Report Shows AI is Used Widely in Art Galleries

Report Shows AI is Used Widely in Art Galleries

A new report suggests artificial intelligence is already widely used in commercial galleries, but largely without oversight. According to the AI in Galleries report by the art industry network First Thursday, 84 percent of galleries surveyed say they are using AI tools in their daily work. Yet only 8 percent have a formal policy governing how those tools should be used. The findings are based on interviews with 103 gallery professionals around the world, including owners, directors, and staff working primarily in the UK, Europe, and the US. The report paints a picture of an industry quietly adopting new technology while failing to implement thorough governance and strategy. Related Articles In most cases, AI is being introduced informally by staff rather than through top brass decisions. Around 82 percent of respondents said they access AI through personal accounts rather than systems managed by their gallery. Just 18 percent reported being given dedicated workplace accounts. This gap raises questions about how sensitive data is handled. Without clear guidelines, gallery staff may be entering confidential information, the …

It’s the longest river in the world, full of unique creatures, weaving and winding 3,700 miles across lush rainforests and three countries. The vital Amazon River is a lifeline for flora and fauna alike. The mighty river is celebrated in a new book, AMAZON: A River’s Journey from the Andes to the Atlantic. Readers can follow National Geographic Explorer and photographer Thomas Peschak’s expedition across the Amazon from the Andes mountains in Peru into the Atlantic Ocean in Brazil. The journey loosely follows the Amazon’s flow and features Peschak’s photographs of the region’s biodiversity, novel wildlife behavior, and unique ecologies of rarely seen species. Take a look at some of the breathtaking images in the gallery below. (Click to expand images to full screen.) A brown-throated sloth (Bradypus variegatus) emerges from the water after swimming through a flooded forest. Sloths might be slow climbers, but they are surprisingly strong and fast swimmers. The V&A’s Gilbert Galleries review – a fabulous treasure trove that must be seen to be believed | Art

The V&A’s Gilbert Galleries review – a fabulous treasure trove that must be seen to be believed | Art

We periodically hear when a masterpiece is “saved for the nation”, usually when a museum is obliged to raise eye-watering sums to prevent the export or sale of an artwork deemed of national significance. Museums also occasionally purchase at auction for the same purpose. They are, however, swimming in a pool among the superwealthy, with many news-making record sales subsequently disappearing into someone’s private yacht or bathroom. It is this marketplace that makes it a momentous occasion when an entire private collection is bequeathed to the nation, usually upon the benefactors’ death. From the Wallace Collection in the 19th century to the 2025 acquisition of the Schroder treasure by the Holburne museum in Bath, museums are willing custodians of collections of such quality as can only be acquired through capital vastly exceeding their own. How they choose to present that gift is a curatorial issue in itself. ‘Love of beautiful things’ … Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert. At Frieze LA’s Satellite Fairs, Galleries Wait For Crowds to Roll In

At Frieze LA’s Satellite Fairs, Galleries Wait For Crowds to Roll In

On Wednesday morning at 11 a.m., the VIP line for Felix Art Fair extended from the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel’s Blossom Ballroom out onto Hollywood Boulevard. And, as is always the case with this fair, the line for the elevators to ascend to the 12th floor was equally lengthy. For this reason—unlike the other fairs taking place during LA Art Week—the opening half hour was relatively quiet for exhibitors, as collectors, advisers, curators, and critics trudged through lines to reach the exhibition floor. When I finally exited the elevator bank, I found myself in front of Amsterdam-based gallery Althuis Hofland Fine Arts, participating in Felix for the second time. “Last year went really well,” founder Jeanine Hofland told ARTnews, noting that they had shown a solo presentation of Masao Nakahara, who this year shares the room with Karel Dicker. Dicker’s intimate genre paintings in artist-made wood frames are especially charming. The gallery had pre-sold several works ahead of the fair, denoted by the rare price sheet marked with red-dot stickers, and so far there had been …

Labubus, YouTube, and More On View in the V&A’s Reopened Galleries

Labubus, YouTube, and More On View in the V&A’s Reopened Galleries

On Wednesday, the V&A in London reopened several galleries dedicated to design from the past 126 years. The newly installed Design 1900-Now spaces, which had been closed since November, showcase 250 objects from the 20th and 21st centuries, from a first edition of Kim Kardashian’s coffee table book Selfish, published in 2015, to a bottle of Finlandia vodka from 1969-70, to a “Crate” chair designed by Gerrit Rietveld in 1934. The collection is a reminder of how design infiltrates everyday life, whether through technology, trendy toys, or modes of communication. The galleries are not organized chronologically, but around six themes: automation and labor, housing and living, crisis and conflict, consumption and identity, sustainability and subversion, and data and communication. Below are several highlights from the 1900-Now galleries, including a few new acquisitions. Those include a package of star-shaped pimple patches; a circular blue badge that says “Please offer me a seat,” designed for public transportation users who have trouble standing, a green polyester travel prayer mat with an embedded compass, so a user can always …

9 rare animals caught on camera in the ‘Amazon of Asia’

Get the Popular Science daily newsletter💡 Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. The results of a new camera-trap survey in Southeast Asia is revealing a bevy of hidden biodiversity tucked within the Annamites mountain range. This largely unexplored wildlife hotspot has a forest stretching 683 miles (1,100 kilometers) across the countries of Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia.  The survey took place over the course of 2025 and uncovered numerous enchanting and rare species. The embedded cameras picked up many of the endangered animals’ unique behaviors and preferred habitats, while also providing conservationists with crucial data on the key threats to the region’s many species. It was conducted by nature conservation charity Fauna & Flora, and its local and global partners.  “The Annamites mountain range—sometimes called the ‘Amazon of Asia’—is alive with a host of incredible creatures, each playing a critical role in maintaining the forest ecosystems that are vital to the health of our planet,” Gareth Goldthorpe, a Senior Technical Adviser, Asia-Pacific, Fauna & Flora said in a statement. “This camera-trap data …

What to See at Milan’s Museums, Galleries During the Winter Olympics

What to See at Milan’s Museums, Galleries During the Winter Olympics

The 2026 Winter Olympics are upon us, with the opening ceremony—featuring a performance by Mariah Carey!— taking place at Milan’s San Siro Stadium at 8 PM local time on Friday, February 6. Events will take place throughout northern Italy, with indoor ice events in Milan and outdoor events in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Livigno, Bormio, Predazzo, and Tesero. While the Dolomites and Italian Alps are lovely this time of year, winter sports fans who hope to slip in some art viewing while in Italy should probably stick to things like figure skating, speed skating, or hockey. Milan has a lot more to offer in terms of museums and galleries, though only the Museo del Novecento seems to have made an effort to cater to sports fans. Related Articles Below are some of Milan’s top museums and galleries, including notes about what will be on view during the three-week run of the 2026 Winter Olympics. What Are Galleries Bringing to Art Basel Qatar?

What Are Galleries Bringing to Art Basel Qatar?

When Art Basel opens its first edition in Doha on Tuesday, the difference—from other editions—will be immediately apparent. This is the smallest Basel fair by far: just 85 galleries, all of them mounting solo presentations, in a layout that feels closer to a curated exhibition than a commercial free-for-all. For comparison there were 206 galleries in Paris and 283 in Miami. While sources have told me that following editions in Qatar will grow to Paris- and Miami-size, the smaller scale for the first edition is deliberate. Unlike the sister fairs, where aisles can blur into one another and it’s not unusual to see the artist du jour in multiple booths, Art Basel Qatar has imposed tight limits. Related Articles Most galleries are using only two walls and brought only a handful of works. There are no built-in power sources, which effectively rules out video and large installations, and no chairs or tables in the booths. (The galleries, however, were each offered a custom designed bench.)  Dealers can bring works in reserve, but I’ve been told there are …
