Gateway to the South Downs: take the train to a picture-perfect village with a cracking pub | Sussex holidays

Gateway to the South Downs: take the train to a picture-perfect village with a cracking pub | Sussex holidays

Wisteria and clematis hang from weathered cottage walls. Tulips and pink apple blossom spill out of several gardens. Thatched animals decorate the rooftops. There’s a Norman church, a medieval castle and an 80-hectare (200-acre) nature reserve. Amberley is the kind of place people assume you can only reach by car, but the village has its own railway station with regular direct trains, along the scenic Arun Valley line, from Bognor, Horsham and London Victoria. This spring, the Black Horse pub reopened in Amberley. The new owners are the gourmet Gladwin brothers, Oliver and Richard, returning to their Sussex roots near Nutbourne Vineyards. Having founded five Local & Wild restaurants in London, the Black Horse is their first country pub and first place with rooms. I’ve walked through Amberley numerous times, but never stopped to explore. It’s the midpoint of the South Downs Way, a 100-mile route from Winchester to Eastbourne, with views for much of its length in both directions: north across the Weald and south towards the sea. Gateway Capital announces first close of M Fund II

Gateway Capital announces first close of $25M Fund II

Gateway Capital Partners, the venture firm founded by Dana Guthrie, announced the first close for its $25 million target Fund II earlier this week, the Milwaukee-based firm told TechCrunch. Gateway Capital declined to share the exact amount of the first close. The first close means Fund II can begin its investment operations. Guthrie said the firm began raising its Fund II in the middle of last year. Fund II’s average check size will be between $500,000 and $600,000. It will be industry-agnostic, she said, though it will have “a bias toward Midwest industries that are ripe for disruption,” such as supply chain and logistics, and manufacturing AI. Guthrie said she hopes to back at least 20 companies from this fund. Gateway Capital, launched in 2020, last raised a $13 million Fund I in 2020. Source link

Popular AI gateway startup LiteLLM ditches controversial startup Delve

Popular AI gateway startup LiteLLM ditches controversial startup Delve

LiteLLM, makers of a popular AI gateway used by millions of developers, has publicly announced that it is ditching compliance startup Delve and will redo its security certifications with another company and auditor. The announcement comes after LiteLLM’s open source version fell victim to some horrific credential-stealing malware last week. Prior to the incident, LiteLLM had obtained two security compliance certifications by hiring AI compliance startup Delve. Such certifications are intended to verify that a company has procedures in place to minimize potential incidents. Delve has been accused of misleading its customers about their true compliance by allegedly generating fake data and using auditors that rubber-stamped their reports. Delve’s founder has denied those allegations and offered free re-tests and audits to all of its customers. That denial encouraged the anonymous Delve whistleblower to double down, including releasing alleged receipts over the weekend. On Monday, LiteLLM CTO Ishaan Jaffer posted on X that his company will be using Delve competitor Vanta to re-certify and will find its own, independent third-party auditor to verify its compliance controls. After such …

Earth’s ‘Gateway to Hell’ keeps getting bigger

Earth’s ‘Gateway to Hell’ keeps getting bigger

In a remote area of the Siberian tundra, there’s a place that locals call “The Gateway to Hell.” In the summer, its peaceful waterfall sounds are interrupted by the booms and crashes of falling earth. The indigenous Yakut people are rightfully wary of the massive, slowly collapsing crater. While it‘s not actually a portal to another dimension, the Batagay Crater is an unsettling mark of our changing world. And, in a sense, the formation is an opening to a hidden subsoil dimension–even if it’s not a supernatural one. For starters, the Batagay Crater isn’t technically a crater. It’s actually a retrogressive thaw slump (or RTS), which is a widening chasm caused by permafrost thaw and sinking land–basically, a slow motion landslide. Batagay is the largest RTS in the world, and it’s growing. But why? Find out by watching our latest video. If you’d like to see more Popular Science videos, subscribe on YouTube. We’ll be bringing you explainers and explorations of our weird world. Barry Williams | New York Daily News | Getty Images The Trump administration on Wednesday released the rest of the funds it had been withholding for the construction of a major rail tunnel between Manhattan and New Jersey, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said Wednesday. The federal government freed up the remaining $98 million due for the Gateway project that is increasing passenger rail capacity into Manhattan, as well as an additional $30 million in reimbursements for work that had been completed in January, Hochul said in a statement. The frozen funds were released in tranches over nearly two weeks after a federal judge blocked the Trump administration from withholding the money for the project that began construction in 2023. In compliance with that Feb. 6 order, the administration released $30 million on Feb. 13, followed by an additional $77 million earlier this week. The funding suspension, initiated on the eve of the Oct. 1 government …

Infinite scrolling: The ‘gateway to addiction’ at the heart of the war on social media | UK News

Infinite scrolling: The ‘gateway to addiction’ at the heart of the war on social media | UK News

In a pocket of spare time, you may reach for your phone to scroll social media – but how often do you end up spending more time here than you planned? You might beat yourself up for losing stretches of your day to scrolling, but your attention is being held by design, experts suggest – more so now than ever. “It is not the social media of 2012. This is much more sophisticated,” Dr Kaitlyn Regehr, associate professor of digital humanities at UCL, tells Sky News. And with short-form content now more prominent, the “infinite scroll” format is under the spotlight as one of social media’s most powerful weapons. The government is currently carrying out a consultation on implementing an Australian-style social media ban for under-16s. It is looking at options including restricting infinite scrolling, which it says “drives addictive or compulsive use”. Sir Keir Starmer said children are being pulled into “a world of endless scrolling, anxiety and comparison”. So how does the infinite scrolling feature play into this? Dr Regehr tells Sky News …

NFT Platform Nifty Gateway Shutters Amid Market Collapse

NFT Platform Nifty Gateway Shutters Amid Market Collapse

Nifty Gateway, one of the earliest and most high-profile online marketplaces for non-fungible tokens (NFTs), announced it will close on February 23, citing sharply declining activity. The platform, which has already entered “withdrawal-only mode,” is advising users to move their assets before the deadline, after which they will no longer be able to buy, sell, or bid on NFTs, though withdrawals will still be possible. Founded in 2018 by twins Duncan and Griffin Cock Foster, Nifty Gateway was designed to make NFT transactions accessible via cryptocurrency or fiat. In 2019, it became the first acquisition of Gemini, the crypto exchange founded by Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss. At its height in 2021, the platform reported $300 million in gross merchandise value, boosted by a Sotheby’s partnership for a $17 million NFT drop by the artist Pak. Related Articles “The Nifty team pioneered dozens of innovative drops and creative experiences,” Gemini said in its announcement, expressing gratitude to artists and collectors for joining the platform. The NFT boom, though, has since collapsed. Trading volumes have tanked from …

Visalia, California’s ‘gateway to the Sequoias,’ offers unexpected charms

Visalia, California’s ‘gateway to the Sequoias,’ offers unexpected charms

Even though Visalia holds the title of being the oldest city in the San Joaquin Valley, it’s more likely a place you’ve passed through on your way to visit General Sherman or the infamous carved Tunnel Log. Many Angelenos don’t even know how to properly pronounce its name. But Visalia (say it: vai-SAY-lee-uh) — a place long known as “the gateway to the Sequoias” for its proximity to Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks — is becoming a destination in its own right. The 151-year-old Central Valley city has been working hard to shed its bucolic stereotypes and reinvent itself as a cosmopolitan oasis with hip boutiques, craft breweries and a revamped downtown. Changes started happening about five years ago when the Darling Hotel opened in the bones of the former 1930s Tulare County Courthouse annex. The Art Deco boutique hotel offers chic accommodations, catering to design-savvy travelers. Nowadays, downtown’s East Main Street, which plays host to tchotchke-laden antique stores and patio dining, is a vibrant, walkable hub. At First Friday Downtown Art Walks, people …
