American AI startup Poolside launches free, high-performing open model Laguna XS.2 for local agentic coding

The AI race lately has felt a bit like a game of tennis: first, Anthropic releases a new, pricey state-of-the-art proprietary model for general users (Claude Opus 4.7), then, a week or so later, its rival OpenAI volleys back with one of its own (GPT-5.5). And all the while, Chinese companies like DeepSeek and even Xiaomi are seeking to appeal to users by playing a different game: nearing the frontier, but with open licensing and far lower costs. So it’s a big surprise when a new, affordable, highly performant open source contender from the U.S. emerges. Today, we got one from the smaller, lesser-known U.S. AI startup, Poolside, founded in San Francisco in 2023. The company launched its two new Laguna large language models, both of which offer affordable intelligence optimized for agentic workflows (AI that does more than just chat or generate content, but can, in this case, write code, use third-party tools, and take actions autonomously), as well as a new coding agent harness called (fittingly) “pool” and a new web-based, mobile optimized …

MTV’s reality show followed the lives of several high school seniors, including Lauren Conrad and Kristin Cavallari. The first show of its kind, Laguna Beach laid the groundwork for MTV’s wildly popular spin-off series, The Hills. The special, released Friday on The Roku Channel, reunited Conrad and Cavallari along with their castmates Stephen Colletti, Lo Bosworth, Talan Torriero, Trey Phillips, Christina Shuller, Dieter Schmitz, Jessica Smith, Morgan Smith and Alex Hooser. Fans were instantly brought back to the mid-2000s from the moments the show’s theme song, “Come Clean” by Hilary Duff, began to play, with one writing on X, “i just got to the credits of the laguna beach reunion and i’m already crying.” “Watching the Laguna Beach reunion has me so …

The Laguna Beach Cast Goes Back, Back to the Beginning

The Laguna Beach Cast Goes Back, Back to the Beginning

When I mentioned to Cavallari that I had attended the New York stop of her live podcast tour last year, her insistence that it was her worst appearance of that run was more clinical than self-deprecating. She also thought, to my considerable surprise, that Laguna Beach was boring, crediting its success to its timing, editing, music, and scenery. “Of course, now we’re living in this TikTok, social media world and everything is so fast-paced,” she said. “But really, when you break it down, a whole lot didn’t happen.” Like Conrad, though, Cavallari is cognizant of the show’s role in her current career as the proprietor of a business tied to her name and image. Uncommon James, her jewelry and skin-care company, relaunched her signature black choker from her Laguna Beach days in commemoration of the reunion. Plus, she didn’t mind having a chance to set the record straight about Cabo. “I thought I handled it exceptionally well for being an intoxicated 17-year-old with her ex-boyfriend yelling in her face,” Cavallari said. “And so I stand …

17 splendid things to do in Laguna Beach

17 splendid things to do in Laguna Beach

For the uninitiated, Laguna Beach is Southern California at its most postcard-worthy, a stretch of the Orange County coastline filled with frothy waves, winding canyons and afternoon beachgoers. Yet it doesn’t take long to realize that it’s not just Laguna Beach’s sand that’s worth digging into. Laguna Beach, for instance, is art. The modern history of the beachside community often zeroes in on its artistic legacy. And for good reason. Plein air artists — that is, those dedicated to painting outdoors and capturing the beauty of a landscape or a moment — are believed to have begun descending upon the region in the late 1880s. In the early 1900s, it was plein air artists who established the Laguna Beach Art Assn., which ultimately led to the founding of the Laguna Art Museum. And today, Laguna Beach stages two of Southern California’s most cherished art events. The Festival of the Arts, home to the summer tradition that is the Pageant of the Masters, and the Sawdust Art Festival continue to define Laguna Beach as an art-forward …
