Daisy Johnson: ‘I wasn’t a fan of David Szalay, but Flesh is a masterpiece’ | Books

My earliest reading memoryMemories from my childhood are opening up as I read to my own young children at the moment. Something in the pictures of Helen Cooper’s The Bear Under the Stairs or Lane Smith’s The Big Pets takes me back to being four years old and being read to. My favourite book growing upI love the Sabriel series by Garth Nix and first read it alongside my father and, later, my younger brother. It was truly a shared joy to be immersed in that world, for a book to give us a new connection to one another. The book that changed me as a teenagerI don’t remember what age I was when I found The Bone People by Keri Hulme on my parents’ bookshelf, probably too young. I was a swirling hurricane of a teenager and reading about Kerewin alone in her tower felt momentous. There was something about the way that the anger and fear in the book bury into the writing. The writer who changed my mindI think my mind is being changed by writing all of the time, but most …

Dakota Fanning and Jake Johnson on Their New “Punk Rock” Pic at SXSW

Dakota Fanning and Jake Johnson on Their New “Punk Rock” Pic at SXSW

When Jake Johnson and longtime collaborator Joe Swanberg decided to embark on another film together, they knew one thing right away: They did not want to do it in Chicago. “We wanted it to feel different and like we were growing up,” says Johnson, who first starred in Swanberg’s Windy City-set Drinking Buddies in 2013. The result is The Sun Never Sets, an Anchorage, Alaska, dramedy about a woman caught between her divorced-with-children boyfriend (Johnson) and an ex (Cory Michael Smith) who recently moved back to town. They eventually tapped Dakota Fanning for the lead role in what Johnson describes as Swanberg’s “most mature movie yet.” The two stars talk with THR about their new project, which will premiere as a sales title (UTA) at SXSW. What was the first conversation about this movie like? JAKE JOHNSON Joe called me up and said he had an idea based off his real life that could work for a movie. We started fleshing it out, and then my agent at UTA suggested Dakota, and we both freaked …

Mike Johnson says Rep. Andy Ogles’ anti-Muslim remarks reflect ‘popular sentiment’

Mike Johnson says Rep. Andy Ogles’ anti-Muslim remarks reflect ‘popular sentiment’

(RNS) — A day after Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., said on social media that Muslims don’t belong in America, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said that although he questioned Ogles’ choice of words, he pointed to a widely shared sentiment among Americans. “Muslims don’t belong in American Society. Pluralism is a lie,” Ogles posted on his X account on Monday (March 9). Johnson told reporters at a congressional retreat in Doral, Florida, on Tuesday that he spoke about Ogles’ remarks with members of Congress and discussed what language they should use on the issue. Ogles’ selection of words, he said, is “a different language than I would use.” Still, Johnson said he believes his comments resonated with many Americans who view Islam as incompatible with American culture. “There’s a lot of energy in the country and a lot of popular sentiment that the demand to impose Shariah law in America is a serious problem,” Johnson said. “I think that’s a serious issue. Shariah law and the imposition of Shariah law is contrary to the U.S. …

Boris Johnson reveals Andrew ‘wanted to knock down 1 of London’s most famous buildings’ | Royal | News

In his new column for the Daily Mail, the former Prime Minister, who was also Mayor of London between 2008 and 2016, spoke about their first “bizarre” meeting together at Buckingham Palace. He claimed Andrew wanted to “knock down” one of London’s most famous buildings – Battersea Power Station. The iconic Grade II* listed building is located on the south bank of the River Thames. According to Mr Johnson, Andrew wanted to make London “even more attractive”. He wrote: “The Prince was then the government’s official trade envoy. So, we did. We went off to tea at Buckingham Palace, and it was all a bit bizarre. “The Duke of York had a series of ideas, perhaps gleaned from some of his international contacts, about how we could make London even more attractive to the world’s billionaire investors. Bear in mind that this was back in the good old days, before Starmer’s Pol Pot war on wealth creators. London at the time had more billionaires than any other city in the world. “But the Duke thought …

Lucky Winner Mike Johnson Gets Dream Trip to State of the Union

Lucky Winner Mike Johnson Gets Dream Trip to State of the Union

What a lucky man Mike Johnson was! Through no merit of his own, but some wonderful act of Providence, he got to sit in one of two Big Chairs behind the president in a nice room full of wood paneling while the president delivered the State of the Union address! The State of the Union was a special Trump rally held, in accordance with tradition, on the floor of the House of Representatives. Being there was a real treat for Mike. The president was chief executive. This meant that he was in charge of the government and got to determine important things, like whether laws were constitutional (despite what nine robed traitors, “an embarrassment to their families,” had to say) and what the country’s budget was (impossible to imagine the wise Founders delegating that sort of thing to 435 individuals). Mr. Trump got to put his name and face on buildings and coins and soon, if the country was lucky, would be worshipped as a household deity. It would have reminded Mike of Julius Caesar, …
