‘Their Town’ review: Katie Aselton and Mark Duplass create a glorious hangout movie for theater kids

Theater kids can get a bad wrap for being too much and generally annoying. But speaking as a theater kid, a lot of that energy comes from an urgent desire to be known — not just seen but truly known.  Mark Duplass and Katie Aselton understand that yearning and channel that earnestness and openness into the teen drama Their Town. Pulling inspiration from Richard Linklater’s Before trilogy, Duplass scripts a deceptively simple story about two high schoolers who connect one long night after play rehearsal. Aselton directs, weaving the story across a small Maine town, turning everyday locations into sacred spaces of sharing. And in the lead roles, this husband-and-wife team chose one established young actor, IT‘s Chosen Jacobs, and one newcomer, their daughter, Ora Duplass. Together, they create a hangout movie that is patient, poignant, and powerful.  Their Town captures the frail and frightening freedom of youth.  Beginning at play rehearsal after school, Their Town swiftly establishes Abby (Duplass) and Matt (Jacobs) through their positions on stage. She is the lead, opposite her moody …

‘Taking my clothes off is my whole life!’ Bryan Cranston on the glorious gross-out return of Malcolm in the Middle | Television

‘Taking my clothes off is my whole life!’ Bryan Cranston on the glorious gross-out return of Malcolm in the Middle | Television

The intro to the new Malcolm in the Middle is quite the thing. Kids punch police officers. Santa Claus gets kicked in the face. A barrel full of faeces detonates inside a family car. This recap of previous episodes is so full of gross-out comedy and family fights that a grandma grabs her teenage grandson and crushes his testicles until he squeals. “And,” intones a voiceover at its end, “someone actually asked for more of this.” Did they? It’s been 20 years since the Emmy-winning sitcom about an outrageous working-class US family with the titular child genius went off air. It’s a show whose fans remember it fondly for never dipping in quality throughout its seven seasons. But were they really clamouring for more? “It was in all the magazines,” says Frankie Muniz, AKA lead character Malcolm. In 2015, he casually tweeted that it would be “so cool” to catch up with the characters and “I couldn’t believe the response. I was shocked.” Although, really, he shouldn’t have been. After all, he’s spent decades getting …

A Glorious Splash of Time – OpentheWord.org

Crucifixion of Christ by Andrea Mantegna, 1457, Wikipedia, Public Domain By Heidi McLaughlin An unrelenting knot in my stomach signals the beginning of my Easter week. My emotions become tender and anxious because Good Friday is approaching – again. This tension started ten years ago on a Good Friday, when I heard the whispered, gut wrenching words, “Were you there when they nailed Him to the tree?” In that divine, hushed moment I became that mother gazing upon her own son hanging on a cross. I tried to envision my son in that scene—Donovan, the apple of my eye, with his wistful lopsided grin and dimples. The one who makes me double over in laughter, creates gourmet recipes, shops with me, and makes my buttons burst with pride. My whole life has been devoted to nurturing, loving and protecting him. So I am overcome with emotion when I place myself in that moment in time, where Mary stands, looking up at her son’s bloody, nail pierced hands as He hung upon the cross. To a …

Lord of the Flies review | A glorious reminder of the novel’s power

Lord of the Flies review | A glorious reminder of the novel’s power

A star rating of 4 out of 5. If I say Lord of the Flies, most of you will think of school. I certainly do. The book is a staple on the English Literature GCSE syllabus, meaning many find their first experience of the story there. Personally, I was in a school production of it. I played one of the twins, Eric, despite not having a twin. I was told that I had a “generic face”, meaning there would be plenty of other potential cast members who could be matched up with me. Putting that aside – given that it’s probably something I should deal with in my own time – there’s a reason why the story is so widely read and performed on stage in schools, but it also means that many may bristle at the idea of watching it on TV on a Sunday night. Dissecting every sentence of a book isn’t always the best way to find enjoyment, even if it makes sense from an academic standpoint. My hope is that viewers …

14 glorious things to do in Vancouver

14 glorious things to do in Vancouver

It was a sunny day in Vancouver, Canada. From the beach at English Bay (like Santa Monica, but cleaner), you could see snow atop the mountains and hear kids laughing. After a bike ride in Stanley Park (like Griffith Park, but with beaches), I had just bought a hot dog from a cart and taken two bites when a voice rang out. “No,” it shouted, startled and helpless. That’s when everyone by the beach turned my way, with faces showing great concern. Because it was my voice. A sea gull had swooped, grabbed my hot dog and carried it away. The shout had left my body before I could think. Immediately, the Vancouverites understood this. Then, with the same equanimity that allows so many Canadians to commit violence in ice rinks while displaying civility at all other times, they turned away and resumed their day. Let this be a lesson, all you who daydream of escaping to this place that people call the California of Canada. Amid the seaside parks, forest paths, stylish skyscrapers, good …

Food, history and glorious trees: A weekend in Sacramento

Food, history and glorious trees: A weekend in Sacramento

Be honest: If you were asked to list cities you’d want to visit in our great state, you’d probably go through at least 10 before you got to Sacramento, our capital. San Diego would be on it since it has beaches. Napa would be near the top because of the wine. But Sacramento? What does it have? Politicians? Well, believe it or not, even the politicians didn’t choose Sacramento at first. When California became the 31st state on Sept. 9, 1850, its government designated San Jose as the official capital. The state capital moved twice more, to Vallejo and Benicia, before they finally settled on Sacramento in 1854. Construction of the capitol building as we know it today wasn’t completed until 20 years later. Despite visiting many other state capitals, I hadn’t been to Sacramento. It wasn’t on my list. But some inexplicable force recently drew me to the town. OK, maybe it was “Lady Bird.” You, too, might have been clued into Sacramento’s charms by filmmaker Greta Gerwig’s 2017 solo directorial debut film. The …
