The Hack That Exposed Syria’s Sweeping Security Failures

The Hack That Exposed Syria’s Sweeping Security Failures

When a wave of unusual activity swept through Syrian government accounts on X in March, it first looked like pure chaos—trolling, parody names, and even explicit content. But beneath the noise lay something far more telling: a state still struggling with the most basic layer of its cybersecurity. In early March, several official Syrian government accounts on X—including those linked to the presidency’s General Secretariat, the Central Bank, and multiple ministries—were hacked. The compromised profiles posted “Glory to Israel,” retweeted explicit material, and briefly renamed themselves after Israeli leaders. Authorities moved to restore control within days, with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology announcing “urgent steps” to recover the accounts and prevent further breaches. Yet what remained unsettled was the deeper question: How secure is the state’s digital front door? In a government now dependent on commercial platforms for communication, losing a verified account doesn’t just disrupt messaging—it silences the state’s voice. When the State Stops Speaking for Itself At first glance, the breach appeared politically charged. Pro‑Israel messages circulating on verified government accounts …

De-fi platform Drift suspends deposits and withdrawals after millions in crypto stolen in hack

De-fi platform Drift suspends deposits and withdrawals after millions in crypto stolen in hack

Decentralized finance company Drift says it has suspended withdrawals and deposits after confirming a security incident.  The crypto platform said in a post on X that it was “experiencing an active attack,” and that it was working to “contain the incident.” Security researchers and public blockchain data suggest the losses could be significant. Blockchain security firm CertiK said on X that hackers may have stolen around $136 million, while crypto analytics firm Arkham put the figure at around $285 million stolen. If confirmed, this would make the Drift hack the largest crypto theft of the year, according to the Rekt leaderboard, a site that tracks crypto thefts by size. It’s not clear who is behind the attack, and a spokesperson for Drift did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Security firms say North Korea was behind the most crypto thefts last year, netting at least $2 billion in stolen cryptocurrency, funds the regime is believed to use to finance its nuclear weapons program and skirt international sanctions that restrict its access to the …

Leaked DarkSword iPhone Hack Is ‘Extremely Worrisome.’ How to Secure Your Phone Now

Leaked DarkSword iPhone Hack Is ‘Extremely Worrisome.’ How to Secure Your Phone Now

Calling all iPhone owners: Cybersecurity researchers from the Google Threat Intelligence Group and two cybersecurity firms, Lookout and iVerify, have identified a new hacking toolkit that makes data of iPhone owners vulnerable. The toolkit, called DarkSword, isn’t like other spyware and malware. This is what you need to know — and the easy fix you can do now to stay safe. DarkSword doesn’t use phishing texts or emails, nor does it require you to download suspicious apps to let hackers into your device. It operates through a “watering hole attack,” Christoph Hebeisen, Lookout’s director of security intelligence research, told CNET. Hackers create infected websites, including ones made to look like Snapchat and government contractor sites.  “As a result, such attacks are not only stealthier but also more capable with respect to what data they can access on the device,” said Hebeisen. After you’ve browsed those sites, the spyware can be activated and your information is at risk. DarkSword isn’t designed for ongoing surveillance but can access a variety of data, including your messages, iCloud content and even crypto wallets. So …

The Jefferson Hack to Control Anger

The Jefferson Hack to Control Anger

Our Founding Fathers not only left us with a democratic republic but with helpful advice about living a good life, often expressed in the form of an aphorism, a short or pithy statement that expresses a general truth. You’re probably familiar with Ben Franklin’s aphorism “a penny saved is a penny earned,” which today would likely translate to a dollar saved, as pennies are no longer being minted. But this aphorism harnesses the power of pith to remind us about the importance of not squandering our earnings, whether in dollars or cents. Franklin also left us with this sage advice about using time wisely: “Lost time is never found again.” There was also Franklin’s familiar though frequently ignored admonition, “Do not put off till tomorrow what you can do today.” But it was Thomas Jefferson to whom we turned for advice about controlling anger. In my last blog, I referenced Jefferson’s aphorism, “When angry, count ten before you speak; if very angry, a hundred.” In this, Jefferson recognized the need to control anger before it …

A dietitian says this is the most overlooked hack to reduce bloating after meals

Whether you’re on a weight loss journey or just looking to improve your wellbeing through nutrition, you might find yourself spending a lot of time thinking about what you should eat and when to eat it. But, according to registered dietitian Clementine Vaughan, considering how you eat is also important. “On social media, you will see everyone trying to convince you to focus on what you should eat or drink, and which supplements to take—but rarely do they discuss how you’re eating,” Vaughan tells Fit&Well. Article continues below You may like According to Vaughan, eating too quickly is one of the most common causes of bloating after meals and is often overlooked. While what you put on your plate is important, rushing through a meal can increase the amount of air you swallow with each bite, leaving you feeling bloated. It also means you’re less likely to chew properly, which is an essential way your body prepares your digestive system for food. “Eating too fast doesn’t give your digestive system time to prepare and process, …

Princess Diana’s style icon status has never wavered. Her illustrious yet modern fashion choices have always stood the test of time – from her cycling shorts to her ‘revenge’ dress. 1 Productivity Hack That Could Be Making You Anxious

1 Productivity Hack That Could Be Making You Anxious

We live in an era so obsessed with motivation and productivity that we try to squeeze more meaning, more status, and more identity out of every hour. And yet, paradoxically, individuals are reporting higher levels of distress and productivity anxiety than ever before. In a 2024 study, researchers found that 80 percent of employees reported anxiety tied directly to productivity expectations and metrics, which marks a sharp increase from recent years. With this in mind, it’s important to consider that the recent drive to optimize our productivity might not be as positive — or even neutral — as we think. Instead, it’s more likely that the core habits we think are making us more effective are actually increasing anxiety, day by day. Here’s a breakdown of this paradoxical productivity feedback loop, according to psychological research. The Productivity Habit That Isn’t What It Seems Consider how productivity culture has evolved over the last decade. Gone are the days when your “productivity” referred to your ability to complete necessary tasks. Instead, today, it’s tracked, gamified, quantified, and …

Princess Anne’s strict drinking hack that helps her navigate her busy royal schedule

Princess Anne’s strict drinking hack that helps her navigate her busy royal schedule

Often dubbed the hardest-working royal, the secret to Princess Anne’s go-getting mindset may be her decision to abstain from drinking any alcoholic beverages. Appearing at multiple engagements a week, the only daughter of the late Queen Elizabeth II is teetotal, and it might explain her never-ending social battery.  The Princess Royal, 75, won’t be caught with a glass of expensive Champagne in her hand while out and about at various charity events and the like, as she made the decision to stay sober, much like her younger brother, the former prince, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, 66.  Despite other working royals dabbling in a cocktail or two, including the late Queen, who reportedly enjoyed a cocktail inherited from the Queen Mother, made from Dubonnet, a French drink by Pernod Ricard, and gin, Anne refuses to touch alcohol at charity events due to her ongoing packed schedule.  Her former private secretary, Captain Sir Nicholas Wright RN, revealed Anne doesn’t drink alcohol during an interview for ITV’s documentary, Anne: The Princess Royal at 70, and said: “I’m very jealous, the princess …
