War, migration issues and climate upheaval dominated the news. NPR highlighted the “photo of the year’ — Separated by ICE. It was taken by Carol Guzy of the United States for the Miami Herald and captures the pain of a family being separated in a New York court. There were also award winners that offer hope and happiness — like that photo of young ballet students in Johannesburg, South Africa, as they pause for a reflective moment before a performance. It is all the more stirring because before Apartheid came to an end, ballet was an art form typically reserved for white South Africans.  The photographer, Ihsaan Haffejee, based in Johannesburg, says his editor had asked that photojournalists keep an eye open …

James Cameron, one of the industry’s leading champions of the theatrical experience, leads CinemaCon’s roster of honorees for the Big Screen Achievement Awards. The ceremony — a starry gathering that closes the four day gathering of exhibition insiders presented by Cinema United — is set to take place inside the Dolby Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas on April 16. It will see trophies going to James Cameron (Cinema United Spirit of the Industry), Queen Latifah (Cultural Impact in Film), LaKeith Stanfield (Star of the Year), Zoey Deutch (Vanguard Award) Adam Scott (Award of Excellence in Acting), Noah Centineo (Star of Tomorrow) and Catherine Lagaʻaia (Rising Star of 2026). The Paley Center for Media is arranging the pieces for its Paley Honors Spring Gala program. The event — to be held at New York’s The Plaza on Fifth Avenue on May 14 — will honor Vivendi CEO Arnaud de Puyfontaine, Warner Music Group CEO Robert Kyncl and the iconic television show Charlie’s Angels with the organization’s Paley Honors Award. Series stars Kate Jackson, Jaclyn Smith and Cheryl Ladd will be in attendance. “The Paley Honors celebrates the visionaries whose leadership, creativity and transformative ideas have left an indelible mark on our culture,” said Paley Center president and CEO Maureen J. Religion Communicators Council names Wilbur honorees

25 to receive organization’s top honors for 2025 work The Religion Communicators Council (RCC) proudly announces the 2026 Wilbur Award recipients, recognizing exceptional work by 25 media outlets completed in 2025 within the secular (non-religious) media in the fields of print and online journalism, book publishing, podcasts and radio, television and film.   The Wilbur Award is the top honor provided by the RCC and is presented annually to recognize the most outstanding work in the communication of religious issues, values, and themes in secular media. Each winner will receive an individually crafted stained-glass Wilbur trophy. The RCC has presented the Wilbur Awards annually since 1949. Secular communicators enter work in several categories. Juries of media professionals, coordinated by council members across the country, evaluate submissions on content, creativity, impact, and excellence in communicating religious values. The ultimate criterion is brilliance in communication about faith and religion with fairness and professionalism, honesty and respect.  The award is named for the late Marvin C. In the Congo Basin, two groups of wild western lowland gorillas encounter photographer Hugo Hebbe. One group is familiar with humans, reacting with indifference to the attention. The other remains cautious, scamping off when humans approach. The images captured during the encounter (seen below) document “an evolving story of fear, patience and trust,” the photographer explains. The images, part of a series called “Guardians of the Jungle,” were honored at the 2026 Sony World Photography Awards, Professional division. “Egnonga”This young gorilla is named Engonga, meaning ‘joy,’ and at just three months old, he seems to have discovered the human gaze for the very first time. This photograph was taken in Gabon, observing a habituated group. This week, the L.A. Times has announced their 46th annual Book Prizes. Among the honorees and finalists are a wide range of authors, literary advocates, and books across an array of genres. Winners will be announced Friday, April 17 at USC’s Bovard Auditorium, right before the 31st annual a prologue to the 31st annual Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, which runs April 18-19. Among the announced winners are Amy Tan, who will receive the Robert Kirsch Award for lifetime achievement. We Need Diverse Books will take home the Innovator’s Award, which honors efforts that help bring storytelling into the future. The Christopher Isherwood Prize for Autobiographical Prose will be awarded to Adam Ross for his book Playworld. The L.A. Times Book Prizes have 61 finalists competing across 13 different categories.
