The first time I got Botox, I wasn’t even 40 years old. I had lines on top of my lip that I hated, and my dermatologist suggested I try a little Botox. These were my first real wrinkles — or at least the first ones that bothered me — and the first sign that serious aging had begun.  I wanted to get ahead of it. After all, celebrities and influencers somehow managed to look young well into their fifties and sixties. How harmful could it be? Turns out, I hate Botox. I felt like a fraud and hated feeling like my face wasn’t moving normally.  One time, I got a little too much and couldn’t drink out of a straw without dribbling. Dribbling while drinking absolutely did not fit into my ideas of what it meant to be “youthful”.  (According to Statista, today’s millennials begin using anti-aging products at an average age of 26, compared to 55-year-olds who didn’t start until age 47.) Earlier this year, a Boston Trader Joe’s worker had their wrongful termination case dismissed by the National Labor Relations Board, with the board providing no other explanation than “lack of cooperation.” This, however, was just the reason given as part of the board’s recent policy of dismissing cases that fall short of their new standard, which requires those bringing cases to gather and present information that was previously gathered by a board investigator. The board explained this is part of a new phase of investigation meant to determine whether a case might be eligible for summary dismissal, at least under the new standard. Under the policy, the charging party — typically an employee or union alleging an unfair labor practice — is required to file a timeline of events related to their allegation, documentation of those events, like communications and phone records, and a list of witnesses they plan to bring and a summary of their testimony. After a year of Donald Trump being restored to the White House, Americans are increasingly sick of the president. In the 2024 presidential election, he clearly benefited from having been out of office — and from the short attention span of swing voters, who clearly forgot the chaos and incompetence that defined the former reality TV host’s first term. Now that he’s in everyone’s faces again, his polls are rapidly sinking. But Trump, ever the narcissist, apparently thought he knew a way to win back the hearts and minds of the American people: by droning at them for nearly two hours in a State of the Union address that was as dishonest as it was tedious. While it’s unlikely he won people over, Trump did showcase his ability to manipulate viewers, largely by saving the worst parts of his speech until most of them had long gone to bed.
