Romanian gang stole underground BT cables and nearly caused havoc in Birmingham city centre

Three men have been jailed after stealing underground BT cabling and risking havoc in Birmingham city centre. Altafin Poenaru, aged 49, Marian Agarlita, 37, and Sorin Condrache, 45, were caught red-handed by armed police at a manhole on Great Charles Queensway at the junction with Newhall Street on January 20 this year. They had cut seven live cables which contained nearly 8,000 phone and internet lines serving the area, which includes countless businesses as well as government departments. Wild Video Shows Delivery Robots Causing Havoc, Getting Obliterated

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech Deploying delivery robots into the real world inevitably comes with a period of trial and error, but things are getting a little ridiculous. A new video compilation by the TikTok content farm @BoopMePlz shows a collection of rarely-seen delivery robot fails. While some of them are old hat, like the clip of a Coco Robotics bot getting obliterated by a passing train, others have gotten less attention, like the footage showing a six-wheeled bot from Starship Technologies rampaging through a marching band performance in Tennessee. Another shows a car, presumably in Los Angeles, rounding a corner directly into a Coco Robotics delivery bot, which is dragged along as the driver refuses to stop. Another rare snippet featuring Coco declares that “the future is here” as a delivery robot sends itself tumbling down a set of concrete stairs. One clip presumably shows the aftermath of a nasty collision, a Serve Robotics delivery bot limping along with a busted tire …

War threatens to wreak havoc with the global economy, IMF warns – POLITICO

War threatens to wreak havoc with the global economy, IMF warns – POLITICO

The same factors could push global inflation above 6 percent next year, it cautioned. Finance ministers and central bank governors from around the world are set to talk about little else at the IMF-World Bank spring meetings this week in Washington, D.C., and the IMF’s numbers — like many from private-sector forecasters — make clear how serious the risks of a protracted major conflict are. Hoping against hope To be sure, the IMF’s baseline forecast still clings to the hope that things will return to normal by the middle of the year, leaving little more than a small dent in an economy that has performed more strongly over the last year than was widely feared when U.S. President Donald Trump launched his trade war against the rest of the world. Under this central case scenario, growth would be 3.1 percent this year, only 0.2 percentage points less than the IMF thought in January. In 2027, it would be 3.2 percent, unchanged from the January forecast. But under a severe scenario, with lengthy disruption to shipping …

US targets Iran mine-laying as war causes oil market havoc

The United States said Tuesday it was striking Iranian ships capable of mining the crucial Strait of Hormuz and threatened escalation if Tehran presses ahead, as the Middle East war wreaks havoc on global oil markets. The US military posted video footage of Iranian boats blasted by missiles and other projectiles as it said it had destroyed 16 minelayers near the Strait of Hormuz, the chokepoint to the Gulf through which one-fifth of the world’s oil passes. Amazon Admits Extensive AI Use Is Wreaking Havoc on Its Core Business

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech Businesses are learning the hard way that rapidly deploying AI tools — and forcing or strongly encouraging their employees to use them — can backfire severely. The latest appears to be Amazon — though one can debate whether it’s taking away the right lessons. On Tuesday, the Financial Times reports, the ecommerce giant summoned a large group of engineers to a meeting addressing recent outages plaguing its online retail business, some of them related to AI coding tools. In a meeting briefing note, the company described the “trend of incidents” as characterized by a “high blast radius” and “Gen-AI assisted changes.” As a “contributing factor,” the note listed “novel GenAI usage for which best practices and safeguards are not yet fully established.” “Folks, as you likely know, the availability of the site and related infrastructure has not been good recently,” Dave Treadwell, a senior vice-president at Amazon’s eCommerce Services, told employees in an email, per the FT. The …

GPS Attacks Near Iran Are Wreaking Havoc on Delivery and Mapping Apps

GPS Attacks Near Iran Are Wreaking Havoc on Delivery and Mapping Apps

People on social media have reported strange events on delivery and navigation apps—drivers appear to be in the middle of the sea, or a 10-minute trip home suddenly jumps up to 30 minutes. For residents of countries in the Gulf Cooperation Council, or GCC, where life has more or less resumed despite Iran’s ongoing attacks, this is a subtle reminder that there is still a war being waged overhead. These problems are widely linked to electronic warfare. In today’s conflicts, disrupting satellite navigation is a common tactic. By interfering with GPS, militaries make it harder for opponents to guide drones, missiles, or surveillance tools accurately. But the same satellite signals used by the military also power civilian aircraft, shipping, infrastructure, and everyday navigation apps. When those signals are disrupted, the effects ripple out to airlines, shipping routes, logistics, and digital services that all depend on accurate location and timing. These disruptions generally happen through two related but distinct techniques: GPS jamming and GPS spoofing. Understanding the difference explains why navigation sometimes stops working and, at …

Your Morning Commute Could Be Wreaking Havoc On Your Skin

Your Morning Commute Could Be Wreaking Havoc On Your Skin

The quest for healthy, glowing skin can feel challenging during the winter months, with cold temperatures, icy winds, and dry indoor heating stripping the skin of moisture, leaving it dull, dehydrated, and more prone to irritation. But it’s not just the weather working against us, with our daily commutes also taking a toll. It could actually be causing some significant damage and it’s important that we know how to treat it. Louise Walsh from Savoo, also known as The Skin Nurse, reveals the biggest things to watch out for, as well as simple skin remedies, and the common mistakes that so many of us make that could be leading to issues! How does a typical daily commute impact our skin, particularly in busy cities? She says: “a daily commute exposes the skin to multiple stressors at once, including pollution, temperature changes, wind, and low humidity. In busy cities, pollution particles settle on the skin and trigger inflammation, while moving between cold outdoor air and heated indoor spaces weakens the skin barrier. Over time, this can …

EU’s Deadly New Weapon Against Press Freedom: Already Wreaking Havoc

EU’s Deadly New Weapon Against Press Freedom: Already Wreaking Havoc

Via Remix News, In an extraordinary case that could decide the future of press rights in Europe, Berlin-based German-Turkish journalist Hüseyin Doğru is currently under European Union sanctions for his reporting, which left him completely unable to access his bank account for months. Under orders from the EU, his assets were frozen, and these sanctions were dispensed with no trial or appeal. Currently, Doğru says he is not even allowed to leave Germany. As Berliner Zeitung reports, Doğru completely exhausted all financial means, telling the paper that his bank has completely blocked access to his previously approved minimum subsistence allowance of €506. He stated that he can no longer support his family or even buy food for his two newborn children. “Not only I, but also my wife and my three children are effectively being sanctioned,” Doğru, a left-wing journalist, said in the interview. “The sanctions themselves stipulate that I am entitled to access to essential funds. The fact that my bank is nevertheless blocking these funds violates applicable law in my view,” he told …
