The Devil Still Wears Prada, But Hangs Up Her Own Coat

The Devil Still Wears Prada, But Hangs Up Her Own Coat

The Devil Wears Prada took place amid the glorious roar of capitalism. The hit 2006 comedy took place in a world where magazines were still triumphant, with Runway, a fictional, Vogue-esque publication the film was centered on, sitting firmly atop the heap. The only concern was whether Andy Sachs, a plucky aspiring journalist played by Anne Hathaway, could survive working as the assistant to Runway’s imperious editor in chief, Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), without totally losing her sense of self. But in The Devil Wears Prada 2, Hollywood’s latest nostalgia-baiting follow-up film, the crisis is no longer personal—it’s existential. Ahead of watching the sequel, I worried about what I thought would be a lazy parade of fan service; I feared that the movie would lob catchphrases and cameos at the audience like dead fish to a herd of clapping seals. (This often seems to be Hollywood’s view of its customer base too.) At first, the story is a bit of a retread: 20 years later, Runway still exists, and Miranda still rules it with a …

McIlroy hangs on for share of lead after madcap third round

McIlroy hangs on for share of lead after madcap third round

This moment was a central storyline in the theatre, but for so long for McIlroy it seemed – to adapt the Masters motto – a perdition like no other. This is not the first time that Augusta National has turned a procession into a recession for the pacesetter and into a cavalry chase for the rest. And it was not the first time that McIlroy had seen his lead gobbled up and spat back in his face. McIlroy knows from his own experience that shots here can scatter like confetti on the breeze. And if he cannot remember 2011, when he fired that final-round 80 – and believe it, he can – then this Saturday roller coaster can serve as a timely reminder. From the off, his record six-shot advantage became two in less than half an hour. Patrick Reed, his sometime nemesis, birdied the first three and with McIlroy bogeying the first and failing to birdie the par-five second, the yawning gap was suddenly tighter. No matter. Reed began to fade away, with his …

Trump shares skit mocking Keir Starmer as PM ‘hangs up’ on President | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

Starmer is apprehensive about speaking to Donald Trump because he might “shout at me.” (Image: AP) President Trump took another swipe at the UK after he posted a Saturday Night Live clip that appeared to mock Prime Minister Keir Starmer on his Truth Social account. In the sketch, the actor portraying a trembling Starmer is apprehensive about speaking to Donald Trump because he might “shout at me.” Once he answers the phone, the actor playing Trump says “hello?” and is immediately hung up on as the Prime Minister screams. It’s subsequently revealed in the comedy routine that Starmer is frightened of rejecting the U.S. president’s demands for British warships to be deployed to the Persian Gulf to help reopen the vital Strait of Hormuz. “I just hate conflict so much,” the SNL UK actor says. This follows another one of Trump’s scathing attacks on the UK prime minister as he grows increasingly frustrated with US allies and their approach to his confrontation with Iran, which they’ve declined to support. Risk of Missteps Hangs Over US-Backed Ceasefire Deal in Northeast Syria

Risk of Missteps Hangs Over US-Backed Ceasefire Deal in Northeast Syria

(Refiles to add opening quotation mark in paragraph 22) By Feras Dalatey, Suleiman Al-Khalidi, Orhan Qereman and Jonathan Spicer Feb 13 (Reuters) – A U.S.-backed ceasefire agreement in northeastern Syria leaves thorny questions unresolved, as Kurds seek to retain some authority despite a much weakened hand following the rapid advance of central government forces. The progress of the deal tests the ability of Syria’s new leaders to stabilise a nation fractured by 14 years of war, following several bouts of violence pitting it against minority groups who are suspicious of the Islamist-led government. The struggle for Syria’s northeast has brought the biggest shift ‌in control since former leader Bashar al-Assad was ousted in December ‌2024. After months of deadlock, Damascus seized swathes of territory from the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) before agreeing to the plan that foresees its remaining enclave being integrated into the state. Preliminary steps have gone smoothly since the January 29 agreement: small contingents of government forces have deployed into two Kurdish-run cities, fighters have withdrawn from frontlines, and Damascus on …

Media Is Changing, and Democracy Hangs in the Balance

Media Is Changing, and Democracy Hangs in the Balance

Oana Martisca is a Romanian-born filmmaker who found herself most at home in the journalistic community in Miami. Martisca spent two years chronicling the current state of journalism. She interviewed dozens of renowned reporters and editors, including former Washington Post executive editor Marty Baron. Her new documentary, “News Without a Newsroom,” premiered at the Miami Film Festival and has won more than 10 awards around the world. The film reveals how dwindling attention spans, changing media business models, and rapid technological change are recasting the future of news and democracy. This conversation has been edited for length and clarity. In the film, the head of the American Journalism Project says the decline of local news happened over a generation, and it will take a generation to rebound. How will it regrow? I don’t have the solution. I don’t think anybody does. I do think she’s right. Although it looks like it happened overnight, this change took time. It’s going to take some time to repair it or relearn how to better deal with it. The …

Donald Trump warns of “very strong action” if Iran hangs protesters

Donald Trump warns of “very strong action” if Iran hangs protesters

US President Donald Trump has warned that “very strong action” could follow if Iranian authorities carry out threatened executions of protesters, as international outrage continues to grow over a crackdown that rights groups say has killed thousands. While France 24 has been unable to independently verify the death toll, the unrest represents one of the most serious challenges yet to Iran’s clerical leadership. Tehran has dismissed the US warnings as a “pretext for military intervention.” Fraser Jackson reports from Washington. Keywords for this article Source link
