$1.4B saved: Massachusetts locks in cheaper offshore wind power

Massachusetts has activated long-term contracts for Vineyard Wind, the state’s first utility-scale offshore wind project. Officials say the move will stabilize prices for 20 years and cut a projected $1.4 billion from customer electricity bills over that period. The contracts, signed by utilities on behalf of customers, are expected to deliver average direct savings of about 1.4 cents per kilowatt-hour. That’s less than half the peak power prices New England saw during a cold snap this past winter. The timing matters. During that winter, Vineyard Wind was already feeding electricity into the grid and competing in wholesale markets, and, according to the state, it consistently undercut other sources on price. Now that the contracts are in effect, those lower prices are locked in. It started producing electricity in January 2024, after construction began in late 2022. The project reached mechanical completion in Q1 2026. In 2025 alone, Vineyard Wind installed 624 MW …

Analysis:BOJ locks in June rate hike in a risky bet that nothing gets worse

TOKYO, April 30 : The Bank of Japan effectively committed to a June rate hike this week as it talked up the risks of an inflation overshoot, a gambit that rests on a shaky assumption the Iran war won’t significantly worsen the economic outlook. Unusually blunt signals of a near-term rate hike highlight the BOJ’s growing concern the energy shock could trigger second-round effects that may leave it behind the curve in addressing the risk of too-high inflation, analysts say. “The message from the BOJ was that it was really focused on upside risks to inflation,” said Tetsuya Inoue, executive economist at Sony Financial Group. “The BOJ made clear that it could raise rates to combat inflationary risks, even if growth undershoots its baseline scenario,” said Inoue, who predicts a hike in June. The BOJ kept rates steady at 0.75 per cent on Tuesday but dropped clear hints the June 15-16 meeting will be live, including through three dissenters on the nine-member board who proposed an immediate hike to 1.0 per cent. Shedding its typically …

This Windows setting locks your PC when you walk away — and more people should use it

We’ve all been there: We’re working away on our PC, maybe in a coffee shop or library, and we have to leave it for a moment, to grab our order or to greet an old friend. You can lock it manually, but I know I can often forget. Even at home, leaving my PC unlocked could end up with someone in my family seeing what I’m working on. Maybe that’s not an issue for you, but I’m guessing it could be. Luckily for people like us, Windows has a built-in feature called Dynamic Lock that handles this for you automatically. It pairs your PC with your smartphone via Bluetooth and locks the screen within about 30 seconds of your phone moving out of range. Now you don’t have to remember to do this manually and can stop beating yourself up about it. While Dynamic Lock has been around since about 2017 via the Windows 10 Creators Update, most of us don’t even know it’s there. Here’s how to set it up and use it. Related …

Toyota locks in power from a massive new Texas solar farm

Photo: Avantus Avantus and Toyota Tsusho America have completed construction of a 159 MWdc solar project in Texas, adding another large-scale clean energy asset to the state’s fast-growing solar fleet. The Norton Solar Project, in Runnels County southwest of Fort Worth, reached “substantial completion” in October 2025 and is now operational. The project’s full output is tied to a long-term virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) between Toyota Tsusho America and Toyota Motor North America. The VPPA means Toyota Motor North America will be able to match its electricity use with the output from the Norton solar plant, supporting its broader clean energy goals. Corporate buyers like Toyota have increasingly turned to VPPAs to secure renewable energy without directly owning generation assets. Toyota Tsusho America, the Toyota Group’s trading and project development arm that structures energy deals, partnered with Avantus to lock in clean power for Toyota Motor North America. Brown and Cummings have started together in the second row in the wins over England and France, but both went off injured during Saturday’s 50-40 victory over the French which gives them a shot at the title going into the final day on Saturday.
