British man accused of leading al Shabaab terrorist fighters in Somalia appears in court | UK News

A Briton has appeared in court accused of leading a group of fighters from the al Shabaab terrorist group in Somalia. Prosecutors allege Jermaine Grant, who was born in London, joined al Shabaab commando training camps, becoming a platoon leader and taking part in battles in Somalia. The 43-year-old is charged with directing the activities of al Shabaab between December 2007 and January 2010. He is also accused of two counts of possessing an AK-47 assault rifle for terrorist purposes and three counts of attending one of the group’s training camps within a similar timeframe. He attended Westminster Magistrates’ Court via videolink from HMP Frankland on Thursday, but did not enter pleas. District judge Hina Rai said Grant’s case was “too serious” to be dealt with by a magistrates’ court, and remanded him into custody to appear at the Old Bailey on 1 May. Al Shabaab, which has been linked to al Qaeda, was proscribed as a terrorist organisation by the UK in March 2010 over its violent campaign “employing a range of terrorist tactics …

Current and past Commissioners to convene leading clean energy experts at European Sustainable Energy Week 2026

The European Commission has unveiled the programme and launched the registration for the European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) 2026. This year’s European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) event marks a special milestone: 20 years of bringing Europe’s energy community together to shape ‘A clean, secure and competitive Energy Union’ – as emphasized by this edition’s theme. Through a co-created programme resulting from an open call, EUSEW gathers leading clean energy voices along with high-level speakers, such as Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jørgensen(pictured below). A major highlight this year will be a 9 June panel, bringing together former European Commissioners like Andris Piebalgs, Günther Oettinger and Kadri Simson, who shaped Europe’s energy policy, to discuss – together with the current Commissioner Dan Jørgensen – how the continent’s priorities have evolved and what must come next amid a changing geopolitical and economic landscape. The main pillars of the European Sustainable Energy Week 2026: The EUSEW Policy Conference is the central hub of the event, held in a hybrid format in Brussels – at the European Commission conference center …

Climate Organization Behind Anti-ICE Protests Is Leading May 1 School Walkout Plan, Parent Group Reports

Authored by Aaron Gifford via The Epoch Times (emphasis ours), One of the main organizations behind the recent protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations is encouraging children to walk out of class en masse next month to help promote its agenda, which includes achieving what it said are “Eco-socialism, [a] multi-racial democracy, and Green New Deal legislation,” according to a April 8 report by representatives of parent group Defending Education. Organized by the Sunrise Movement, hundreds of young climate activists march to the White House to demand that U.S. President Joe Biden work to make the Green New Deal into law in Washington, DC, on June 28, 2021. Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images The Sunrise Movement, during its March 17 online membership meeting, called on schools to “train up” employees and students to disrupt the federal government ahead of planned May 1 “May Day” protests as part of an ongoing “political revolution” to “structurally change the foundations of this country,” according to slides Defending Education, a nonprofit opposing indoctrination in classrooms, obtained from a tipster …

Tobacco is still the leading cause of death. What does that say about enacting bans?

Most people know that. Even smokers think smoking is bad for one’s health. But most people don’t know just how bad it is. More people in the United States die every year from smoking than from alcohol, illegal drug use, car accidents, suicides and murders combined. Cigarette smoking costs an estimated US$240 billion annually in health care costs, which harm not only smokers but also nonsmokers, communities and the economy. Smoking is the top preventable cause of death and disease in the U.S. and worldwide. The number of smokers in the U.S. has declined from 41% in 1944 to 11% in 2024. However, over 25 million Americans still smoke. This drop is partly the result of many smoking laws enacted in the past 50 years. They include national bans on cigarette advertising on television and …

British man in court for leading fighters in Somalia-based Islamist terror group | UK News

A British man has appeared in court accused of fighting as a platoon leader for Somalia-based Islamist terrorist group Al Shabaab. Jermaine Grant, 43, is charged with directing Al Shabaab, attending commando training camps in the southern port city of Kismayu, in Somalia, and possession of an AK47 assault rifle for terrorist purposes during battles in the east African country. British prosecutors said the charges relate to Grant’s alleged involvement with the armed group, which has been linked to al Qaeda, in 2008 and 2009. “These are serious charges and come as the result of a long-running investigation,” acting commander Kris Wright, acting commander of Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) London said. “This case shows we will always pursue anyone suspected of being involved in terrorist activity, no matter where in the world or how long ago it is alleged to have taken place.” Grant appeared in the dock at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, wearing a yellow and green jumpsuit and flanked by two police officers. He spoke to confirm his name and date of …

Leading While Autistic | Psychology Today

“I want to be a better leader to autistic people.” “I want to know how to manage autistic workers.” When I started teaching and presenting on neurodiversity inclusion in the workplace, I kept seeing this statement as the reason for attendees’ interest in my workshops. That statement did not just come from CEOs and managers. It just as often came from early career professionals in their first positions and from college students—people who had not yet managed anyone in their careers. A few wanted to know how to be better peers and allies. Nobody ever wondered how to best support an autistic leader. And yet, autistic leaders not only exist, but in organizations that welcome different types of talent, they thrive. Philips, a healthcare technology company headquartered in Amsterdam, has a more-than-130-year history of commitment to innovation. It is also a company that appreciates and supports neurodivergent talent and neurodivergent leadership. Autistic leaders, in their own words For example, Ben Gorissen built a 35-year career with Philips; he is currently the product safety risk management …

These Are the 4 Artemis II Astronauts Leading the Historic Return to the Moon

The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration is about to write a new chapter in the history of space exploration. The agency is preparing for the launch of Artemis II, a mission that will mark the return of crewed flights around the moon after more than half a century. In addition to its technical relevance, the project stands out for integrating a crew that symbolizes a new stage in terms of representation: It will include the first woman, the first Black person, and the first non-US astronaut to travel to the lunar environment. The names of the members were announced a little more than three years ago. At that time, then-NASA administrator Bill Nelson said, “The Artemis II crew represents thousands of people working tirelessly to take us to the stars. This is the crew of humanity. Each has his or her own story, but together they embody our credo: E pluribus unum, or ‘Out of many, one.’” After several postponements, the launch is scheduled for April 1. According to NASA, approximately eight minutes after …

Paper Finds That Leading AI Chatbots Like ChatGPT and Claude Remain Incredibly Sycophantic, Resulting in Twisted Effects on Users

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech Your AI chatbot isn’t neutral. Trust its advice at your own risk. A striking new study, conducted by researchers at Stanford University and published last week in the journal Science, confirmed that human-like chatbots are prone to obsequiously affirm and flatter users leaning on the tech for advice and insight — and that this behavior, known as AI sycophancy, is a “prevalent and harmful” function endemic to the tech that can validate users’ erroneous or destructive ideas and promote cognitive dependency. “AI sycophancy is not merely a stylistic issue or a niche risk, but a prevalent behavior with broad downstream consequences,” the authors write, adding that “although affirmation may feel supportive, sycophancy can undermine users’ capacity for self-correction and responsible decision-making.” The study examined 11 different large language models, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT-powering GPT-4o and GPT-5, Anthropic’s Claude, Google’s Gemini, multiple Meta Llama models, and Deepseek. Researchers tested the bots by peppering them with queries gathered from sources like open-ended …
