Jihadis intensify attacks against Nigeria’s military, killing officers and carting away weapons

ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — Jihadi extremist groups, including Boko Haram and one of its factions, have been blamed for intensified attacks targeting Nigeria’s military bases in the northeast of the country in the last week. At least two officers and several soldiers have been killed in the attacks, which analysts say shows a remarkable level of coordination. Over the weekend, Islamic extremists launched at least six attacks in Borno and Yobe states and in the wider Lake Chad region, spiriting away trucks and military hardware from the bases, according to security analysts and security reports. The Nigerian military said in a statement that the latest attacks between Sunday and Monday were an “attempt by the terrorists to overwhelm troop positions.” Military spokesman Sani Uba said late Monday that the troops lost an unspecified number of soldiers and a military officer, without providing further details. It adds to a death toll of several soldiers and at least one officer in the past week. Security analysts estimate at least four military officers have been killed in that …

‘Catastrophic’: Humanitarian emergency unfolding in Lebanon as Israeli airstrikes intensify

Haxi Meyers-Belkin is pleased to welcome Kevin Charbel, Head of Première Urgence Internationale mission in Lebanon. From his vantage point, the current airstrikes in southern Lebanon are triggering a new humanitarian emergency exacerbating the prolonged national crisis. The new attacks are once again plunging Lebanon into a state of war: significant civilian casualties and the displacement of tens of thousands of people, many of whom had only recently returned to their homes following the November 2024 ceasefire. “Incredibly distressing”: European resignations, investigations intensify over Epstein files

The release of the latest batch of Epstein files has set off a wave of high-profile resignations and criminal investigations across Europe, even as Trump administration officials resist calls for greater scrutiny. In the United Kingdom, former U.S. ambassador Peter Mandelson resigned from his position in the House of Lords and the Labour Party after recently released documents detailed his close relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Mandelson “lied repeatedly” to officials about his ties to Epstein, adding mgr he had “betrayed our country, our Parliament and my party.” “I regret appointing him,” Starmer told the House of Commons on Wednesday. “If I knew then what I know now, he would never have been anywhere near government.” Miroslav Lajčák resigned from his role on Saturday after messages between the Slovakian national security adviser and Epstein were made public. In the messages, he and Epstein discuss women, with Lajčák telling Epstein he would “take the ‘MI’ girl.” Lajčák said he felt like a “fool” after the release of the message. “It was a …

In Minneapolis, Vintage Dealers Build Mutual-Aid Networks as ICE Raids Intensify

That organizing began as “block clubs”—text message chains and emergency phone trees, created during the pandemic. Since then, they have evolved to encrypted Signal groups, where residents carefully vet any new members and coordinate specialized roles for emergency response: drivers who shuttle people to work or school, grocery shoppers, delivery volunteers, fundraisers, and neighborhood patrols. Witte’s neighborhood has created this division of labor, which is designed to keep people safe while meeting community needs. “People have chosen the thing that they’re best suited to be doing in Minneapolis,” she explained. “We’re trying not to cross streams”—meaning those providing rides, for example, can’t also be the most visible protesters, as that could endanger people they’re protecting. But no matter the role, whistles have become ubiquitous. “Everyone and their mom has a whistle,” Witte said. She hears them constantly—multiple times daily, she estimates—mixing with the sound of helicopter blades overhead. Following whistle bleats, community members emerge from their homes at a moment’s notice to respond like watch-dogs. Rapid responders say that if the agents know bystanders are …

Minnesota timeline: Resistance grows and ICE operations intensify

Minnesota timeline: Resistance grows and ICE operations intensify

Minnesota has been subjected to a devastating series of ICE raids in the last two months, which have left two US citizens dead and seen countless more injured, detained, or deported. Seen by some as Donald Trump’s personal army, the federal US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency has terrorised neighbourhoods in a quest to allegedly rid the city of undocumented migrants and ‘combat fraud’ in an operation called ‘Metro Surge’. They’ve torn apart families and filled the city with fear in what some suspect is a broader initiative to divide the city and gain access to private voting data. At least 3,000 people have been arrested, yet just hundreds of names have been released, prompting concerns about what’s happening to those in custody. Many of those detained have no criminal record. Among those detained was a five-year-old boy in a blue bunny hat, whose picture went viral for highlighting the brutality and ridicule of Trump’s strategy. Considered a haven for many, the twin cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul have fought back against the federally …

Keir Starmer Calls For Labour To Intensify Green Party Criticism

Keir Starmer Calls For Labour To Intensify Green Party Criticism

Labour is to ramp up its attacks on the Greens amid growing alarm in Downing Street at the rise in support for Zack Polanski’s party. HuffPost UK can reveal that the prime minister has told No.10 allies in recent weeks that they need to start training their fire on the Greens’ “extreme” policies as crunch elections loom in May. It comes as polling shows Labour is losing more votes to parties on the left of British politics than they are to Reform UK. The Greens have enjoyed a surge in popularity since Polanski was elected leader last September. But the PM believes the public remains largely unaware of the party leader’s opposition to the UK’s membership of Nato or his support for giving up the country’s nuclear weapons. At prime minister’s questions on Wednesday, Starmer accused the Greens of being “high on heroin, soft on Putin” – a reference to the party’s policy on legalising drugs. Labour is also expected to target the Greens’ record on anti-semitism after deputy leader Mothin Ali was criticised over …
