Meet Martin Clunes’ daughter who refused the ‘nepo baby’ spotlight

Meet Martin Clunes’ daughter who refused the ‘nepo baby’ spotlight

Martin Clunes and his wife, Philippa Braithwaite, share one daughter together, and she is determined not to be branded as a nepo-baby despite both parents working in the television industry.  The Wuthering Heights star is back on screens, this time portraying former BBC Newsreader Huw Edwards in Channel 5’s drama series Power: The Downfall Of Huw Edwards, and despite his acting success, there is no chance his child will follow in his footsteps.  Welcoming their daughter Emily Clunes, 26, in 1999, Martin and Phillipa moved to the Dorset countryside in 2007 to raise their only child away from the glare of London’s spotlight.  The actor and film producer relocated to the 130-acre Meerhay Farm in West Dorset’s Beaminster so that they could have access to fields for Emily’s pony. The couple continued to work in the entertainment industry, alongside running their farm that has horses, cattle and sheep.  An ordinary career despite an extraordinary parentage  While many in her shoes would be making their way towards red carpets, Emily leaned into her countryside upbringing and …

Martin Clunes’ Huw Edwards Performance Praised By Critics

Martin Clunes’ Huw Edwards Performance Praised By Critics

Martin Clunes has received widespread praise for his leading performance in a new drama about Huw Edwards, even if the show itself has proved to be more on the divisive side. The Wuthering Heights star portrayed the disgraced BBC News anchor in Power: The Downfall Of Huw Edwards, a feature-length drama which aired on 5 (the broadcaster previously known as Channel 5) on Tuesday evening. After the show aired, the Wuthering Heights actor received unanimous praise for his portrayal of Edwards. However, reviews for the show itself were considerably more mixed, ranging from a lowly two stars in The Independent and The Standard to a perfect score in the Daily Mail. Here’s a selection of what critics have had to say about Power: The Downfall Of Huw Edwards so far… “Martin Clunes is in total go-for-broke mode in the title role, uncannily furrowing his brow to just the right degree and bringing overqualified Welsh-accented gravitas to a script that asks him to repeatedly sink to all kinds of mucky carnal urges. The project he’s in, …

Huw Edwards Scolds Film Depicting Child Sex Abuse Images Scandal

Huw Edwards Scolds Film Depicting Child Sex Abuse Images Scandal

Disgraced BBC News anchor Huw Edwards, who in 2024 was convicted of accessing child sex abuse images, has issued a furious statement over a new film depicting the scandal. Wuthering Heights star Martin Clunes portrays Edwards in 5’s Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards. It chronicles the “true story” of the ex-broadcaster’s grooming of a 17-year-old boy (named Ryan in drama, played by Osian Morgan) in the lead-up to his criminal conviction. The producers behind the film, airing in the U.K. on Tuesday, March 24, said at a London screening last week that they pored over reports, police files, and related paperwork, as well as speaking extensively with the victim, their family, and journalists at The Sun who first broke the news of Edwards’ grooming. A note at the end of the program — made to show the public “how grooming works and the insidiousness of grooming,” according to a 5 producer — states that the former BBC presenter declined to comment on the events depicted. On Monday, in a statement to the Daily Mail, Edwards condemned the producers …

‘There’s no way back for him’: Martin Clunes on playing Huw Edwards in a controversial new drama

‘There’s no way back for him’: Martin Clunes on playing Huw Edwards in a controversial new drama

Huw Edwards has not sat at a newsreader’s desk since July 2023, when he was suspended by the BBC following a report in the Sun that he had paid a teenager £35,000 for intimate images and conversations. A year later – when new BBC News at Ten anchor Clive Myrie announced that his predecessor had been convicted of possessing indecent images of children – the Welsh broadcaster’s career effectively ended. But on Tuesday the night of 24 March Edwards is back on screen, reading the news in the late-night slot he occupied for decades. He is played by the actor Martin Clunes and his BBC desk has been recreated in the London canalside news studio at Channel 5 by the producers of Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards. “I don’t know because I didn’t ask but I bet Michael Sheen was offered this,” says Clunes cheerfully in an interview room in the building. As Sheen is the market-leading actor-impersonator and also Welsh, this seems a good guess but the Channel 5 minder sitting in on …

A first-look image from the show, tentatively titled Power: The Downfall Of Huw Edwards, depicts the Doc Martin actor in character as Edwards, in a recreation of the BBC News studio. Martin Clunes in character as Huw Edwards in 5’s new drama In an official synopsis, 5 said their new drama would reflect on Edwards’ “double life as it spirals out of control, leading him to make the greatest announcement of his career – his total exit from public life following his conviction for serious child sexual offences”. 5 boss Ben Frow commented: “This is an important and shocking story – of how a man in a position of power and trust betrayed that …
