Google Brings Vertical Tabs and Improved Reading Mode to Chrome

Google Brings Vertical Tabs and Improved Reading Mode to Chrome

Google today updated its Chrome browser with support for vertical tabs, which are displayed in a sidebar instead of at the top of the browser. The tab layout can be changed by right clicking on any Chrome window and choosing the “Show Tabs Vertically” option. Sidebar tabs feature full page titles and make it simple to organize tab groups. Google has also added a new full-page interface for reading mode. Right clicking on a webpage and choosing the “Open in reading mode” option will remove distractions and initiate a full-page viewing experience rather than the current side panel default. Google says the two new features are rolling out on the desktop version of Chrome starting today, so they should be available for all users soon. Google brings Gemini in Chrome to India

Google announced Wednesday that it is bringing Gemini integration for Chrome to new regions, including India, Canada, and New Zealand. The rollout will let users use Gemini in Chrome through a sidebar on desktop, enabling them to ask Google’s AI chatbot questions about the content on the screen, get information from their Gmail, Keep, Drive, and YouTube, and compare tab contents. As part of the new rollout, Gemini will also support languages including Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Telugu, and Tamil, in addition to English and Chrome’s other newly supported languages. Users who get access to this feature will see an “Ask Gemini” icon on the tab bar, which they can activate for any tab and ask questions, summarize content, or create a quiz to understand a topic. Google said that Gemini can also work across tabs. This means you can mention multiple tabs to get an …

Google Chrome Gets Built-In Split View and PDF Annotations

Google has added three new features to the Chrome desktop browser, including split view for multitasking, PDF annotations, and a Save to Google Drive option. Split view for Chrome is a built-in tool that supports using two tabs at the same time side-by-side. Google says that it provides a more streamlined, flexible way to work. There is a split view icon in Chrome that can be clicked to enter the new view. With PDF annotations, the Chrome PDF Viewer can be used to highlight text, insert signatures, and add notes. The Save to Google Drive feature is meant to make it easier for users to locate their downloads. PDFs can be saved to Google Drive from Chrome without redownloading and re-uploading them. Google Drive has a “Saved from Chrome” folder for downloaded files. Chrome takes on AI browsers with tighter Gemini integration, agentic features for autonomous tasks

2025 was the year when a swarm of AI browsers from companies like OpenAI, Perplexity, Opera, and The Browser Company launched with an aim to replace Chrome with features like sidebar assistants and automated tasks. Now, Google is flexing its own AI muscles by adding similar features to Chrome, the world’s largest browser by market share. While Google had introduced Gemini to Chrome last September, the assistant lived in a floating window. With this update, the company will put its AI helper into a persistent sidebar, so you can ask questions about the current website or other open tabs. One interesting feature Google demoed to press ahead of today’s launch involved multiple tabs. When you open different tabs from a single webpage, the Gemini sidebar understands them as a context group. This is helpful when you are comparing prices or different products you’re considering purchasing. Google Chrome 150 Will Be Last Version to Support macOS Monterey

Google has confirmed that its Chrome 150 browser update coming later this year will be the last version to support macOS Monterey. Going forward, Chrome 150 and later versions will no longer support macOS 12, which Apple released in October 2021. In a platform status update, Google says that on Macs running Monterey, Chrome 150 will continue to work, but the browser will display a warning infobar and will not update any further. For new installations of Chrome 151+, macOS 13 or newer will be required. Google has not announced an exact release date for Chrome 150. But based on the current stable channel being at version 143 and that Google typically releases major new Chrome versions roughly every four weeks, Chrome 150 is likely to be rolled out sometime around mid-2026. To stay up-to-date with the latest browsing standards and to maintain online security, users on Monterey should update their macOS version, or choose another third-party browser like Firefox that is still receiving updates for their version of macOS.
