Keir Starmer ‘on borrowed time’ as Labour rival threatens his job | Politics | News

The Prime Minister is “on borrowed time” and likely to lead his party to disastrous losses in the upcoming local elections, it has been claimed. Daily Expresso regular Mark Dolan made the claims after a week which saw the Sir Keir Starmer savaged by MPs in the House of Commons after more revelations came to light about the Peter Mandelson saga. Dolan believes that the saga and an expected disastrous performance in May’s local elections could spell the end of his premiership, with a former ally waiting in the wings to replace him. He told Expresso host JJ Anisiobi: “He is now on borrowed time, we have local elections in May, he is going to get eviscerated. Angela Rayner is an interesting character because I believe that her policies will be terrible, she is more to the left of Starmer.” He added: “With a country that is in debt with open borders, you need to go right, not left politically I would humbly suggest. “She is backed by the trade unions who will want their …

Starmer left ‘fuming’ after heated Commons exchange with Speaker

Sir Keir Starmer became embroiled in a heated argument with Sir Lindsay Hoyle after the Speaker ordered him to properly answer Kemi Badenoch’s questions. The exchange was captured on video after Wednesday’s session of Prime Ministers Questions, during which the Prime Minister was reminded that he is supposed to answer rather than ask the questions. “Prime Minister, it’s Prime Minister’s Questions. We’ve got to concentrate,” Sir Lindsay told Sir Keir as the two party leaders clashed on defence. Sir Keir used the session to dismiss criticisms from three authors of the strategic defence review, telling MPs that Labour planned to spend record sums on the military. The Prime Minister could be seen approaching Sir Lindsay’s chair as he left the Chamber to speak to him. One MP told the Daily Mail that Sir Keir was “fuming” with the Speaker, while another told the Guido Fawkes website that Sir Lindsay stood his ground and was trying to say something back but the PM just walked off. It is the third time in recent weeks that the …

Labour MP made £30k from housing scheme denounced by his own party

A Labour MP made more than £30,000 from a taxpayer-funded housing scheme criticised by his party as a “lucrative money-spinning opportunity”. Gurinder Singh Josan, who is the MP for Smethwick, co-owns a five-bedroom house used to accommodate vulnerable people, including drug addicts, asylum seekers and the homeless. For six years, Birmingham city council paid £473,475 to organisations running the property, which housed more than 60 people. Mr Josan and his family received more than £30,000, with the rest going to companies managing the property, The Telegraph understands. The payments were made through the “exempt accommodation” system, which allows landlords to charge the taxpayer higher rents that are not subject to standard housing benefit caps. Gurinder Singh Josan MP with Sir Keir Starmer and Angela Rayner during the 2024 local elections in Dudley – Eddie Keogh/Getty The sector has faced sustained criticism for enabling landlords to profit from housing vulnerable people, often in poor-quality accommodation. In 2022, Shabana Mahmood, now the Home Secretary, criticised it as a “lucrative money-spinning opportunity” for landlords. After being approached by …
