China set to pass new ethnic minority law, prioritise use of Mandarin language

BEIJING: China is expected to pass a law on a “shared” national identity among the country’s 55 ethnic minority groups on Thursday (Mar 12), a move critics say will further erode the identity of people who are not the majority Han Chinese and risk making anyone challenging that “unity” a separatist punishable by law. Called “Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress”, the ethnic minority law aims to forge national unity and advance the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) at its core, a draft copy of the law showed. It is due to be passed at the closing session of the annual meeting of the National People’s Congress, China’s legislature. Officially, China has 56 officially recognised ethnic groups, dominated by the Han Chinese, who account for more than 91 per cent of the country’s 1.4 billion people. China’s ethnic minority populations – including Tibetans, Mongols, Hui, Manchus, and Uyghurs – are concentrated in regions that together cover roughly half of the country’s land area, much of it rich in natural resources. …

Women remain minority among Spain online gamblers but participation rising rapidly

Women remain minority among Spain online gamblers but participation rising rapidly

Women still account for a relatively small portion of Spain’s online gambling market, yet their numbers are climbing quickly. New figures from Spain’s Directorate General for Gambling Regulation show that women represented 16.9% of online gamblers in 2024. Even with that imbalance, regulators say the pace of growth suggests a noticeable generational change in a sector that has long been dominated by men. Authorities recorded 1.99 million active online gamblers across licensed platforms last year. Among them were 335,627 women. While it remains a minority share, the government analysis notes that female participation has been trending upward for several years and accelerated sharply between 2023 and 2024. Women remain a small but fast growing share of online gamblers in Spain Age data from the report highlights how strongly younger adults are shaping the trend. Nearly 60% of female online gamblers in Spain are under 35, giving the group a distinctly younger profile than the broader gambling population. The fastest expansion is happening among the youngest players entering the market. The group of women grew by …

Depression and anxiety linked to stronger inflammation in sexual minority adults compared to heterosexuals

Depression and anxiety linked to stronger inflammation in sexual minority adults compared to heterosexuals

A new study published in the journal Brain, Behavior, and Immunity provides evidence that sexual minority adults may experience a distinct physiological reaction to mental health challenges compared to heterosexual adults. The findings indicate that while depression and anxiety are more common in sexual minority populations, these conditions are also accompanied by stronger inflammatory responses for this group. Health disparities affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and other non-heterosexual individuals are well-documented in medical literature. Statistics indicate that these groups face a higher risk for chronic physical conditions like heart disease, asthma, and diabetes compared to heterosexual adults. They also report rates of anxiety and depression that are often significantly higher than those seen in the general population. Scientists often utilize the minority stress theory to explain these gaps. This framework suggests that the unique social stressors faced by marginalized groups create a burden that wears down physical health over time. A key biological mechanism that might explain how stress becomes physical illness is inflammation. While acute inflammation is a necessary immune response to heal injuries or …

Netherlands on course for minority coalition government – POLITICO

Netherlands on course for minority coalition government – POLITICO

The Netherlands may soon have a minority government after the leaders of three political parties announced on Friday that they would continue coalition talks. At a joint press conference, the leaders of the centrist D66 party — the big winner of last October’s national election — along with the center-right Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) and the liberal VVD, said they would press ahead without other partners. That configuration sidelines JA21, a hard-right party that the VVD had expressed a desire to include, but whose views on climate, immigration and Europe were a tough sell for D66. Source link

Christians a minority in the UK, newly published data reveals

Christians make up a minority of the UK population, newly published data reveals. Statistics from the Office for National Statistics based on the most recent censuses show 46.6% of the UK described themselves as ‘Christian’ in 2021, a 12.9 percentage point decrease from 59.5% in 2011. Those with no religion increased from 25.5% in 2011 to 37.65% in 2021. Muslims make up 5.97% of the population, with Hindus representing 1.59%. In the case of 5.92% of the population, religion was ‘not stated’ in their census response. Separate censuses are carried out for England and Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. The censuses for England and Wales and for Northern Ireland were carried out on 21 March 2021. Scotland’s Census was conducted on 20 March 2022. The data provides an image of how UK census data may have looked if the most recent UK censuses had been conducted with an aligned date. The National Secular Society said the collated figures further underlined the changing beliefs of the UK revealed in the individual censuses, and the need to …
