Between travelling across the country for his day-to-day engagements, the King is often on his feet. While he’s largely stepped back from the saddle in recent years, he swears by a different form of exercise to make your legs strong enough for riding – and you don’t need to go to the gym for it. From dogs and bats, to roaches and desert lizards, the natural world is a constant source of inspiration for engineers. But while most robotics researchers use animals as a base for their machine’s movement, an ambitious team of Duke University engineers set out to make something entirely new: a robot whose form factor and movement aren’t derived from biology, but from the universe’s underlying physics. Say hello to Argus, a 20-legged, blob-looking robot capable of seeing in all directions at the same time and able to move almost instantly in any direction. The amorphous-looking sphere has no top or bottom, no left …

I Hiked Using Robot Legs in the Grand Canyon. I Didn’t Even Need My Cane

The Hypershell X Ultra S exoskeleton is designed to optimize your performance, whether you’re hiking or biking. Adam Doud/CNET I’m in Arizona, traversing a narrow path in the Grand Canyon, with outdoor exoskeleton maker Hypershell’s new $1,999 Hypershell X Ultra S strapped to my waist and legs. I’m waiting to become a superhero, or at the very least, gain the ability to join the Alien franchise and toss a giant xenomorph extraterrestrial out of an airlock, but I can barely haul my 50-year-old, 270-pound body up this 100-foot trail climb.  I look up at my counterpart, my 15-year-old daughter, and I’m filled with a whole lot of pride, and if I am being completely honest with myself, a bit of jealousy. This climb is no problem for her, but I’m the robot. I’m supposed to be the one flying through this. It’s just not fair. The climb continues.  Climbing is a part of hiking (or so I’m told), so we came down this trail, a sort of natural staircase if you will, just to see …

Puffy legs, heavy aches, rippled skin: what is lipedema? | Well actually

Puffy legs, heavy aches, rippled skin: what is lipedema? | Well actually

The first thing Becca Golden noticed was her pants. Throughout the spring and summer of 2023, her pants stopped fitting. Her legs became puffy, with a rippled texture and heavy ache. Within a year, the 32-year-old, Austin-based podcaster went up four pant sizes, gained 30lb and found herself in constant leg pain. She had always had a little bit of cellulite, she says, but while her upper body appeared mostly unchanged, now her legs seemed to belong to a “different person, overnight”. Working out with a trainer didn’t seem to help her lose weight, nor did walking more. “People would say: ‘Well, just go on a walk, you’ll feel better.’ And every time I went on the walk, I felt exhausted,” she says. Searching the internet for her symptoms, Golden came across the Lipedema Foundation, an organization focused on a condition that sounded a lot like what she was going through. What is lipedema? The Lipedema Foundation describes lipedema as a chronic, progressive disorder in which abnormal fat tissue accumulates disproportionately in the lower body …
