BBC viewers entranced by ‘life-changing’ period drama – but it’s about to leave iPlayer

Period dramas remain one of the most popular genres of films, and there have been plenty of spectacular ones over the years, including Ammonite, which was released in 2020. The film, which was set during the 1840s, follows palaeontologist Mary Anning, who discovered several intact fossils of marine animals including the plesiosaur, and geologist Charlotte Murchison, exploring an unconfirmed romantic relationship between the two ladies. The decision to depict a same-sex relationship between the two women, which had no historical basis, divided several, including Mary’s own family, with her descendants having differing views of how she was portrayed in the film. Despite the controversy, the film mostly won over fans and critics, with the film earning several nominations, including at the BAFTAs, the GLAAD Media Awards, the London Film Critics’ Circle and the Satellite Awards. It did, however, manage to win three awards at the San Francisco International Film Festival and the Women Film Critics Circle Awards. Selma Blair’s life-changing service dog helped her overcome ‘daunting’ MS struggles – exclusive

Selma Blair’s most loyal companion is not fully versed in red-carpet etiquette. At the Vanity Fair Oscar Party last year, Scout the yellow Labrador showed perhaps too keen an interest in the actress Laverne Cox as she and Selma caught up. “He almost pawed her Mugler,” Selma tells HELLO!. “She was regal about it, but… paws off the finery, Scout!” Selma, 53, shot to fame after appearing in the 1999 film Cruel Intentions, going on to star in Legally Blonde and the Hellboy franchise. Two decades later, her appearance at the Academy Awards in 2019, when the visibly emotional actress took to the red carpet with the help of a diamond-encrusted walking stick, made headlines around the world. © FilmMagicSelma Blair and Scout are familiar faces on the red carpet It came just four months after she announced on Instagram that she had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, an incurable autoimmune condition that causes the body to attack the nerves in the brain and spinal cord. “I am disabled. Coronation Street airs life-changing revelations for Ben and Steve

There was a bombshell reveal on today’s Coronation Street (Sunday 5 April) which would change Ben Driscoll’s (played by Aaron McCusker) life forever. Viewers already knew that Ben is actually the son of Jim McDonald (Charlie Lawson) after his mother, Maggie (Pauline McLynn) had an affair with him previously. It would mean he is the half-brother of Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) and that the man he thought was his dad, Alan Driscoll (Aidan O’Callaghan), isn’t related to him at all. In today’s episode, Ben was inquisitive following a clash with his mother accidentally dropping a big hint that only she was his flesh and blood, implying his dad wasn’t. Want to see this content? Should you get a cat? Five expert tips for making life-changing decisions | Well actually

Should you get a cat? Five expert tips for making life-changing decisions | Well actually

I love cats. I’d been idly keeping an eye out for a less allergenic breed, when bam – a kitten became available. Suddenly I had to decide whether to take the leap. Even though I’d been considering cat ownership for a while, I felt anxious. I mulled over all the responsibilities: vet bills, stubborn allergies, years of commitment. One big sticking point was travel. Having a cat would be rewarding, but did I want it right now if it meant I couldn’t decide on a whim to book a cheap last minute flight to another city? Did I want to buy Fancy Feast, or stay fancy-free? Making choices can be difficult when the options are not clearly better or worse than each other, said contemporary philosopher Ruth Chang in a 2014 Ted Talk. For example, should you take an exciting promotion that will consume your weekends? Should you have a child, which would reshape your identity and daily life, or remain childfree and preserve your autonomy? Such options have different kinds of value but at …

EastEnders reveals life-changing epilepsy storyline for Nugget Gulati

A forthcoming EastEnders storyline will see Davinder “Nugget” Gulati (Juhaim Rasul Choudhury) learn that he has developed epilepsy as a result of his recent head trauma. The teenager’s injuries were sustained following an altercation with his own father, Ravi (Aaron Thiara), who was under the influence of drugs. Having been spiked by vengeful Nicola and Harry Mitchell (Laura Doddington and Elijah Holloway), he fell into the pit at the garage and began to suffer intense hallucinations of late father Nish Panesar (Navin Chowdhry). Lashing out towards the villain, he was unaware that Nugget was actually the one in the firing line. Nugget (Juhaim Rasul Choudhury) was hospitalised after an assault. BBC/Jack Barns/Kieron McCarron In today’s episode, as he began to take driving lessons, the youngster seemed to zone out behind the wheel. Ravi warned him to stay focussed, unaware that he was actually suffering an abstence seizure and was briefly lapsing in consciousness. Later, as his parents began to argue, Nugget became disorientated again and suffered another seizure. AddRadio Times as a Preferred Source on Google …

‘Walking in the Lake District drizzle rewired my head’: readers’ life-changing trips | Health and fitness holidays

Winning tip: Lake District walks helped me to switch off I did a circuit of the Old Man of Coniston in the Lake District on a grey, drizzly weekday in October and it quietly rewired my head. I’d been running on always-on mode, and that climb forces you to slow down and breathe properly. From the Coppermines valley up to the ridge, then along the rocky summit and back via Goat’s Water, it’s rugged without being showy. The weather kept the crowds away, and the low cloud made the tarn feel like a secret. I came home muddy, soaked and weirdly calm, and started making space for long walks again.Brandon Kindell I binned the car after cycling in Italy The baptistry in the Piazza dei Miracoli, Pisa. Photograph: Lorenzo Bovi/Alamy A couple of years ago, after turning 60 and retiring, I invested in a simple but nice bicycle, and participated in a “silver Giro d’Italia”, organised by a cycling club in Milan. Where to take life-changing pole dance classes in Los Angeles

Where to take life-changing pole dance classes in Los Angeles

The pandemic led me to the pole. Let me explain. Prior to 2021, I had never been strong in my life. In fact, I was pretty damn weak. It was so bad that from the moment I booked a flight, I would start actively worrying about having to lift my carry-on into the overhead compartment by myself. As someone who is self-reliant in most other aspects of my life, that sense of physical helplessness felt embarrassing. Like many people, the pandemic’s shelter-in-place mandate made me start to go stir crazy. That’s how I found myself considering doing something I had never given much thought to before: dedicating time, energy and money to fitness. I started out by getting a basic gym membership with a friend. As long as I had an accountability partner to work out with, I was consistent. But once our schedules no longer aligned, I found myself returning to a sedentary lifestyle. Now that I knew how it felt to be strong, it didn’t feel as good to go back to having …
