Politics Home | Andy Burnham Will Be Labour Leader “In The Not Too Distant Future”, Predicts Karl Turner MP

Keir Starrmer appeared alomgside Andy Burnham in a rare show of unity at a campaign event this week (Alamy) 4 min read3 hr An MP who recently lost the Labour whip has said that Keir Starmer’s leadership is “now beyond the point of no return” and that he expects Andy Burnham to take over soon. Karl Turner, the MP for Kingston upon Hull East, said the Greater Manchester mayor is “authentic” and “what the punters need”, adding that people in his Yorkshire constituency and nationwide “don’t think Keir Starmer believes in anything”. Turner was speaking to The Rundown podcast from PoliticsHome on Thursday, before new revelations about Lord Mandelson’s appointment as UK ambassador to the US put further pressure on Starmer’s position. The Guardian reported that Mandelson was given the senior diplomatic job despite failing his security vetting. Starmer has blamed Foreign Office officials for not making him aware of the vetting failure, and last night sacked Olly Robbins as the department’s permanent secretary. Labour suspended the whip from Turner last month after weeks of …

Politics Home Article | Labour Suspends Outspoken MP Karl Turner

(Alamy) 2 min read42 min Karl Turner MP has had the Labour whip suspended after a series of strong public criticisms of No 10 and government policy.  Turner has been particularly vocal in his opposition to jury trial reforms, but has also publicly criticised the Keir Starmer operation. PoliticsHome understands that the suspension did not relate to a specific incident and was in response to a pattern of behaviour towards colleagues. Some Labour MPs were unhappy with an interview that the Hull East MP gave to campaigner Jody McIntyre, who stood against Labour MP Jess Phillips at the last general election. Turner claimed that he had not been made aware that he had had the whip suspended before it was reported by the media. Writing on X on Tuesday afternoon after the suspension was confirmed to PoliticsHome, he said: “I am being told that I have had the whip suspended but I have not had any notification from the whips about this. It seems journalists have been told but I have not.” Turner, who was first elected in 2010, wrote …

A Free Course on Karl Marx’s Capital, Volume 1 from Yale University

A Free Course on Karl Marx’s Capital, Volume 1 from Yale University

From Yale professor Paul North comes a chapter-by-chapter study of Karl Marx’s Capital: Critique of Political Economy, Volume 1. According to the description that accompanies the course on YouTube, this “book from 1872 is still the best guide to the predatory economic and social system within which we live. The book solves five basic mysteries in our social world. The mysteries are: why social classes struggle against one another, why human beings are in the thrall of things, how a quantity of money turns into more money without seeming to add anything, why some people are forced to work and the more they work the less they make proportional to their effort, and finally, and why it is so hard to transform the system for the better.” You can watch the 19 lectures from the course in the playlist above. Prof. North is the co-editor of the new English translation and critical edition of Capital Volume 1, and it’s the text used in the course. The German designer, perhaps best known for shaping the Chanel legacy after joining the French fashion house in 1983, died aged 85 on 19 February 2019. Seven years later, a legal dispute has emerged that could see some of his estate go to his nieces and nephews, who are his only living relatives. The Times cites German media as reporting that Lagerfeld’s will, which was finalised in April 2016, bequeathed most of his estate to his long-time assistant Sébastien Jondeau, his godson Hudson Kroenig, and models …

Karl Rove: Americans Are ‘Tiring’ Of Donald Trump’s Antics

Veteran Republican strategist Karl Rove worries President Donald Trump is tied to a losing strategy right now, but thinks it’s possible for him to sway public opinion in his direction before the 2026 midterm elections. In an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal published on Monday, Rove wrote that, “There are signs that the public is tiring of his hyperbole and insatiable desire for retribution. Increasingly, they may hear only the offensive or cruel things he says.” “Has the president convinced himself that he doesn’t need to sell his policies and actions?” he asked. “It appears that he believes he can will people into agreeing with him by claiming his achievements are the biggest, best and most amazing in American history.” Republican strategist Karl Rove, here at the 2024 Atlantic Festival that September, shared his thoughts on President Donald Trump’s midterm election challenges in an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal published Monday.
