Sir Stephen Fry launches £100k damages claim after ‘breaking multiple bones’ in fall at O2 | Ents & Arts News

Sir Stephen Fry is claiming £100,000 in damages after falling two metres off a stage on to a concrete floor at the O2. Sir Stephen, 68, is suing CogX Festival Limited and Blonstein Events after breaking multiple bones in the fall following a talk he gave at the east London venue during the CogX festival in September 2023. High Court documents filed earlier this month said that, after giving a presentation, he fell “whilst exiting the stage backstage area”, falling “approximately two metres from the stage to the concrete floor below”. The two companies were negligent and/or failed in their statutory duty, he claimed, by “failing to ensure that the stage and backstage area were safe, adequately lit and properly protected to prevent a fall from height”. The actor and presenter’s claim is for “personal injuries and consequential losses up to £100,000, which includes an award for pain, suffering and loss of amenity exceeding £1,000, together with interest on damages… and costs”. Stephen Fry opens up on addiction and marriage in The Assembly

Sir Stephen Fry became incredibly candid in tonight’s episode of The Assembly, as the star faced a range of no-holds-barred questions that no chat show or press junket has ever dared to ask. Fry is the first of six famous faces taking part in the series in which a group of inquisitive interviewers who are autistic, neurodivergent and/or learning disabled, put their questions to the celebrities – and no topic is out of bounds. In tonight’s episode (8 April), Fry faced a number of questions about his career and personal life and in one of the early parts of the episode, he was asked by one contributor how much he has spent on cocaine, to which Fry responded: “There was a period where I was an addict to the stuff and in those days, it was was £60 a gram and I probably wasted thousands.” Fry has been very open about his battle with cocaine addiction in the ’80s and ’90s, having documented his struggles in a 2014 memoir More Fool Me. He continued: “I …

Scientists Have Made a French Fry Breakthrough

Scientists Have Made a French Fry Breakthrough

French fries are delicious, but notoriously unhealthy. A research team at the University of Illinois, however, has developed a deceptively straightforward method to keep the satisfying taste and crunch without requiring as much oil. The cooking method combines traditional frying and microwave heating. Adding that microwave step could reduce the amount of oil used in the process, meaning you would absorb less fat with each bite. All the secrets to being able to cook fries in this way have been laid out in two studies published in Current Research in Food Science and The Journal of Food Science. French Fries and Health Although popular, fried foods contain high levels of fat, which is linked to several health problems, including obesity and hypertension. “Consumers want healthy foods, but at the time of purchase, cravings often prevail,” says Pawan Singh Takhar, author of one of the two studies. “The high oil content adds flavor, but it also contains a lot of energy and calories.” It’s precisely with the goal of helping consumers make better food choices without …

Stephen Fry on his Standard Theatre Award: ‘Being in a play is extraordinary’

This is the sort of gold you get when you talk to Fry. “As I got older, I discovered more about Oscar and more about myself and just felt this immediate connection to this remarkable man,” he continues. After playing Wilde in the eponymous 1997 film, “I had in my head that it would be wonderful to play Lady Bracknell, although I didn’t like to push myself forward, because, you know, one’s British, after all, and you don’t do that. So when the offer came … well it meant so much but it terrified me. I was absolutely appalled at the possibility of it not working.” As the reviews attested, it worked very well indeed: his Lady Bracknell was magnificent. Source link

Harvard Business Review Study Finds ‘AI Brain Fry’ Is Leaving Workers Mentally Fatigued

Harvard Business Review Study Finds ‘AI Brain Fry’ Is Leaving Workers Mentally Fatigued

Workers who excessively use AI agents and tools at work are at increased risk of mental fatigue, according to a recent Harvard Business Review study. In certain industries, more than 25% of hired professionals report increased mental strain due to their role in AI oversight — though these professionals also generally experienced less burnout than peers who aren’t using AI. This phenomenon — which the researchers refer to as “AI brain fry” — is described as a “‘buzzing’ feeling or a mental fog” that caused study participants to develop headaches and difficulty focusing and making decisions. Individuals pointed to being overwhelmed by large amounts of information and to frequent task switching as the reasons for these feelings. Studied individuals experienced more brain fry when they utilized AI agents to manage a workload beyond their own cognitive capacity. When participants used AI to replace mundane, repetitive tasks, managing the growing number of tools led to increased mental fatigue.  Crucially, the study found that fewer individuals who used these AI agents reported workplace burnout. The researchers predict …

AI Use at Work Is Causing “Brain Fry,” Researchers Find, Especially Among High Performers

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech It’s looking more and more like using AI to churn out work can take a considerable toll on your mental health, despite the tech’s promises of easing workloads. The latest research to illustrate this grim trend: a survey of nearly 1,500 full time US workers, which found that an alarming proportion of employees who constantly use AI at work to push their productivity past their normal capacity are becoming fatigued, as the researchers from from Boston Consulting Group and University of California, Riverside described in a new report in Harvard Business Review. The researchers even gave the phenomenon an evocative name: “AI brain fry.” “One of the reasons we did this work is because we saw this happening to people who were perceived as really high performers,” Julie Bedard, a partner at BCG and an author of the report, told Axios. In the study, 14 percent of workers said they had experienced “mental fatigue that results from excessive …

Hannah Fry: ‘AI can do some superhuman things – but so can forklifts’

BBC/Curious Films/Rory Langdon The chances are that you think about artificial intelligence far more today than you did five years ago. Since ChatGPT was launched in November 2022, we have become accustomed to interacting with AIs in most spheres of life, from chatbots and smart home tech to banking and healthcare. But such rapid change brings unexpected problems – as mathematician and broadcaster Hannah Fry shows in AI Confidential With Hannah Fry, a new three-part BBC documentary in which she talks to people whose lives have been transformed by the technology. She spoke to New Scientist about how we should view AI, its role in modern mathematics – and why it will upend the global economy. Bethan Ackerley: In the show, you explore what AI is doing to our relationships and sense of reality. Some of this stems from “AI sycophancy” – the idea that these tools give us what we want to hear, not what we need to hear. How does this happen? Hannah Fry: Earlier models were extremely sycophantic. Everything you would write, …

I Tested 6 Major Frozen Fry Brands and the Best One Is a Total Steal at Just $3

High-quality frozen fries don’t have to be expensive. In fact, when I tested six major brands, the most affordable option outperformed the more expensive names. Yes, you can have delicious, crispy fries at home for just $3. And guess what: The air fryer is the most effective tool for preparing them. It delivers a more consistent texture than a traditional oven and is the most efficient way to serve a group. Plus, it’s super easy and fast to get your french fry snack out on the table.  While the mighty air fryer has emerged as the best way to crisp up a bag of frozen varieties for a mealtime side or party platter, far too many succumb to common fry blunders, such as unbalanced potato-to-skin ratios, a lack of seasoning or a hint of freezer burn.  I know a quality french fry when I see one. Joey Skladany/CNET As a self-certified fry expert, I rounded up six of the most popular varieties from Amazon Fresh for the ultimate taste test. Flavor will always reign supreme, …
