St George’s Day 2026: When is St George’s Day 2026, flag laws and is it a bank holiday | UK | News

St George’s Day will be celebrated again this week (Image: Getty) St George’s Day is back this Thursday for households in England to come together and celebrate. The annual day sees events held across England every year as English men and women honour the patron saint of England on the anniversary of his death in 303 AD. While it probably doesn’t get as much attention as St Patrick’s Day over in Ireland, St David’s Day in Wales or St Andrew’s Day in Scotland, each year services are held in churches for St George’s Day, and events are usually held in Trafalgar Square. These are the St George’s day events, rules and key dates as well as the call for a bank holiday. Driscoll on Army Gen. George’s ouster: I ‘personally regret’ he’s no longer in active service

Army Secretary Dan Driscoll on Thursday addressed the firing of the service’s former chief of staff, Gen. Landlord set to lose appeal to keep St George’s cross on pub – after just 1 complaint | UK | News

Landlord set to lose appeal to keep St George’s cross on pub – after just 1 complaint | UK | News

A landlord is set to lose his appeal to keep the giant St George’s Cross he painted on his pub following complaints that it resembles “the headquarters of the National Front”. Jerry Kunkler, owner of the Moonrakers Inn in Pewsey, Wiltshire, first painted his white pub with the red cross in 2016. He repainted it in 2022 for the World Cup in Qatar. Then, in 2025, someone staying at a local Airbnb reported it to the council. The 19th-century pub is Grade II listed, and so Kunkler had to apply for planning permission to keep the flag up. The planning application received several complaints, with people saying it was “racist” and “anti-migrant”. He was notified by Wiltshire Council that they were investigating a potential breach of planning legislation, and now planners have recommended that the council reject the application and that the paint be removed. Council planning officer Pippa Card said the St George’s Cross had a “presumed association with other organisations” and that it “lowered the tone of the area”. But she said she …

The First Robot Movie: Watch a Newly Discovered Georges Méliès Film from 1897

The First Robot Movie: Watch a Newly Discovered Georges Méliès Film from 1897

Metropolis, Forbidden Planet, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Wars, Blade Runner, The Terminator, Short Circuit, RoboCop, Ghost in the Shell, The Iron Giant, WALL‑E, Ex Machina: there is a parallel history of cinema to be told entirely through its robots. That such a history must begin with the work of Georges Méliès may not come as a surprise, given that he invented so many of the techniques of science-fiction filmmaking. But until recently, we didn’t actually know that the cinema pioneer who “invented everything” ever put a robot onscreen. The evidence turned up among a collection of “old and battered” reels of film that were “from before World War I and had been shuttled around from basements to barns to garages and had just been dropped off at the Library.” So writes the Library of Congress’ Neely Tucker, who goes on to describe the action of one of the films involving “a magician and a robot battling it out in slapstick fashion. It took a bit, but then the gasp of realization: They were looking at ‘Gugusse and the Automaton,’ …

Meet the real-life partners of the Call the Midwife cast: from Helen George’s new beau to Jenny Agutter’s late husband

Call the Midwife fans, rejoice: we’re officially getting a prequel! The beloved period drama series, which follows a group of midwives living in the East End of London in the late ’50s and beyond, is not only coming back for a 16th season, but is getting an exciting new spin-off this year.  While viewers eagerly await the prequel set in the Second World War, the show’s creator, Heidi Thomas, has already teased what we can expect. Heidi shared at the Radio Times Covers Party 2026 that Sister Julienne, Sister Evangelina and Sister Monica Joan are all set to return. On top of the prequel news, a spin-off movie is in the works too, so fans can be sure to expect much more of their favourite midwives on-screen.  The BBC drama’s stars have been on TV for more than a decade since the show’s debut in 2012. While fans are familiar with their on-screen romances, off-screen, many of the cast have found love away from the camera. Read on to find out who the cast are …
