Estonia calls on EU to tax Russian goods to fund Ukraine’s reconstruction – POLITICO

“We need to tariff the goods from Russia to pay off the damages,” he said. “This has been the talk in different kinds of corridors [and] different meetings, that different kinds of tariffs on Russian goods could fund the reconstruction of Ukraine.” Seven countries, including Estonia, called for tariffs on Russian products such as steel and fertilizer last November, but the push has stalled and was not part of a 20th sanctions package agreed by the EU this week. Michal argued that even the €210 billion in Moscow’s frozen assets, held in a Brussels-based financial depository, would not be enough to cover the gigantic bill. The full financial cost of Russia’s four-year-old invasion of Ukraine, which has killed or wounded hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians, displaced millions more and razed cities to the ground, is difficult to calculate. But a study commissioned by the Ukrainian government, the United Nations, European Commission, and World Bank, published in February last year, found it would cost €500 billion over a decade to rebuild Ukraine. The study also found …

The FBI Didn’t Answer Texts From Minnesota Investigators for Days After Renee Good’s Killing

On Wednesday, January 7, federal immigration enforcement and deportation officer Jonathan Ross shot and killed Renee Good at approximately 9:37 am local time. That same day, an official from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) texted a Federal Bureau of Investigation counterpart, repeatedly requesting access to the crime scene evidence. But according to records WIRED obtained through a public records request, the FBI did not respond for at least two days. The texts appear to have been sent shortly before the FBI, according to the BCA, told the agency that the investigation into Good’s death would “be led solely by the FBI” and that the BCA “would no longer have access to the case materials, scene evidence or investigative interviews necessary to complete a thorough and independent investigation.” The texts provide new insight on a breakdown in communication between the two agencies that eventually contributed to the BCA, Hennepin County Attorney, and the state of Minnesota filing a lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice, which includes the FBI. …

U.S., China discuss farm goods, managed trade in Paris talks: Reuters

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent gives a statement during the 56th annual World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting, at the USA House venue, in Davos, Switzerland, January 19, 2026. Denis Balibouse | Reuters Top U.S. and Chinese economic officials held “remarkably stable” talks in Paris on Sunday that touched on potential areas of agreement in agriculture, critical minerals and managed trade for U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping to consider in Beijing, two sources familiar with the talks said. The sources told Reuters that the “candid and constructive” Paris talks led by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng would set in motion possible “deliverables” for Trump’s trip to China to meet with Xi at the end of March. But they added that the leaders would have the final say ‌on the proposals. The Chinese side showed openness to potential additional purchases of U.S. agricultural goods including poultry, beef and non-soybean row crops, one of the sources said, adding that China was still committed to buy 25 million metric …

The 7am wake-up call on Stanley Road in Liverpool came courtesy of the screech of a police angle-grinder and a shower of sparks. As officers cut their way through a heavy metal gate, sleepy faces peered from behind curtains in neighbouring houses. When the gate finally gave way, dozens of officers swarmed through and began to batter their way into a row of heavily-secured flats. (Photo by I-Hwa Cheng / AFP) (Photo by I-HWA CHENG/AFP via Getty Images) I-hwa Cheng | Afp | Getty Images Trump administration officials signed a final reciprocal trade agreement that confirmed a 15% U.S. tariff rate for imports from Taiwan, while committing Taiwan to a schedule for eliminating or lowering tariffs on nearly all U.S. goods. The document released by the U.S. Trade Representative’s office on Thursday also commits Taiwan to significantly boost purchases of U.S. goods from 2025 through 2029, including $44.4 billion of liquefied natural gas and crude oil, $15.2 billion of civil aircraft and engines, $25.2 billion of power grid equipment and generators, marine and steelmaking equipment. The agreement adds technical language and specific details to a trade framework deal first reached in January that cut tariffs on Taiwanese goods, including from its powerhouse semiconductor industries, to 15% from the 20% initially imposed by Trump. That puts Taiwan on an equal footing with its closest Asian export competitors, …

EU targets Russian energy, banks, goods and services in latest sanctions package – POLITICO

EU targets Russian energy, banks, goods and services in latest sanctions package – POLITICO

It also introduces new import bans on metals, chemicals and critical minerals, as well as further export restrictions on items and technologies used for Russia’s battlefield effort, such as materials used to produce explosives. The package lists 20 more Russian regional banks as well as several banks in third countries that are perceived as facilitating trade in sanctioned goods. Von der Leyen said a drop of 24 percent in Russian oil and gas revenues last year, to the lowest since 2020, confirmed that sanctions were working. “We will continue to use them until Russia engages in serious negotiations with Ukraine for a just and lasting peace,” she asserted. EU countries would need to approve the package for the measures to take effect, with the goal getting a deal over the line in time for the four-year mark of Vladimir Putin’s war of aggression against Ukraine on Feb. 24. The proposal comes on the heels of a round of trilateral talks between Ukrainian, American and Russian negotiators this week in Abu Dhabi, where Ukraine and Russia agreed …

Israel charges brother of Shin Bet’s chief for smuggling goods into Gaza

Prosecutors on Thursday filed charges against the brother of the head of Israel’s domestic intelligence agency for offences including “assisting the enemy in wartime”, over the alleged smuggling of cigarettes into besieged Gaza. Israel controls the entry of all goods and people into the Palestinian territory, where humanitarian conditions remain dire despite a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas which came into effect on October 10. Bezalel Zini, the brother of Shin Bet chief David Zini, is charged along with other defendants with “assisting the enemy in wartime, performing transactions in property for terrorist purposes, obtaining something by fraud under aggravated circumstances, and taking bribes”, the justice ministry said. “A central category of prohibited goods smuggled into the Strip was tobacco and cigarettes, which have put a total of hundreds of millions of shekels into Hamas’s coffers since the start of the war,” the ministry added in a statement. Bezalel Zini, a reservist in the Israeli military, is suspected of smuggling approximately 14 cartons of cigarettes into Gaza on three occasions, for which he received 365,000 …

Renee Good’s brothers and a woman shot five times by CBP decry DHS’ tactics

Two brothers of Renee Nicole Good, who was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in her car last month in Minneapolis, gave emotional testimony Tuesday in Washington about the death of their sister and its impact on the family. Good’s death on Jan. 7 resulted in an escalation of anger, opposition and protests against the administration’s immigration enforcement policies and was followed weeks later by the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti by Customs and Border Protection officers on Jan. 24. Their killings have led lawmakers to call for reform and accountability in the Department of Homeland Security, as well as for the resignation of DHS Secretary Kristi Noem. “The deep distress our family feels because of Nee’s loss in such a violent and unnecessary way is complicated by feelings of disbelief, distress and desperation for change,” Luke Ganger testified Tuesday at a public forum held by Democrats to discuss violent tactics and use of force by DHS. Luke Ganger and Brent Ganger, brothers of Renee Good, on Capitol Hill on Tuesday.Roberto Schmidt …

Trump threatens to raise tariffs on South Korean goods to 25%

Trump threatens to raise tariffs on South Korean goods to 25%

US President Donald Trump said on Monday that he would raise tariffs on South Korean goods, including autos, lumber and pharmaceuticals, taking aim at the country for “not living up to” an earlier trade pact struck with Washington. The increase would bring tariff levels from 15 percent to 25 percent. “South Korea’s legislature is not living up to its deal with the United States,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. He added that he was increasing tariff rates “because the Korean legislature hasn’t enacted our historic trade agreement, which is their prerogative”. South Korea’s presidential office said it had not been informed about the tariff hike plans in advance. It said Trade Minister Kim Jung-kwan, currently in Canada, would head to Washington for talks on the issue with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Trump’s apparent about-face comes months after Washington and Seoul struck a trade and security deal, capping a period of tense negotiations. The agreement was finalised after Trump met his South Korean counterpart Lee Jae Myung in October and included investment promises …
