Democrat and Republican Voters United on Key Issue: Hatred of Data Centers

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech Across the entire country, small rural communities are standing up to the rise of AI data centers, saying the enormous facilities threaten to suck water supplies dry and send electricity prices soaring. It’s become such a contentious issue that many Americans are doing something that often feels impossible in the contemporary political landscape: setting aside their often steep differences in politics to come together and oppose proposals for large-scale data centers. As the New York Times reports, conservatives and liberals alike are joining sides on the issue to an astonishing degree — a home run for any candidate willing to throw their weight behind the phenomenon. “There was stunningly little difference for our normally extremely polarized state,” Marquette University Law School Poll director Charles Franklin, who recently found that 70 percent of Wisconsin voters say the cons of data centers outweigh the pros, told the newspaper. “This is the most bipartisan issue since beer,” joked Milwaukee-based comedian Charlie …

‘Stranger Things: Tales From ’85’ review: This baffling prequel won’t cure the Season 5 hatred

Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 might be the most bizarre step Stranger Things could have taken. Take the release date, for starters. Tales From ’85 airs just four months after the Stranger Things series finale. That gives fans barely any breathing room between the end of the flagship series and the beginning of this animated spin-off, proof of Netflix’s ambitious, nonstop designs to turn one of its most original shows into a massive franchise. (It’s already got a stage play, books, and games to its name.) SEE ALSO: ‘Stranger Things’ fans are furious about the finale. Here’s why. There’s just one big wrinkle in that plan: Stranger Things‘ final season was so controversial, it left distraught fans theorizing about a secret surprise episode and accusing the Duffer Brothers of writing Season 5 with ChatGPT. The outrage is still too fresh for another TV trip to Hawkins, Indiana, to go the way Netflix hoped. That trip back to Hawkins doesn’t actually move the story of Stranger Things forward. Instead, Tales From ’85 returns to the past, …

Politics Home | Government In Talks With Muslim MPs Over Final Anti‑Muslim Hatred Definition

Politics Home | Government In Talks With Muslim MPs Over Final Anti‑Muslim Hatred Definition

(Alamy) 2 min read2 hr The government is holding meetings with Muslim MPs in a bid to finalise the wording of an anti-Muslim hatred definition, PoliticsHome understands. In October, PoliticsHome revealed that the definition, which is being led by the communities department, will not refer to Islamophobia. Instead, it will refer to anti-Muslim hostility. In an effort to tackle the rise in hate crimes towards Muslims in the UK, the Labour government asked an independent working group, led by former Conservative cabinet minister Dominic Grieve KC, to produce a new definition for ministers to consider.  Throughout the process, the government has sought to stress that any new definition will not infringe on freedom of speech, and that it is not obliged to accept what the working group proposes. The government is in the final stages of agreeing on the exact wording of the definition. It could be published as soon as this month, PoliticsHome understands. One of the outstanding issues is whether to include the word “racialisation”.  A draft definition seen by PoliticsHome late last year described “the prejudicial stereotyping and …

New psychology research shows that hatred is not just intense anger

New psychology research shows that hatred is not just intense anger

A new study suggests that anger and hatred are not merely different intensities of the same feeling but are distinct emotional systems with unique evolutionary functions. The study indicates that while anger motivates individuals to negotiate for better treatment, hatred drives them to neutralize or remove a threat. These findings were published in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior. Scientists have long debated the relationship between anger and hatred. Some psychological models suggest hatred is simply a more intense or durable form of anger. Other perspectives argue they are qualitatively different. The authors of the current study approached this debate through an adaptationist framework. This perspective views human emotions as evolved mechanisms designed to solve specific problems faced by our ancestors. “Anger and hatred are both central to conflict and aggression, but in everyday conversation—and often in research—they get treated as basically the same thing, just different intensities of ‘being mad,” said study author Mitchell Landers, a postdoctoral Scholar at the University of California, San Diego. “From an evolutionary perspective, that’s a strong claim. But …

NSS seeks Government assurances on anti-Muslim hatred definition

NSS seeks Government assurances on anti-Muslim hatred definition

The National Secular Society has called on the Government to guarantee a new definition of anti-Muslim hatred will be subject to public consultation. A working group, tasked with developing a definition of anti-Muslim hatred / Islamophobia is understood to have delivered its findings to the Government in October. Writing to Steve Reed, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, the NSS raised concerns that the Government’s handling of the process to reach a finalised definition risked “limiting necessary discussion and debate”. It asked Reed to guarantee that any proposed definition will be subject to a “full, open, and transparent public consultation before being adopted or implemented in any form”. The NSS has consistently warned that ‘Islamophobia’ definitions and terminology stifle freedom of speech relating to religion, highlighting how accusations of Islamophobia have already been used to suppress lawful and necessary public debate. It has met with the working group to raise its concerns. Reed has previously said he would reject any definition that restricts freedom of expression, stating that people “don’t have a …

‘Focus on the Family’ … and hatred? – OpentheWord.org

Focus on the Family Webpage You have probably heard of a Christian organization “Focus on the Family.” You may have also heard of another organization the “Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).” These are two groups with different purposes, but I think most of us would agree that the intentions behind both organizations are good. Both groups want to help people who could use their help. “Focus on the Family” gives direction and advice to families, from a Christian perspective. The name “Southern Poverty Law Center” explains itself. There are many groups, religious groups and charities, that work hard to help other people, and these are two of them. There is a wrinkle in this story. The SPLC has declared that “Focus on the Family” is a hate group. If you want to know more about this disagreement, it has been reported in the news:  There are a few lesson here for us all, for example: Values can be complicated, good people don’t always agree. We have to know how to be negative without hating. We …
