Marian Goodman Gallery will pause operations at its Los Angeles outpost after two and a half years at the conclusion of its current solo show for Tacita Dean on April 25. Just months after her death in January at 97, Marian Goodman is returning to the market—this time as a consignor. Christie’s will offer works from the dealer’s personal collection during its May marquee sales in New York, led by a group of paintings by Gerhard Richter, with one carrying an estimate as high as $50 million. The material, which once hung Goodman’s Manhattan home, is expected to total around $65 million.  The centerpiece is a selection of seven Richter paintings from between 1982 and 2009, presented at the start of the 21st Century Evening Sale on May 20. Among them is the 1982 painting Kerze (Candle), one the artist’s best-known and most sought after motifs; it carries a pre-sale estimate of between $35 million to $50 million. Marian Goodman, the art dealer admired for her lifelong loyalty to her artists and her indifference to market trends, died on Thursday in a Los Angeles hospital at 97, ARTnews reported on Sunday. In 1977, at 49, she opened Marian Goodman Gallery in Midtown Manhattan with an exhibition of Marcel Broodthaers, signaling the adventurous sensibility that defined her career. Over five decades, Goodman championed and helped establish many leading figures, often Europeans under-recognized in the US. Once she committed to an artist, she stayed committed for decades. Her roster included Gerhard Richter, Steve McQueen, Julie Mehretu, and William Kentridge.
