Arlo Parks, Ambiguous Desire review – Innocent yearnings for connection in the club

Get the inside track from Roisin O’Connor with our free weekly music newsletter Now Hear This Get our free music newsletter Now Hear This Get our free music newsletter Now Hear This As a sensitive, young artist best known for her poetic lyrics, shy-girl vocals and gentle indie-pop sounds, Arlo Parks didn’t seem to be on track for a Brat summer. But it turns out she’s been partying hard since the release of her second album, 2023’s My Soft Machine, and has flooded her third record, Ambiguous Desire, with house, techno and UK garage beats. Embedded in these songs are tales of strobe lights, DJ decks, gin, chips and hand-rolled cigarettes “in the guts of New York”. The tense, murky blur of bass and click-tap-rattle percussion contrasts powerfully with the sweetness of her voice, singing of her innocent yearning for connection. Born Anaïs Oluwatoyin Estelle Marinho in 2000, Parks felt like an outsider while growing up in west London. She once described a high-school experience of “feeling like that Black kid who couldn’t dance for …

When “I’m Trying to Be Good” Isn’t So Innocent

When “I’m Trying to Be Good” Isn’t So Innocent

“I’m being so bad today.” “I need to work this off later.” “I’m trying to be good.” These phrases are so embedded in everyday conversation that they often go unnoticed, showing up in break rooms, group chats, family dinners, and even healthcare settings. They can sound harmless, even relatable, offering a shared way to talk about food and bodies in a culture that rarely questions the assumptions underneath them. What Diet Talk Reinforces Diet talk is not neutral. It reflects and reinforces a broader belief system in which bodies are meant to be controlled, weight is treated as a proxy for worth, and eating becomes something to manage rather than experience. When food is labeled as “good” or “bad,” it subtly moralizes nourishment, and when people talk about needing to “earn” or “burn off” what they eat, movement becomes framed as punishment rather than care. Comments about weight loss, even when intended as compliments, can reinforce the idea that smaller is inherently better, as well as the broader assumptions that weight reflects health, discipline, and …

AI Mistake Throws Innocent Grandmother in Jail for Nearly Six Months

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech An AI system’s little oopsie, and a police department’s staggering incompetence, landed an innocent grandma in jail. Harrowing reporting by North Dakota radio station WDAY details how the 50-year-old Angela Lipps spent nearly six months in the clink after Fargo cops using an AI facial recognition tool flagged her as a suspect in a bank fraud case in the state. The mother of three — and grandmother of five — says she’s lived her entire life in north-central Tennessee, roughly a thousand miles away from where the crimes she was accused of committing took place. US marshals showed up at her doorstep last July while she was babysitting four kids and arrested her at gunpoint. First, Lipps was booked in a Tennessee county jail as a fugitive from justice from North Dakota. And because she was considered a fugitive, she was held without bail and sat in the jail for nearly four initial months. Lipps received a court-appointed …

Ahmed, 21; his brother Armaan Ahmed, 27; and Adam Mohammed, 30; had all previously denied murdering Abdullah. Prosecutors said the defendants, all of Darnall, were out looking for Mr Divers over a dispute about e-bikes. Zulkernain Ahmed used the car as a “weapon” as he targeted Mr …

Minnesota man admits killing and dismembering pregnant sister because she was ‘no longer innocent’

A Minnesota man who decided his pregnant sister was “no longer innocent” has admitted to killing her, dismembering her body and leaving pieces of her remains in multiple locations, authorities said. Jack Joseph Ball, 24, pleaded guilty last week to the murders of 30-year-old sister Bethany Ann Israel and her unborn baby, according to the Dakota County Attorney’s Office. Israel, who was married to Josh Israel, was killed on May 23, 2024. According to court documents, she had gone to her brother’s Lakeville home around 6 p.m. to have dinner with him. Several hours later, family members grew concerned when they had not heard from her. At about 11 p.m., their mother drove to the home to check on her daughter. When she arrived, she saw Ball “tear out of the house,” prosecutors said. When she went inside Ball’s home, she discovered a large amount of blood and called 911. Officers from the Lakeville Police Department found a “bloody saw, hatchet, and large, bloody knives” and “several dismembered body parts” inside the home, according to …

A police pursuit that started in Anaheim on Wednesday night ended with the suspect’s vehicle colliding with another car, killing the driver, officials said. The suspect, identified Thursday as 21-year-old Darvin Felipe Bahamon Martinez, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of felony evading police and vehicular manslaughter, according to the Placentia Police Department. The victim was identified only as a Placentia man in his 60s, according to Anaheim Police Sgt. Eric Anderson. Anaheim police then used emergency lights and a siren to attempt to perform a second enforcement stop as the driver fled into the neighboring city of Placentia. Not Such An Innocent Girl By Victoria Beckham Is Having An Unexpected Resurgence

Not Such An Innocent Girl By Victoria Beckham Is Having An Unexpected Resurgence

The recent scandal surrounding her family has had an unexpected knock-on effect for Victoria Beckham’s solo career. Speculation about a supposed family feud has been surrounding the Beckham family for months now, with Sir David and Victoria Beckham’s eldest son Brooklyn Peltz Beckham breaking his silence on the matter in a series of explosive Instagram posts earlier this week. In his posts, Brooklyn accused his parents of both “performative” and “controlling” behaviour, while also specifically claiming that his mother “hijacked” the first dance on his wedding day, leaving him “uncomfortable” and “humiliated” with her “inappropriate” moves. HuffPost UK contacted representatives for both Sir David and Victoria Beckham earlier this week for comment in light of Brooklyn’s posts, but did not receive a response. Over the last few days, the conversation surrounding the family has showed no sign of slowing down, with some fans of the former Spice Girls singer taking the opportunity to shine a light on one of her oft-overlooked pop culture contributions… What’s the Victoria Beckham Not Such An Innocent Girl campaign all …

Tech Giants Pushing AI Into Schools Is a Huge, Ethically Bankrupt Experiment on Innocent Children That Will Likely End in Disaster

Tech Giants Pushing AI Into Schools Is a Huge, Ethically Bankrupt Experiment on Innocent Children That Will Likely End in Disaster

Tom Werner / Getty Images The tech industry is making sure kids will be hooked on AI for generations — by proactively sinking its tendrils deep into the education system, long before we understand the effects of the tech on young minds. Top leaders in the space, from Microsoft to OpenAI, are pouring millions of dollars into schools, colleges, and universities, often providing students with access to their AI products. The justification, touted in a fresh New York Times piece by both by tech companies and the educators receiving the funding, is that the tools will accelerate learning and prepare students for a world driven by AI. But the reality outside of this hype is a lot murkier and darker. Some research suggests that AI actually inhibits learning, with one notable study conducted by researchers from Microsoft and Carnegie Mellon finding that it atrophies critical thinking skills. Even more urgently, the safety of AI chatbots is looking more dubious by the day, as significant media and clinical attention is being paid toward the phenomenon of so-called …

6 “innocent” Windows settings that are actually spying on you (and how to stop them)

6 “innocent” Windows settings that are actually spying on you (and how to stop them)

Windows does a great job of looking user-friendly and helpful. You would notice that almost every setting that involves your data is wrapped in innocent and friendly language, like personalization and improving your experience. Once you’ve clicked Yes during the setup, your PC quietly keeps more tabs than you would ever want to share. I don’t mean to say that there’s a hidden plot or wild conspiracy going against us. It’s just that a lot of data-collecting features are enabled by default on Windows, some of which are buried in such a way that you would rarely revisit them. I’ve disabled six Windows settings that looked innocent but behave like silent background observers. Activity Tracking Windows memory of you no attribution required — screenshot by Fahad Khawaja Windows can keep a history of apps you use, files you open, websites you browse, and other general activity over time. It can store this data locally or send it to Microsoft servers if you’ve enabled the syncing feature. Activity tracking helps you pick up where you’ve left …
