U.S. imposes sanctions on Chinese companies for buying Iranian oil

Hengli Petrochemical’s refining, petrochemical complex is seen at Changxing island in Dalian, Liaoning province, China July 16, 2018. Aizhu Chen | Reuters The Trump administration said on Friday it had imposed sanctions on an independent “teapot” refinery in China for buying billions of dollars’ worth of Iranian oil, as Washington and Tehran head into another round of peace talks over the weekend. The Treasury Department targeted Hengli Petrochemical (Dalian) Refinery, which it said is one of Iran’s largest customers of crude oil and petroleum products. The department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control said it also imposed sanctions on about 40 shipping companies and vessels that operate as part of Iran’s shadow fleet. China has said it opposes “illegal” unilateral sanctions. On Friday, its embassy in Washington said normal trade should not be harmed and called on Washington to stop “abusing” sanctions to target Chinese companies. “We call on the U.S. to stop politicizing trade and sci-tech issues and using them as a weapon and a tool and stop abusing various kinds of sanction to hit …

Iran Fires on Ships in Strait of Hormuz as Tehran Imposes Restrictions Again

Iran Fires on Ships in Strait of Hormuz as Tehran Imposes Restrictions Again

Confusion over the critical chokepoint threatened to deepen the energy crisis roiling the global economy and push the two countries toward renewed conflict, even as mediators expressed confidence a new deal was within reach. Iran’s joint military command said on Saturday that “control of the Strait of Hormuz has returned to its previous state … under strict management and control of the armed forces.” Two gunboats from Iran’s Revolutionary Guard opened fire on a tanker transiting the Strait of Hormuz, the British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center said. It reported the tanker and crew as safe, without identifying the vessel or its destination. TankerTrackers.com reported vessels were forced to turn around in the strait, including an Indian-flagged supertanker, after they were fired on by Iran. Saturday’s developments came after U.S. President Donald Trump said the blockade “will remain in full force” until Tehran reaches a deal with the U.S. that includes its nuclear program. Tehran had reopened the strait Friday to commercial vessels. Despite the escalation, Pakistani officials say the United States and …

Trump Imposes New Tariffs to Sidestep Supreme Court Ruling

Trump Imposes New Tariffs to Sidestep Supreme Court Ruling

President Trump is adding a new 10 percent tariff on nearly all imports to the United States, following a Supreme Court ruling that overturned most of the levies imposed by the US government last year. In an executive order signed Friday evening, Trump outlined a few exceptions, including imports of critical minerals, beef and fruits, cars, pharmaceuticals, and products from Canada or Mexico. The new tariffs will take effect on February 24, 2026. In a press conference Friday afternoon, Trump was fired up about the Supreme Court decision and resorted to personal attacks, calling the six justices who ruled against his trade policies “a disgrace to our nation.” Answering a reporter’s question about how two of the justices he nominated, Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett, voted for the overturn, Trump called them “an embarrassment to their families.” The new trade policy is based on Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, which allows the president to single-handedly and immediately charge tariffs of up to 15 percent if there are “large and serious” trade …

Mr Trump’s “reciprocal tariffs” were imposed on most of the world in April 2025 under an emergency powers law,. The tariffs were overturned by the US Supreme Court on Friday, February 21, dealing a major blow to the Trump administration’s economic policy. Friday’s decision, approved by a 6-3 majority, found that a 1977 law did not give Mr Trump the power to impose tariffs without the approval of the US Congress. Trump Imposes Secondary Tariffs, Reaching 25%, On Countries Still Importing From Iran

US and Iranian delegations conducted eight-hours of indirect negotiations mediated by the Omani government in Muscat on Friday, but it was merely minutes after the close of the talks that the US Department of State announced yet more sanctions on Iran. The punitive measures target 15 entities, two individuals and 14 vessels, charging them of being part of “the illicit trade in Iranian petroleum, petroleum products, and petrochemical products” – or the so-called shadow fleet. via The Export Practitioner  The Friday US statement signaled support for antigovernment protests which dominated headlines for much of the last month, but which have died down since. “Time and time again, the Iranian government has prioritized its destabilizing behavior over the safety and security of its own citizens, as demonstrated by the regime’s mass murder of peaceful protestors,” the State Dept. explained. But Tehran has pointed out not all of them were peaceful, given that dozens or even hundreds of police and security personnel were killed and wounded, in some cases by armed rioters who also torched buildings. The Iranian response to these new actions …

FTC Imposes 5-Year Ban On GM Disclosing Geolocation, Driver Data To Consumer Reporting Agencies

Authored by Naveen Athrappully via The Epoch Times, The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has finalized an order banning General Motors (GM) from disclosing consumers’ geolocation and driver behavior data to consumer reporting agencies for a period of five years, the agency said in a Jan. 14 statement. The FTC had filed a complaint against GM and its subsidiary OnStar LLC in January 2025. GM “collected, used, and sold drivers’ precise geolocation data and driving behavior information from millions of vehicles—data that can be used to set insurance rates—without adequately notifying consumers and obtaining their affirmative consent,” the agency said at the time. GM was encouraging customers to sign up for its OnStar connected vehicle service and the OnStar Smart Driver feature through a “misleading enrollment process,” the FTC said at the time. During enrollment, the company did not “clearly disclose” that collected information—including data regarding speeding, late-night driving, and instances of hard braking—would be sold to third parties such as consumer reporting agencies, the commission said. This information was used by reporting agencies to compile …

Trump imposes 25% tariff on imports of some advanced computing chips

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday (Jan 14) imposed a 25 per cent tariff on certain advanced computing chips, such as the Nvidia H200 AI processor and a similar semiconductor from AMD called the MI325X, according to a fact sheet released by the White House. The proclamation, which cited national security as a justification, is part of a ‍broader effort to create incentives for ‍chipmakers to produce more semiconductors in the US and decrease reliance on chip manufacturers in places like Taiwan. “The United States currently fully manufactures only approximately 10 per cent of the chips it requires, making it heavily reliant on ‍foreign supply chains. This dependence on foreign supply chains is a significant economic and national security risk,” the proclamation said. US President Donald Trump has deployed an array of tariffs aimed at bolstering American manufacturing, announcing in September sweeping new import tariffs, including 100 per cent duties on branded drugs and 25 per cent levies on heavy-duty trucks, triggering fresh trade uncertainty after ‌a period of relative calm. In April, the Trump …
