Beef Creator Lee Sung Jin and Star Charles Melton on Season 2

Beef Creator Lee Sung Jin and Star Charles Melton on Season 2

When Beef creator Lee Sung Jin finally settled on the premise for season two of the hit anthology series, he had one actor in mind — Charles Melton. Lee decided to take matters into his own hands, calling up Gold House founder Bing Chen to cash in a favor. The writer-director asked to be seated next to Melton at a dinner they’d both be attending to honor the actor, so he could pitch him the second season. “I remember just being immensely flattered because I didn’t know he went to the extent that he went to sit next to me,” Melton tells The Hollywood Reporter during the show’s season two junket. “It was amazing to have Lee Sung Jin, Sonny, the creator, show me a picture of my face and say, ‘This is in the writer’s room and we’re writing it for you,’” Melton continues. “I was completely astonished.” Beef’s second season leaves behind the parking lot feuds, instead focusing on two couples, one millennial (Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan) and one Gen Z (Melton …

The Met is Treating Lee Krasner as Pollock’s Equal—Will Market Follow?

The Met is Treating Lee Krasner as Pollock’s Equal—Will Market Follow?

Editor’s Note: This story originally appeared in On Balance, the ARTnews newsletter about the art market and beyond. Sign up here to receive it every Wednesday. The Metropolitan Museum of Art says its upcoming exhibition, “Krasner and Pollock: Past Continuous,” is a “story of equals.” Set to open in October, the survey brings together 120 works  by more than 80 lenders, with an explicit focus on considering Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner “on their own terms” while also placing them in relation to one another.  Related Articles That is the museum’s version of the story. But the art market’s version is harsher, simpler, and much more familiar: Pollock remains one of the great trophies of 20th-century art. Krasner, his wife, widow, and interlocutor, and one of the most formidable painters of the New York School, still has to fight for every inch of price recognition. The price gap between these two long dead artists is sizeable: Pollock’s auction record sits at $61.2 million, while Krasner’s is just under 20 percent of that figure, at $11.7 million, set at Sotheby’s in 2019 …

Japanese Gothic by Kylie Lee Baker

Japanese Gothic by Kylie Lee Baker

Some houses are simply old. The house at the center of Japanese Gothic by Kylie Lee Baker is something else entirely. Hidden at the bottom of an incline in Chiran, Kagoshima Prefecture, veiled by sword ferns and wild ginger, ringed by flowers that should not bloom in the same season, it has a heartbeat. Not a metaphorical one. The walls drink sound. The window that looks out to the yard is not always there. And a room that measures six feet longer from the inside than the outside should end any reasonable debate about whether the house is normal. Somehow, it only makes things worse. Baker has built a career writing Japan through a lens of darkness and myth. Her debut YA duology, The Keeper of Night and The Empress of Time, followed a half-British, half-Japanese Shinigami navigating the supernatural politics of the Meiji Era. Bat Eater and Other Names for Cora Zeng followed. With Japanese Gothic, she makes the leap into adult horror, and the shift is palpable. The writing is denser, the damage …

How Jamie Lee Curtis’ ‘boring’ approach to health in her 60s is the ultimate longevity secret

How Jamie Lee Curtis’ ‘boring’ approach to health in her 60s is the ultimate longevity secret

Jamie Lee Curtis may be just a couple of years away from her 70th birthday, but she could be mistaken for being much younger. The 67-year-old actress has a refreshing attitude to ageing, saying she wants to look her age, despite working in an industry where actors are often undergoing cosmetic procedures to try and appear more youthful. Plastic surgery is something Jamie tried for herself at the age of just 25 after being criticised for having “baggy eyes”, and said she “regretted it immediately” and wouldn’t go under the knife again. Instead, the Halloween star focuses on a consistent commitment to living well, prioritising healthy eating and regular exercise over fad diets or punishing routines – and it’s paying off! To understand more about Jamie Lee Curtis’ wellness routine, we caught up with Colin Raney, a certified personal trainer and founder of AI personal training app Ray, who says it is the Hollywood star’s consistency that is the key to her healthy ageing. © Getty ImagesJamie Lee Curtis follows a healthy diet and lifestyle …

Lee Miller and Cecil Beaton Album Acquired by Bodleian Libraries

Lee Miller and Cecil Beaton Album Acquired by Bodleian Libraries

An annotated photographic scrapbook—often called a “daybook”—featuring newspaper clippings and hundreds of photos by Lee Miller and Cecil Beaton has been acquired by the Bodleian Libraries at the University of Oxford. The album was compiled by British Vogue darkroom assistant Roland Haupt between 1943 and ’49; Haupt developed film by both Miller and Beaton when they worked for Vogue magazine during this time period. The deal was brokered by the London-based photography dealer Michael Hoppen, who was approached about nine months ago by Haupt’s descendants. (Haupt died in the mid-1960s.) Hoppen declined to share the sales price with ARTnews, explaining that the family preferred that their identity and the details of the sale remain private for the time being. Below are spreads from the album, showing photographs by both Miller and Beaton, war-related and otherwise, as well as related newspaper clippings. “My Favorite Photographer” Image Credit: Courtesy Bodleian Libraries, University of Oxford Haupt dedicates the book to Miller, who he tenderly refers to as “my favorite photographer.” He writes this next to a portrait of …

EPA head Lee Zeldin gives keynote speech at climate skeptic conference

EPA head Lee Zeldin gives keynote speech at climate skeptic conference

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin gave the keynote speech Wednesday at a conference hosted by a climate denial group. Zeldin told the attendees of the conservative Heartland Institute’s conference to “celebrate vindication.” He claimed that in the past, a “cabal” was deciding which climate model the U.S. would base its climate forecasts on. “What happened for years and decades in this country is that the elite, the ruling class, the people who had run the agencies, the people who have decided that they are in charge of the science, the politicians, the biggest grifters, there would be a cabal that would decide exactly which model is the chosen model, which methodology is the higher methodology,” he said. Before Zeldin’s speech, Heartland Institute President James Taylor argued Wednesday that increasing carbon dioxide concentrations would actually be beneficial. Carbon dioxide is one of several greenhouse gases that is heating up the planet. There is a consensus in the scientific community that human activity, especially the burning of fossil fuels, is heating up the planet via the release of planet-warming …

Lee Miller Scrapbook Found—and More Art News

Lee Miller Scrapbook Found—and More Art News

The Headlines STICKING IT TO HITLER. A previously unseen trove of World War II–era photographs by Lee Miller and Cecil Beaton has surfaced in a carefully preserved, personal scrapbook by their former assistant, Roland Haupt, reports the  Times of London. The discovery of this “empirical time capsule” is being celebrated as one of the greatest photographic records of the pivotal period in world history, and yet, for decades, it sat out of sight in the home of Haupt’s descendants. That is about to change, as the University of Oxford’s Bodleian Libraries has managed to acquire the book, which includes the iconic photo of Miller in Hitler’s bathtub—her way of “sticking two fingers up at Hitler,” according to Miller’s son. In a sign of their deep trust in their assistant, both Miller and Beaton sent their films to Haupt in London to be printed from their various, far-flung locations. He would then forward their images to magazines like Vogue . It was a surprise to discover that, “knowing what she had in the can, [Miller] was entrusting her film to this man,” said dealer Michael Hoppen. “He has …

The 26-year-old’s exit from the group was announced in a statement released on the fan platform Weverse Friday afternoon Korean local time. “After a long period of careful and thoughtful discussion with Mark regarding his future activities, we have mutually agreed to conclude his exclusive contract as of April 8,” the statement reads. “Mark will conclude all activities as a member of NCT, including NCT 127 and NCT Dream.” Lee has been a member of the now-24-member boy group NCT since its inception in 2016. ‘To Share Is Our Duty’ | Hermione Lee

‘To Share Is Our Duty’ | Hermione Lee

The Uncollected Letters of Virginia Woolf, weighing in at a thousand pages and containing over 1,400 letters (additions to the 3,766 letters that were published in six volumes, edited by Nigel Nicolson and Joanne Trautmann, between 1975 and 1980), is arranged alphabetically by correspondent. The first entry is a letter of 1931 to the then assistant keeper of the National Portrait Gallery, Charles Kingsley Adams, about a series of mini-biographies he had commissioned, each short enough to fit on a postcard, of famous figures whose portraits were in the gallery. Woolf chose George Eliot and said of her that “she stretched the capacity of fiction” to encompass “a large mind brooding over life.” The last entry, in 1936, is to Stefan Zweig, who, in exile from Austria and living in London, was organizing a public eightieth birthday greeting for Sigmund Freud, and had asked Woolf if she would add her name, alongside Thomas Mann, H.G. Wells, Jules Romains, and Romain Rolland. She agreed. These two short notes show the astonishing range of connections and commitments …
