Lauren James inspires Chelsea to Women’s League Cup victory over Man Utd

Lauren James inspires Chelsea to Women’s League Cup victory over Man Utd

Beever-Jones had come on at half-time and as she made her way on to the pitch, United’s assistant coach Dan Bale appeared to say something to her while covering his mouth. If it was an attempt to put her off, it did not work. United, who were competing in their first League Cup final, will no doubt feel disappointed they did not do more to test Chelsea’s makeshift defence in the second half. Chelsea were without Ellie Carpenter, who is competing at the Asia Cup with Australia, and Naomi Girma, who has a minor injury. Kadeisha Buchanan was making her first start after returning from an anterior cruciate ligament injury but could play only 62 minutes before she was replaced by Nathalie Bjorn, who was making her first appearance since December 2. But Bjorn lasted just five minutes, with the defender picking up a calf injury and leaving the pitch in tears. The lack of options on Chelsea’s bench meant three of their back four were playing out of position, but United failed to test …

Manchester City ease into League Cup final after lacklustre Newcastle run out of fizz

Manchester City ease into League Cup final after lacklustre Newcastle run out of fizz

A six-point deficit to Arsenal in the Premier League is not quite a state of affairs that calls for Manchester City to throw everything at the cups, but we might be approaching that scenario. City are certainly strong favourites to reach the League Cup final, taking a 2-0 lead into tonight’s home second leg against holders Newcastle United. Pep Guardiola’s team will play Arsenal at Wembley on March 22 if they progress, around a month before the teams play at the Etihad in the league. There is also a chance that they could play in the Champions League quarter-finals. This weekend looks like another significant one in the title race, with Arsenal hosting Sunderland and City travelling to Anfield where they have a grim record. Perhaps the danger to City tonight is Guardiola rotating his team with an eye on that game and being caught out. Newcastle certainly have the speed and attacking menace to trouble an unstable City defence, but they will have to improve on a dreadful away record. Across the league and …

Arsenal beat Chelsea to reach League Cup final

Arsenal beat Chelsea to reach League Cup final

Nobody connected with Arsenal will mention the Q-word in public, but if they are to win the first of four possible trophies then they need to get past a strengthened Chelsea side in this League Cup semi-final. The league leaders kick-off at the Emirates with a 3-2 advantage. Any victory in an away first leg has to be considered a good night’s work, but Arsenal came away frustrated they did not prevail by a bigger margin. Chelsea were without Reece James, Moises Caicedo and Cole Palmer at Stamford Bridge, and all three are fit again and expected to start tonight. James, Wesley Fofana, Marc Cucurella, Pedro Neto and Joao Pedro all started as substitutes against West Ham, a selection Leroy Rosenior said owed much to Champions League exertions. He may also have had an eye on tonight’s game, with the domestic cups offering Chelsea their best chance of a major trophy this season. Rosenior’s rotated side were abysmal for 45 minutes against West Ham, before his half-time changes helped them course correct and stage a …

Advantage Arsenal but Garnacho keeps alive Chelsea’s League Cup hopes

Rosenior refused to blame Sánchez for the errors and said he was responsible for the goalkeeper’s uneasiness on the ball. “I think the first goal was disappointing,” Rosenior said. “[But] it’s a team goal. It’s not just on Rob. I’m asking Rob to do things that he hasn’t done before. I said to him before the game, and I made this really clear, when my players make mistakes, I am accountable. That’s on me. “He made a save in the second half that was absolutely world class. That could have put us out of the tie. He will improve in terms of his understanding. He’s had a very good season. There were very, very good moments with him. I’ll stay positive with him, as I will with all the group. My job is to help them, not to blame them. “That’s Rob’s first game with me. I’ve had two days to work with him. What you’ll know with me is I protect my players. I’m asking him to do things. If he makes a mistake, …
