Coinbase to lay off 14 percent of workforce over AI concerns

Crypto exchange Coinbase is laying off 14 percent of its workforce. The decision has been made public by CEO Brian Armstrong. In a post on X, he explained that the layoffs are mainly due to two concerns: Bear market, and AI. “Coinbase is well-capitalized, has diversified revenue streams, and is well-positioned to weather any storm,” he wrote. “However, our business is still volatile from quarter to quarter […] we’re currently in a down market and need to adjust our cost structure.” Mashable Light Speed Cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin and Ethereum, are currently recovering after a sharp downturn that started late last year. The price of Bitcoin is currently at about $81,400, down from its highs of about $127,000 in August 2025. This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed. Armstrong also explained that AI is changing how the company works. “Over the past year, I’ve watched engineers use AI to ship in days what used to take a team weeks (…) all of this has led us to an inflection point, …

Noah Berger/FR34727 AP hide caption toggle caption Noah Berger/FR34727 AP Meta will lay off 10% of its staff in May, according to an internal memo which was published by Bloomberg. A Meta spokesperson confirmed the report’s accuracy to NPR. The layoffs will take place on May 20 and affect some 8,000 workers. Meta will also not hire for 6,000 open roles that it had intended to fill. In the memo, Meta’s chief people officer Janelle Gale wrote, “We’re doing this as part of our continued effort to run the company more efficiently and to allow us to offset the other investments we’re making. This is not an easy tradeoff and it will mean letting go of people who have made meaningful contributions to Meta during their time here.” Calling it “unwelcome news” that “puts everyone in an uneasy state,” Gale wrote, confirming the layoffs to employees now “is the best path forward, given the circumstances.” Meta and other …

Former Meta Contractor Sama to Lay off More Than 1,000 Workers in Kenya

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — A company that was sued by Facebook content moderators in Kenya over poor working conditions said Thursday that more than 1,000 workers will be laid off after Meta, Facebook’s parent company, ended its contract. Meta and its local contractor Sama have been in court since 2022 after former content moderators accused them of paying low wages and not offering sufficient mental health support. Sama has since changed its business model and stopped offering content moderation services to Meta, but has remained focused on services such as AI data labeling for the tech giant. Sama said in a statement Thursday that it received formal notice from Meta to end a “major engagement at its Nairobi office.” Sama said it has issued a formal layoff notice that would affect 1,108 staffers, adding that it was “actively supporting affected employees with care and respect.” In 2023 some 200 former content moderators sued Sama over the exploitation of workers by offering low pay, little mental health support for the grueling work they do, and long …

Amazon Accused of Hiding Worker’s Death for a Week, Making Employees Keep Working as Corpse Lay on Floor

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech Amazon’s warehouse operations have long struggled with high rates of injury. A 2024 investigation led by Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions member Bernie Sanders accused the company of pushing for higher productivity at the cost of employee safety, in conclusions Amazon vehemently denied at the time. But even in the case of a worker’s death, managers are being instructed to tell employees to look away. At least, that’s according to a startling new investigation by the Western Edge, which found that Amazon tried to keep the April 6 death of a worker at its distribution center in Troutdale, Oregon, from being publicized. The outlet is the first to report on the death one week later. Worse yet, an employee, who was given the pseudonym Sam, told the outlet that despite seeing a “body form laying lifeless,” his supervisor told them to “please get back to work.” A woman reportedly ran over to the individual in distress …

The TV was on and the milk was still warming. He lay dead among piles of cash

In early 1972 pensioner Stan James was discovered dead at his Swansea home – his hands and feet tied, a gag stuffed in his mouth, and his body bearing the marks of a savage beating. Detectives believed whoever was responsible had stamped on his head during the assault. Cash was scattered across the floor and beside the body of the 79-year-old lay an open, empty safe. The television remained switched on and a pan of milk sat warming on the hob ready for his customary evening mug of Horlicks. All the hallmarks pointed to a burglary that had gone catastrophically wrong. Police launched a substantial murder inquiry, with investigations stretching as far as London, yet as days turned to weeks and months those responsible evaded justice. Nearly eight years to the day after the killing, however, two men found themselves in the dock charged with murdering the retired greengrocer. The presiding judge – the celebrated Welsh soldier-turned-barrister Sir Tasker Watkins VC – reportedly dubbed the pair “Jones the Sex” and “Jones the Grass” to tell …

New Mandelson files lay bare what went wrong in Downing Street – POLITICO

The files show Mandelson asked for a £547,201 severance payment after his sacking (he got £75,000), and told the FCDO’s Chief People Officer Mark Power in September that his “chief concern” was arriving back with “maximum dignity and minimum media intrusion.” “[Labour MPs] are more preoccupied with the £500,000,” said a third Labour MP loyal to Starmer. “What kind of person asks for that?” But this is only one step on the road for Starmer’s No. 10, and for possible questions about the prime minister’s judgement. The government has yet to publish extensive WhatsApp and email communications between Mandelson and Starmer’s ministers and aides, not just about his appointment and dismissal but about broader politics, relationships and strategy. Downing Street also announced on Wednesday that it will review the separate national security vetting system. | Paul Ellis/AFP via Getty Images Wednesday’s files show the concern that the breadth of this planned publication — forced in a vote by the opposition Conservative Party — sparked in No. 10. As Starmer prepared to agree to the transparency …

MFA Boston Says It Didn’t ‘Disproportionately’ Lay Off People of Color

MFA Boston Says It Didn’t ‘Disproportionately’ Lay Off People of Color

On Thursday night, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston issued a lengthy explanation about a recent round of layoffs that drew controversy, in part because many claimed the cuts unfairly targeted curators of color. The museum denied that this was the case. “All along, we took steps to ensure that cuts would not disproportionately impact any groups based on their background or identity,” wrote director Pierre Terjanian in a statement on the museum’s website. “One third of our entire staff identified as people of color prior to the restructuring—and those numbers are the same today.” Related Articles Terjanian said that exactly 6.3 percent of the MFA’s staff had been cut, with 33 workers laid off and 489 workers remaining. “To address a grave and unsustainable structural deficit, we have taken the painful step of reducing our staff,” Terjanian wrote. He said the layoffs were “the result of a thorough review of all aspects of the Museum’s operations.” Speaking to Kim Córdova for an article for the Boston Art Review, a union representative said the workers’ …
