The animated sequel banked $48.3 million in the U.S. on Friday, and is on course to top $129 million domestically over its opening weekend. The previous record for the year was held by the Ryan Gosling-led sci fi movie Project Hail Mary, which recorded a domestic opening weekend of $80.5 million. Zootropolis 2 is now Hollywood’s highest-grossing animated film of all time, earning $1.7bn (£1.3bn) at the box office globally.  The Walt Disney Animation Studios’ film has surpassed the former record holder Inside Out 2, which earned $1.69bn (£1.26b) following its 2024 release. The film, also known as Zootopia 2 in some countries, is now among the top-10 highest-grossing films of all time worldwide, along with Avengers: Endgame, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Titanic. “This milestone belongs first and foremost to the fans around the world whose enthusiasm made it possible,” said Alan Bergman, co-chairman, Disney Entertainment. “Zootopia 2 is an extraordinary achievement, and we’re grateful to everyone who helped bring it to life.” While Zootropolis 2 has broken Hollywood records, China’s Ne Zha 2 remains the top-grossing animated film worldwide after taking $2.2bn (£1.65bn) last year. Scarlett Johansson’s box office reign has come to an end. As of January 12, Zoe Saldaña has dethroned Johansson as the highest-grossing movie star of all time with the help of James Cameron’s Avatar series. Avatar: Fire and Ash, the latest installment in the franchise, hit $1.23 billion at the global box office Tuesday, bringing Saldaña’s total gross to $16.8 billion, according to industry publication The Numbers. The Oscar-winning actor, 47, has steadily climbed the chart throughout her career with leading roles in 18 films, including major blockbusters like the Avatar movies, as well as Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Infinity War and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. After another impressively profitable weekend in theaters, James Cameron’s “Avatar: Fire and Ash” helped crown its star Zoe Saldaña the queen of the box office. The third “Avatar” movie boasted $21.3 million in North American sales last week, bringing it to a global total of $1.23 billion. With those impressive stats, Saldaña officially surpassed Scarlett Johansson as the highest-grossing actor of all time. The Oscar winner has grossed more than $15.47 billion at the international box office, according to box office tracking website the Numbers. Johansson only recently gained the title after surpassing her “Avengers” co-star Samuel L. It’s official, Academy award winner Zoe Saldaña is the highest-grossing actor of all time following the box office success of Avatar: Fire and Ash, which has earned over $1.2 billion at the worldwide box office (and counting). Reprising her role as fierce Na’vi warrior Neytiri has resulted in Saldaña’s impressive achievement, surpassing Scarlett Johansson who gained the top spot last year after her appearance in Jurassic World Rebirth. Saldaña’s work across the three Avatar movies has certainly boosted her up the rankings, with the original 2009 instalment still being the highest-grossing film of all-time, even 17 years after its release, earning over $2.92 billion globally according to Box Office Mojo. Is anyone surprised? After a headline-making press run for Josh Safdies’ ping-pong caper, Timothée Chalamet has smashed A24 records at the U.K. box office. Sources confirmed that Marty Supreme is now, officially, the studio’s highest-grossing release of all time across the Atlantic, having so far accrued $8.6 million as of Jan. 6. The dramedy, also starring Odessa A’zion, Gwyneth Paltrow and Tyler, The Creator, surpassed the previous record-holder — Alex Garland’s 2024 thriller Civil War — in just less than two weeks. The story of the arrogant but assured New Yorker Marty Mauser hit theaters Dec. 26. The film also reigned supreme by nabbing $4.38 million over its first weekend in around 130 locations, another new high for the indie studio and a stat that pips awards rival One Battle After Another to the post.
