Joni Lamb, Daystar TV ministry co-founder, dies at 65

(RNS) — Joni Lamb, the co-founder of Daystar Television Network, a prominent Christian television ministry, died Thursday (May 7). She was 65. “Joni’s love for the Lord and for the people we serve shaped this ministry from the beginning,” the Daystar board of directors said in a statement. “We grieve her loss. We are grateful for the legacy of faith she leaves behind.” Last month, Doug Weiss, Lamb’s husband, announced that Lamb had suffered a back injury and would be off the air for a while. “Prior to her recent back injury, Lamb had been dealing with serious health matters that she chose to face head-on and in private,” said the statement from Daystar about Lamb’s passing. “The back injury compounded these challenges and led to a more serious medical situation than anyone had anticipated. Despite the dedicated efforts of her medical team and the prayers of so many around the world, her condition worsened in the last days.” Lamb founded Daystar in 1993 with her first husband, Marcus Lamb. Joni Mitchell Calls Mark Carney a Blessing

Legendary folk singer and songwriter Joni Mitchell made a rare public appearance in Canada at the Juno Awards on Sunday night, where she received a lifetime achievement award. Canadian-born Mitchell appeared on stage at her country’s music awards alongside the country’s prime minister, Mark Carney, whom she praised. “I’m so glad to be back in Canada. This man is a blessing. You guys are so fortunate,” she added in tribute to Carney while he was at her side on stage in Hamilton, Ontario. Mitchell, who lives in Los Angeles, added in a note of contrast: “I’m living in the States and you know what’s happening there.” The legendary musician while on stage also recalled a decade earlier when she “had a (brain) aneurysm, which changed my life. Oddly, for the better. I went into a coma, which helped me to quit smoking. And my house filled up with the most wonderful nurses. I was, on the road with men for years and years; now I live with a house full of women. So my life …

James Mangold’s Oscar-winning Johnny Cash film – following on the heels of Ray, Taylor Hackford’s similarly awards-garlanded take on Ray Charles a year earlier – established the music biopic blueprint so definitively that the form immediately ossified into cliché. Troubled childhood, early brilliance, meteoric ascent, drugs and adversity, redemptive finale. By the time Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story came along to skewer the whole charade in 2007, the parody practically wrote itself. Fast-forward 20 years, past the vapidly formulaic Bohemian Rhapsody, and we’re still being served the same meal with different garnishes. A Complete Unknown and Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere – biopics of Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen respectively – both arrived …

Olivia Dean, Joni Mitchell, Sombr, and More Light Up Clive Davis’s Pre-Grammy Celebration

“It’s a special night,” Frankie Valli said as guests waited in line to get into the Beverly Hilton ballroom. He wasn’t lying. Clive Davis’ Annual Pre-Grammy celebration is special—and long. The evening began about an hour late, as it took forever to get the legion of stars to take their seats and serve dinner. But it also started with a bang, with Gayle King introducing a video from former president Barack Obama. “Clive is a force of nature,” Obama said of the evening’s host. “He knew that great music can come from anywhere and be enjoyed by audiences everywhere. All it needs is a champion. At a time when Black artists struggled to find distribution, Clive signed Gamble and Huff, helping bring the sound of Philadelphia to the world and inspiring thousands of Black artists.” Davis presided over the event both figuratively and physically, sitting at a table on the stage. Between each performance, he talked about the icons in the room. At 91, he knows every legend in music; he also had a teleprompter …
