Carrick deserves full-time job after guiding Man Utd to brink of Champions League

Yet, remarkably, the goal was the signal for Brentford to take hold of the game. It is no exaggeration to say they should have scored three times after going behind and Andrews, the impressive Brentford head coach, was crestfallen their endeavour was not rewarded. A better connection from Igor Thiago at the back post, when Keane Lewis-Potter zipped a ball across the six-yard box, would have resulted in a Brentford equaliser in the 23rd minute and then, in the next attack, Michael Kayode was denied by Senne Lammens’s outstretched arm. The worst was still to come. Thiago, one of the players of the season, found himself clean through on Lammens after a ball from Ouattara but, rather than shooting, he hesitated, took a touch then slipped over. It prompted one of those growls to tumble out of the Stretford End, a wake-up call that ideas needed to be bucked up. When Ayden Heaven slid in to dispossess Thiago a couple of moments later, the decibels were cranked up further. This could not continue. And it …

Polygamous working: why are people secretly doing two or three full-time jobs at once? | Work & careers

Polygamous working: why are people secretly doing two or three full-time jobs at once? | Work & careers

Name: Polygamous working. Age: It’s really a post-pandemic phenomenon. Appearance: A Zoom meeting window, with video disabled. I’ve heard of polygamy, but I didn’t know you could make money from it. This has nothing to do with polygamy; it’s a term for having more than one job. You mean like moonlighting? Moonlighting refers to someone taking on a secondary job to make ends meet, usually at night. Like a side hustle, then? A side hustle generally involves freelance work undertaken in your own time, as an additional income stream. What if you don’t make any money doing it? Then it’s a hobby. So what’s the polygamy thing? Polygamous working is holding two or more full-time jobs simultaneously, without an employer knowing. Presumably they figure it out when they notice you’re only there half the time. In the old days maybe, but with the rise of hybrid and remote working, polygamous employment can easily go undetected. If no one can tell, then what’s wrong with it? There’s no law against having two jobs, but in some …

United blow title race open as Carrick puts himself in frame for full-time job

United blow title race open as Carrick puts himself in frame for full-time job

Give the job to Michael Carrick? Manchester United have been here before, of course, surfing a wave of good results and good vibes to appoint another former player, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, as their manager. It was a decision they came to regret with heart ruling head and having been swept up in popular opinion, with Gary Neville even dizzily joking there should be a statue for his former team-mate following the Champions League win away to Paris St-Germain in 2019 that helped push through the appointment. But, already, this feels like it has the potential to be more substantial. Possibly much more and while the sense is that Carrick has not been in the running, that may soon have to be revised. And why not? Beating Arsenal – and blowing the Premier League title race wide open again – and Manchester City in his first two games in charge, is a hugely impressive start. Carrick has had an immediate and powerful impact and that should not be underestimated at a club where it can feel …

Woman Avoids Paying Rent By Being A Full-Time House Sitter

Woman Avoids Paying Rent By Being A Full-Time House Sitter

A millennial woman based in NYC revealed that she avoids paying rent by working as a full-time house sitter. Considering rent in NYC is exceptionally high, even for locals who grew up in the five boroughs, her unconventional approach to housing costs is quite ingenious.  Alanna Parrish admitted that working as a house sitter for her clients around the city allows her to completely avoid having to purchase her own place and saves her thousands of dollars each month. A woman avoids paying rent by being a full-time house sitter. “I’m a full-time house sitter in New York City. I don’t have my own place. I live in other people’s homes full-time, and I keep getting asked the same question, which is where do I go if I don’t have a house sit?” Parrish began in her video.  She explained that she spends a lot of time planning her house sits, and she’s usually able to line them up so they overlap, and she’s never without somewhere to stay. Usually, one house sit will end, …

Three ways to tackle injustice without being a full-time activist

Three ways to tackle injustice without being a full-time activist

Many people want to try to address injustice, but don’t know where to start. Some forms of injustice can be addressed by donating money to charities or aid organisations. However, as the American political theorist Iris Marion Young argued, many of the most serious injustices in the world are structural and require political solutions. Structural injustices are not the result of people deliberately acting wrongly, but instead come about when large numbers of people act in tiny, normal and morally acceptable ways. Without necessarily meaning to, they help perpetuate injustices such as sweatshop labour, as well as factors that lead to poverty and climate change. We might say that these injustices are baked into society. Individual efforts – for example by buying less, donating to charity or buying ethical alternatives – can’t solve these problems entirely. The structures will remain unchanged without political action. Becoming an activist is a way of taking up what philosophers call our “political responsibility” for structural injustice. But despite all the injustice in the world, and the pressure from social …
