Powerful Winds and Reported Tornadoes Rip Through the Midwest, Leaving Heavy Damage but No Deaths

A trail of damaged homes and buildings dotted a wide swath of the U.S. on Saturday after a burst of destructive winds and reported tornadoes tore off roofs, uprooted trees and rendered rural roads impassable with debris. No deaths were reported following Friday’s storms, which barreled through the Upper Midwest and delivered the latest round of severe weather to batter the region. Officials braced residents for a long recovery in some rural communities. “We are extremely fortunate that this storm did not result in loss of life or serious injury,” Stephenson County Sheriff Steve Stovall said of the storm that hit Lena, Illinois. Officials in Wisconsin and Minnesota echoed those sentiments. In central Wisconsin, a reported tornado that tore through the cities of Kronenwetter and Ringle left behind damaged homes and some residents briefly trapped in their basements, Ringle Fire Chief Chris Kielman told reporters. Marathon County Sheriff Chad Billeb said he had not seen this much devastation during his 34 years in law enforcement. “A lot of people are going to need a lot …

Meghan Trainor offloads $6.8m mansion after undergoing ‘heavy therapy’ and cancelling tour

Meghan Trainor has made a dramatic double move, offloading her sprawling Los Angeles mansion on the very same day she revealed she was cancelling her highly anticipated tour. The All About That Bass hitmaker, 32, quietly closed the deal on Thursday for $6,835,000 after the property spent barely a week on the market, according to reports. While the lightning-fast sale might raise eyebrows, the price tag represents only a modest gain for the singer, who purchased the estate in 2020 for $6.6 million. © Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for LivMeghan Trainor performs onstage at TD Pavillion Set across an impressive 14,164 square feet on more than an acre of land, the jaw-dropping home is every bit the A-list retreat. With seven bedrooms and 10 bathrooms, it offers not just space but serious star power, complete with a private recording studio, mirror-lined gym and even a full-size basketball court. But it’s the lifestyle touches that truly elevate the property. Outside, the estate leans fully into resort-style living, boasting a pool with a waterslide, spa, tennis court, putting green, fire …

Von der Leyen waits just 17 minutes to celebrate Orbán’s heavy defeat – POLITICO

Von der Leyen waits just 17 minutes to celebrate Orbán’s heavy defeat – POLITICO

European People’s Party leader Manfred Weber, to which the victorious Tisza opposition party belongs, also couldn’t contain his glee at Orbán’s defeat. Orbán’s populist-nationalist Fidesz party left the center-right EPP group in 2021 to join the far-right Patriots for Europe. “Tonight is the victory of the people of Hungary!” Weber wrote. “They confirm that our centre-right, people-first politics win elections.”  “Substance. Solutions. Unity — not empty slogans and fears,” he added.  Orbán’s 16-year reign ended Sunday night with a landslide victory for the center-right opposition, led by Magyar, who is on track to win around two-thirds of the 199 seats in Budapest’s parliament.  Many of the political reactions to Orbán’s loss focused on what his defeat would mean for Europe, after years in which he thwarted EU unanimity on matters such as aid for Ukraine while barracking Brussels for tougher migration rules and nationalist policies. “Hungary’s place is at the heart of Europe,” European Parliament President Roberta Metsola wrote.  French President Emmanuel Macron congratulated Magyar: “Together, let us advance a more sovereign Europe, for the security of our continent, our competitiveness, and our democracy.” Source …

Heavy metals drop, but levels of PFAS in Svalbard reindeer skyrocket

Heavy metals drop, but levels of PFAS in Svalbard reindeer skyrocket

Toxic metals in reindeer populations have dropped over the last decade, but the levels of forever chemicals has risen dramatically, posing concerns about the species that consume the reindeer, which includes polar bears and humans. The Svalbard reindeer are a subspecies of reindeer(or caribou) found only on the island, where they have existed for at least 5,000 years. They are about the third of the size of typical reindeer species and after facing extinction in the early 20th Century, have bounced back to a population of roughly 22,000. The presence of heavy metals and other pollutants have been known to accrue in the Arctic, especially in species at the top of the food chain, such as the polar bear. But the Svalbard reindeer represent the only major grazing animal in the European Arctic, feeding on tundra vegetation and themselves feeding local predator populations- as well as being hunted for their meat by humans- and questions remain about how many organic pollutants are present in their meat and fur. Malin Andersson Stavridis spent four years in …

O’Hara, best known for her work in Home Alone and Schitt’s Creek, died after suffering a pulmonary embolism in January, at the age of 71. She had a key role as Patty Leigh, a mentor figure in Rogen and Goldberg’s Hollywood satire, which swept last year’s Emmys. In a new interview with The Times, Goldberg revealed that the show’s second season had to be rewritten in light of her death. “It has been an unbelievable challenge,” said Goldberg. “Obviously emotionally, dealing with the loss, but also when it comes to the show itself. We wrote it for her to be there. We had it all set and the shock waves permeate throughout the entire …

The Album That Made Me Fall Back in Love With Heavy Metal

The Album That Made Me Fall Back in Love With Heavy Metal

One of the ongoing mysteries of my adult life is why I don’t like heavy metal anymore. Back as a young teenager, distorted riffs with shredded vocals were my introduction to serious music fandom. I remember feeling pride when my dad sized me up in a giant black hoodie and wondered when I’d become a “metalhead.” Somewhere along the way, though, my listening turned toward the delicate or the dance-y. I try to stay current with all sorts of genres, but it’s been extremely rare for metal to pierce my skull. Maybe metal itself has changed: When Tool and Deftones caught my ear in the early 2000s, the genre was a mainstream force. Its musicians seemed to want to conquer the world rather than—as I now perceive whenever I dip in—to burrow in extreme directions for true aficionados. But I suspect that the real reason for my apathy is how I spend my time. One might guess that I grew too soft for noisy aggression, but the truth is that I became too hard, as …
