From forbidden gay love to kinky queer romance: The latest film releases – arts24

In this edition of our film show, critic Emma Jones talks to Eve Jackson about the latest film releases, including “The History of Sound” from director Oliver Hermanus. It stars Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor as two men who fall in love in the shadow of World War I. The film premiered in competition at Cannes to lukewarm reviews, but Emma argues its quiet, repressed portrayal of a gay relationship shaped by its era is exactly what gives it emotional force. Comparisons to “Brokeback Mountain” have reignited debate about how rarely Hollywood tells nuanced love stories between men, and we hear from Mescal and Hermanus about why they were drawn to this tender tale of longing. A very different kind of queer love story unfolds in “Pillion”, the striking debut from Harry Lighton. Starring Alexander Skarsgård and Harry Melling – familiar to many from the Harry Potter films – the film explores a provocative yet unexpectedly tender BDSM relationship set in suburban South London. We also review Bradley Cooper’s latest drama “Is This Thing On?”, about …

Dan, 44 We have a cup of tea and a chat with the receptionist then go on to a leather-clad room Twenty years ago, a woman sat opposite me on a train and quoted the first line of the book I was reading to me. We talked and talked – about books, architecture, family, relationships – and haven’t stopped since. I assumed I’d never see her again, but she gave me her number and after texting furiously for a week she invited me to stay with her, and our instant intellectual connection became an intense physical one. We didn’t get out of bed for three days. I practically moved in that weekend and never left. We had three kids in four years. It was intense. Making space for sex has become harder as they’ve got older. But we’re a team, so we always find solutions. And in the past year, we’ve started renting a room in a local sex dungeon for a few hours every couple of months. It relaxes us to know there’s not …

Olivia Wilde, Cooper Hoffman Get Dangerously Kinky

Olivia Wilde, Cooper Hoffman Get Dangerously Kinky

When Olivia Wilde first read the script for I Want Your Sex, co-written by Karley Sciortino, she had exactly the reaction that any fan of the provocative filmmaker Gregg Araki would hope for: “[I] laughed so hard, just cackling away on my couch, sending them both voice notes about how much I fucking loved it,” the 41-year-old star says, “and said, ‘Yes of course I need to play this insane character, as long as we find the best actor of all time to play Elliot.’”  This would be Araki’s first film in over a decade. Wilde would play Erika Tracy, a boundary-pushing artist in contemporary Los Angeles. She would need to act opposite a fearless younger actor portraying Elliot, Erika’s new intern — oh, and sadomasochistic sexual muse.  Wilde suggested the 22-year-old Cooper Hoffman, a rising star (and son of the late, great Philip Seymour Hoffman) who’s not exactly known for risqué fare. “I’m all, ‘Cooper Hoffman? You mean the kid from Licorice Pizza? That’s so creepy and weird. He’s like a baby!’” Araki says …
