexei Navalny’s death with fierce determination. Only the Russian government had the means, motive and opportunity to deploy this lethal toxin against Alexei Navalny during his imprisonment in Russia. Today, beside his widow, the UK is shining a light on the Kremlin’s barbaric plot to silence his voice.” Western governments said laboratory testing had “conclusively confirmed” the presence of epibatidine, a toxin found …

Cops Forced to Explain Why AI Generated Police Report Claimed Officer Transformed Into Frog

Cops Forced to Explain Why AI Generated Police Report Claimed Officer Transformed Into Frog

Law enforcement has quickly embraced AI for everything from drafting police reports to facial recognition. The results have been predictably dismal. In one particularly glaring — and unintentionally comedic — instance, the police department in Heber City, Utah, was forced to explain why a police report software declared that an officer had somehow shapeshifted into a frog. As Salt Lake City-based Fox 13 reports, the flawed tool seems to have picked up on some unrelated background chatter to devise its fantastical fairy tale ending. “The body cam software and the AI report writing software picked up on the movie that was playing in the background, which happened to be ‘The Princess and the Frog,’” police sergeant Rick Keel told the broadcaster, referring to Disney’s 2009 musical comedy. “That’s when we learned the importance of correcting these AI-generated reports.” The department had begun testing an AI-powered software called Draft One to automatically generate police reports from body camera footage. The goal was to reduce the amount of paperwork — but considering that immense mistakes are falling …
