Starmer has appointed Brown as special envoy on global finance, with the former prime minister having visited Downing Street on Saturday morning.  Harman, who was deputy leader of the Labour Party between 2007 and 2015 and now sits in the House of Lords, has been appointed as Starmer’s adviser on women and girls. Starmer risks misleading Commons claims if Mandelson story doesn’t match files, warns Harman | Politics News

Sir Keir Starmer will face accusations he misled the Commons over his appointment of Peter Mandelson if there is not “absolute consistency” between what he told MPs and government files, Harriet Harman has said. The former Labour deputy leader’s comments on Sky’s Electoral Dysfunction podcast come after the government published documents detailing the vetting process undergone by Lord Mandelson when he was made US ambassador last year. He was subsequently sacked over his friendship with paedophile Jeffrey Epstein. Politics latest: Starmer facing questions after files released Baroness Harman told Sky News politics editor Beth Rigby: “I’m sure the opposition will be looking at the documents to see whether or not there’s absolute consistency between what the prime minister said to the House of Commons and what’s in the documents, because if there’s not then it will raise the issue of misleading the House.” The veteran Labour peer, who was deputy leader while Lord Mandelson was in Gordon Brown’s cabinet, led the parliamentary inquiry into whether Boris Johnson misled the House of Commons over the partygate …

The former Labour cabinet minister told Beth Rigby on the Electoral Dysfunction podcast that the prime minister’s trip to the world’s second-largest economy was intended to improve the financial situation of voters in the UK. However, she said the government would remain “clear-eyed” about potential threats from Beijing. Politics live: Starmer strikes deals on visas and whisky After meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Sir Keir confirmed UK citizens would get 30-day visa-free entry to China, and that whisky tariffs would be halved. Ms Harman said: “The overwhelming imperative for the government is to get growth in the UK economy and for people’s living standards to improve. “And China being the second-largest economy in the world with increasing difficulties with the US. “You know, it’s just, as he said, it’s the pragmatism, and when [Sir Keir] was speaking with the business delegation on camera, saying, actually, this is all about people back home. “I think that you can see, and …

Harriet Harman: Why Labour’s ‘shambles’ social media plan won’t be fixed by ban | Politics News

The “shambles” of the government’s plan on social media will not be fixed by banning children from accessing the platforms, Harriet Harman has said. Speaking to Sky News political editor Beth Rigby on the Electoral Dysfunction podcast, the Labour peer cast doubt upon whether a ban on under-16s using social media – as supported by the House of Lords – is workable. The proposals passed by the Lords still need to be agreed by MPs before they become law. The government wants to hold a consultation before committing to a ban. Harman pointed to existing legislation like the Online Harms Bill, Crime and Policing Bill, Data Use and Access Bill, before even considering the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill under which peers and some MPs want a social media ban to be legislated.
