‘A Knight of Seven Kingdoms’ Actress Got Negative Comments About Her Race

Fandom reaction to HBO‘s debut season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has been nearly universally positive. But there’s one ugly element of the show’s praise that’s largely flown under the radar. Late in the six-episode-season’s run, a narrative began to take hold on social media that the show was doing well because it was “non-woke” compared to certain other recent fantasy and sci-fi shows because it centers on two white male characters, Dunk and Egg (played by Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell), both of whom are portrayed in a very positive and heroic light. One part of the show that didn’t align with this viewpoint was the casting of Tanzyn Crawford as Tanselle, a traveling performer from Dorne who charms Dunk, and some on social media have griped about the actress being in the show. Talking to Wonderland magazine, the Australian actress addressed the issue for the first time. “It was intimidating to step into something that people are so connected to, love so much and have a lot of opinions about,” …

“A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is the “Undercover Boss” of our era

“A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is the “Undercover Boss” of our era

The longest-running fantasy on TV sunnily depicts the American commoner’s relationship with the ruling class, and vice versa. It also airs on CBS. “Undercover Boss” premiered during the Great Recession, when the wage gap had yawned into a canyon. Layoffs and waves of foreclosures became the norm while the same financial institutions received government bailouts, ensuring their leadership maintained their bonuses. All told, it was a terrible look for this country’s corporate rulers. Enter this cheerful work of capitalist propaganda. Over its 11 seasons, an assortment of C-suite lords and ladies have infiltrated the ranks of their lowest-rung laborers to appreciate how hard they grind for their bread. Alarmed at the realness of their struggle, they toss their smallfolk a cash bump, a modest promotion, or maybe, if they’re really lucky, a nicer place to urinate. Rarely if ever do these minimum wage safaris net lasting structural change at the companies featured on the show. But if a person is fortunate enough to be chosen by a producer to be shadowed by their boss, they …

‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Went Full ‘Battle of the Bastards’ (and Then Some) This Week

‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Went Full ‘Battle of the Bastards’ (and Then Some) This Week

This story contains spoilers for the latest episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, “In the Name of the Mother.” Amid the slew of so-so spin-offs and sequels inevitably wrung out of mega-franchises in our current media era, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has been a breath of fresh air because it doesn’t just feel like another Game of Thrones retread. Sure, it’s still set in Westeros, and all of the familiar trappings are there—it’s light-hearted, but not without grime and grit, nor those more visceral moments that call back to Thrones at its gnarliest—but the stakes are comparably lower, and the scale more human. (To put it bluntly: there’s no looming existential threat in the form of a frozen zombie army, nor dragons ready to go nuclear on the denizens of King’s Landing.) Sure, it’s fun to have what is essentially a buddy comedy set in the Thrones universe, but it’s the human-level perspective that has really made it stand out. And so we come to “In the Name of the Mother,” …

Small Prophets and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms share one lovely trait

Small Prophets and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms share one lovely trait

On the face of it, similarities between Small Prophets and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms are few and far between. Mackenzie Crook’s BBC Two series is a modern day, suburban-set sitcom about a man growing homunculi (miniature humanoid creatures with the ability to predict the future) in his garden shed. The Game of Thrones spin-off, in stark contrast, is set in 209 AC (roughly a century before the first season of Thrones) in the greens of Ashford, where a lowly hedge knight crosses paths with a young boy concealing his noble dynasty. No, there aren’t many comparisons to speak of, aside from some well-deployed tonal acrobatics, a handful of quirky characters and a touch of the absurd. But they do have one notable thing in common, and it warms the cockles of one’s heart in these most divided of times: their celebration of unexpected friendships. In both series, we find two people – Michael Sleep and Ser Duncan the Tall, also known as Dunk – who are, when we first meet them incredibly lonely. …

‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Is the Prettiest Show on TV

The first shot in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms—the new, shorter, lighter spin-off from the Game of Thrones universe—is of three horses. Standing in the rain in front of a grassy hill bisected by a muddy track, one horse faces directly toward the camera, one a little out toward the viewer’s right (around 45 degrees) and one almost perpendicular to the first horse. It’s a well-composed shot that looks like a painting. The second shot is much wider—the hill the horses are standing on is now on our left, with the horses revealed to be underneath a wizened tree toward the top of it, and on the right there’s a distant mountain, whose slope mirrors that of the closer hill, so that the bottom of each meet in the middle of the screen. At the bottom of the closer hill, under a marbled sky, a large figure digs. After a few shovelfuls, he trudges up the hill, lifts a body from the ground beside the horses, and turns to carry it back down to …
