POLL: Would Angela Rayner make a better PM than Keir Starmer? | Politics | News

Speaking at an event by campaign group Mainstream last night, Ms Rayner said Labour had come to be seen to represent “the Establishment, not working people”. She said: “As a party, and as a movement, we cannot hide, we cannot just go through the motions in the face of decline. There’s no safe ground and we’re running out of time. “The change that people wanted so desperately needs to be seen, it needs to be felt, and we have to show that it is a Labour government that will deliver it.” The Ashton-under-Lyne MP also took aim at Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood’s immigration reforms. She warned that changes to indefinite leave to remain for people already living in Britain would be a “breach of trust”. She said: “Many people came here to Britain – on the understanding that if they worked in the sectors where we needed them, obeyed the law and paid their taxes, they could stay. “If we suddenly change that, it pulls the rug from under those who have planned their lives …

Keir Starmer is finished – and this arch nemesis has dealt him a devastating blow | Politics | News

The Peter Mandelson scandal has not only buried his own political career, but it could also end Keir Starmer’s, too. It is staggering that the Prime Minister appointed a man with a track record of political scandals as US ambassador, despite knowing that he was matey with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein. In times of crisis, you need friends. Sir Keir has very few. Certainly not on the Labour back benches. That was evidently clear in PMQs as the ashen-faced Labour leader fumbled with his papers and garbled on aimlessly. Never before have I seen a Prime Minister so ineffectual. He had no fight in him. His leadership is now on life support and it was somewhat eyebrow-raising that Angela Rayner appeared to spearhead a backbench revolt over the Mandelson files. While the PM was crumbling in the Commons another potential Labour leader, Shabana Mahmood, contradicted him by admitting Brexit is not to blame for the Channel migrant crisis. Labour MPs, from all wings of the party, are also increasingly voicing privately that Sir Keir’s demise …

Angela Rayner drops huge hint at comeback bid – ‘not dead yet!’ | Politics | News

Angela Rayner has hinted at a comeback to frontline politics as she insisted she is “not dead yet”. The former deputy prime minister also reportedly said that Labour’s leadership should “do better”. Ms Rayner, who quit as deputy PM and housing secretary in a row over her tax affairs, made the remarks at a private fundraising dinner last week. Her comments come as Sir Keir Starmer is facing intense speculation over his future ahead of the May elections which are expected to be a bloodbath for Labour. According to the Times, Ms Rayner said Labour “should be humble enough to accept when we’ve made mistakes”. She added: “We should do better, and we should do more.” The former Cabinet minister said she wanted to help Labour fight Nigel Farage’s Reform UK. And in a sign she hopes to return to frontline politics, she added: “And I’m still fighting. I’m not dead yet.” Some 80 MPs are prepared to back Ms Rayner in a leadership contest, should one occur after May’s elections, her allies told the …

Lee Anderson savagely predicts date ‘dead man walking’ Starmer will be ousted | Politics | News

Lee Anderson branded Sir Keir Starmer a “dead man walking” as he predicted he will be ousted in May. The Reform UK MP’s comments come as YouGov polling shows the Labour Government’s net popularity rating stands at minus 59. The Prime Minister has been facing open questions over his leadership ahead of the May elections. Speaking on GB News, Mr Anderson said: “I can’t see anybody replacing him to be honest. “At one time it was mooted about Angela Rayner replacing him. She’s sort of gone missing. “Wes Streeting is sort of slithering about in the background, he could be ready to launch the old dagger in the back. “I’m surprised you said he had a popularity rating of 11%. I’m surprised it’s as high as that because everywhere you go in this country, as a politician, people talk to me wherever I go, and this man is despised. I think he’s the most despised Prime Minister in history. “I think he’s cowardly, he U-turns on everything, he bends to his backbenchers all the time …
