Smart motorways were halted over safety concerns – what’s the future for digital roads?

For many people, the rollout of smart technology across the UK’s road network has been clouded by fears about the removal of traffic-free safety lanes. Traditionally, motorway hard shoulders offered motorists a safe haven into which they could steer stricken vehicles. But amid growing traffic numbers, the rationale for smart motorways (part of the UK government’s wider digital roads plan) was to free up these extra lanes to traffic. During a breakdown, the remote monitoring system could then quickly reinstate a temporary hard shoulder while the broken down or crashed vehicle was removed. However, since the first official smart motorway system was introduced on the M42 near Birmingham 20 years ago, the public has repeatedly raised concerns that being stranded in a live lane rather than on a hard shoulder can be more dangerous. In 2020, BBC Panorama reported that 38 people had been killed on smart motorways in the preceding five years. Since then, campaign groups have continued to highlight fatal collisions on smart motorway stretches where broken-down vehicles have been struck in live …

Sky News halted for breaking alert and it’s terrible for Brits travelling abroad | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

Sky News ground to a halt this afternoon for a breaking announcement – and it could be very bad news for British people wanting to travel abroad this summer. As the breaking news banner flashed across the bottom of the screen, the show’s presenter began: “Breaking news to bring you now. This is from the International Energy Agency Chief Fatih Birol, saying that Europe may have six weeks or so of jet fuel left, warning of possible flight cancellations.” He added: “We, of course, heard similar warnings from the boss of Europe’s biggest airline, Ryanair, in previous weeks as well, talking about potential disruption through the course of the early summer. As we approach mid-April, that would align with about June, according to these warnings from Fatih Birol.” The Sky News host said he was sure the markets would be watching the outcomes of any potential talks between the US and Iran very closely. He added: “For the moment, looking at maritime tracking data right now live, it is showing a pretty bleak scene across …

Trump White House Ballroom Halted by Judge as Congress Shows Little Support

Trump White House Ballroom Halted by Judge as Congress Shows Little Support

Donald Trump’s $400 million plan to remake the White House with a sprawling ballroom has hit a familiar Washington obstacle: Congress—and a judge who says he cannot go around it. A federal judge earlier this week, passionately and emphatically, ordered construction on the project to stop unless lawmakers authorize it, throwing the future of the ballroom into doubt and forcing the administration into a choice it has so far avoided: fight on Capitol Hill or in the courts.  On Capitol Hill, there is little sign of a rescue. Democrats have dismissed the project outright, while Republicans have largely steered clear of the issue, wary of tying themselves to a costly and unpopular proposal in a midterm election cycle.  Related Articles The ruling itself left little room for interpretation. In a sharply worded opinion, U.S. District Judge Richard Leon rejected the administration’s claim that the president could proceed without congressional approval, writing that Trump is “the steward of the White House,” not its owner.  That finding cuts directly against the logic of the project. Trump has …

Execution of former Florida police officer convicted of raping and murdering 11-year-old girl is halted

Execution of former Florida police officer convicted of raping and murdering 11-year-old girl is halted

The execution of a former Florida police officer, convicted of raping and murdering an 11-year-old girl, has been temporarily halted by the state’s Supreme Court. James Aren Duckett, 68, was scheduled to receive a three-drug injection on Tuesday at Florida State Prison near Starke. Duckett was sentenced to death in 1988 after being found guilty of first-degree murder and sexual battery. As part of his appeals process, he had sought DNA testing, arguing it could prove his innocence. A circuit court granted this request, and the testing is still pending. The Florida Supreme Court has now ordered the state to provide an update on the DNA testing’s status by 5 p.m. on Friday. Should the stay not be lifted by Tuesday, the future timing of the execution remains uncertain. With a record 19 executions last year, Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis oversaw more executions in a single year in 2025 than any other Florida governor since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976. The previous record was set in 2014 with eight executions. According to court …

Anthropic Supply-Chain Risk Designation Halted By Judge

Anthropic Supply-Chain Risk Designation Halted By Judge

Anthropic won a preliminary injunction barring the US Department of Defense from labeling it a supply-chain risk, potentially clearing the way for customers to resume working with the company. The ruling on Thursday by Rita Lin, a federal district judge in San Francisco, is a symbolic setback for the Pentagon and a significant boost for the generative AI company as it tries to preserve its business and reputation. “Defendants’ designation of Anthropic as a ‘supply chain risk’ is likely both contrary to law and arbitrary and capricious,” Lin wrote in justifying the temporary relief. “The Department of War provides no legitimate basis to infer from Anthropic’s forthright insistence on usage restrictions that it might become a saboteur.” Anthropic and the Pentagon did not immediately respond to requests to comment on the ruling. The Department of Defense, which calls itself the Department of War, has relied on Anthropic’s Claude AI tools for writing sensitive documents and analyzing classified data over the past couple of years. But this month, it began pulling the plug on Claude after …

Gender-affirming hormone treatment for teenagers halted by NHS | UK News

Hormone drugs will not be prescribed by the NHS to new under-18 patients who are transitioning genders following a review into the treatment’s effectiveness. The masculinising or feminising hormones have been available on the NHS for 16 and 17-year-olds diagnosed with gender dysphoria who meet certain criteria – but new referrals have been paused from Monday. Any teenage patients in that age bracket currently receiving cross-sex hormones can continue to receive the therapy, but it must be reviewed individually with clinicians. The NHS England review found the evidence is too weak to show whether such medication is beneficial or harmful to children with gender dysphoria. It is understood the NHS is continuing to look at evidence for masculinising and feminising hormones for adults. Blender iPad App Development Halted as Android Tablets Get Priority

Blender iPad App Development Halted as Android Tablets Get Priority

Blender‘s work on a native iPad version of its open source 3D creation suite has been shelved, according to the development team. Back in July, Blender revealed that it was developing for iPad, with an iPad Pro version of its desktop software coming first, complete with a fully-featured multitouch interface and support for Apple Pencil Pro. No release date was announced at the time. Now it doesn’t look like that’s about to happen anytime soon. In January, a status update appeared on Blender’s GitHub page for iPad development saying that the project is on hold until further notice. No reason for the halt in development was given in the notice. However, as spotted by YouTuber Brad Colbow, in a response to a comment offering help on the project, Blender developer Dalai Felinto said that the team was now focusing on Android tablets first instead. During the fall at SIGGRAPH in Vancouver, Blender showed a live tech demo of the software running on iPad, so there’s still hope that the project isn’t completely dead and will …
