Rescuers comb waters near Bali for 5 missing after ferry blaze

JAKARTA: Rescuers combed the Lombok Strait off Indonesia’s Bali island on Thursday (Aug 13) for five people declared missing after a ferry fire that killed one and sent dozens of passengers scrambling overboard, officials said. A total of 211 people were rescued alive and brought ashore by vessels that rushed to the scene on Wednesday, including a navy ship and another ferry in the vicinity. A 19-year-old Indonesian woman was found dead. By Thursday, the effort had shifted to “the search for five passengers” unaccounted for, the search and rescue office of Mataram on Lombok island said in a statement. The ferry had been heading from Bali to Lombok when it ran into trouble in the early hours of Wednesday. “In addition to direct searches, we have also instructed ships passing through the Lombok Strait to provide initial assistance or immediately inform the command post if they find any victims,” the statement quoted search and rescue official Muhamad Hariyadi as saying. Survivor Kiky Okta Pradika, 25, told reporters in Lembar on Lombok island on Wednesday …

Skan AI raises million betting that watching how employees actually work is the missing layer of enterprise AI

Skan AI raises $63 million betting that watching how employees actually work is the missing layer of enterprise AI

Skan AI, a startup that builds what it calls a “context graph of work” by observing how employees actually perform their jobs across enterprise software, has raised $63 million in Series C funding co-led by Cathay Innovation and Dell Technologies Capital, the company announced Wednesday. Citi Ventures, Bloomberg Beta, State Farm Ventures, and Wipro Ventures also participated in the round, which brings the seven-year-old company’s total funding to roughly $120 million. Alongside the raise, Skan is announcing the general availability of two new products — Skan AI Blueprint and Skan AI Agents — that, together with its existing Skan AI Intelligence offering, form a complete platform for discovering, modeling, and ultimately automating enterprise workflows. The announcement lands at a moment of deep frustration in enterprise AI. Companies have poured billions into generative AI pilots, but the results have been dismal: Gartner research cited by the company finds that only 8% of enterprises have AI agents in production, and 95% of early implementations will require a complete redesign. Those figures echo an MIT report last year, …

I spent on my PC audio and immediately heard what I’d been missing

I spent $33 on my PC audio and immediately heard what I’d been missing

The 3.5mm headphone jack built into a laptop or desktop computer is probably good enough for most Windows 11 users. After we’ve upgraded the hardware and tweaked the software, the biggest limiting factor in perceived sound quality is actually our own hearing. That said, not every inbuilt digital-to-analog converter (DAC) or 3.5mm headphone jack is of the same quality. There’s a chance the DAC and headphone jack on your PC are good enough, and there’s a chance they aren’t. The one way to guarantee you’re getting the best audio from your Windows 11 machine is to buy a cheap USB-C DAC. Great sound quality doesn’t have to cost you a fortune. You can opt for better gear, such as the $140 Fiio K11 or the premium $550 Fiio K15, which are both relatively fancy desktop amplifiers. However, the sweet spot for the average music listener is an ultra-budget USB-C DAC and headphone amplifier, like the Fiio KA11. This is a tiny USB-C to 3.5mm headphone jack dongle that only costs $33, and it packs the …

The push to live longer has a missing piece few people are talking about

The push to live longer has a missing piece few people are talking about

Get the Well Enough newsletter with Harry Bullmore for tips on living a healthier, happier and longer life Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore I’ve spent more than three decades studying how exercise and diet keep us healthy. But one thing keeps showing up in the data: living longer and living well are not in sync. While we’ve partly solved the first one, we are lagging behind at the second. Over the past century, the average Canadian’s life expectancy has increased by 22 years, to roughly 80 for men and 84 for women. Medical and scientific research may push those numbers higher. However, the number of years we can expect to live in good health has been declining, and in Canada it now stands at about 67, down from a peak of about 70 years. That means a lot of us are on track to spend close to two decades, sometimes longer, living with chronic illness, cognitive decline or lost mobility. That gap, not lifespan …

This Bluetooth-only Marshall home speaker sounds so good, I can forgive the missing Wi-Fi

This Bluetooth-only Marshall home speaker sounds so good, I can forgive the missing Wi-Fi

pros and cons Pros Gorgeous, timeless design Excellent sound Bigger soundstage more buying choices Marshall’s Stanmore line of speakers has been my reliable music partner for six years now. I like playing songs on my mains-powered Stanmore II more than any other speaker. It runs in the background when I’m working, chilling, or just existing at home. So, I was more than excited to see if the latest model, the new Stanmore IV, was worth the upgrade.  Also: Marshall Stanmore IV vs. Sonos Era 300: I tested both to find the ultimate home speaker The fourth-gen speaker promised a more immersive experience with deeper bass and a wider soundstage, along with a more repairable design. I have now been testing it for a month, and am glad to report that it stands true to most of those promises. The Marshall Stanmore IV is still a Bluetooth-only speaker, lacking Wi-Fi or voice assistant support, unlike other smart speakers in its price range. However, it is the signature Marshall design, sound, and overall experience that’ll sway you away …

Body found in search for missing kayaker Michael Henry | UK News

The body of a missing 19-year-old kayaker has been found off Northumberland. Michael Henry was reportedly in a two-person boat when it capsized near Boulmer on the evening of 7 July. The other man swam to a buoy and was picked up by coastguard, but despite a days-long search, rescuers couldn’t find Mr Henry. Northumbria Police has now confirmed his body was located off the Blyth coast on 26 July. It has been formally identified, and a report has been sent to the coroner. Mr Henry’s family said he was a “keen sportsman who loved the outdoors” and a “much-loved son, brother, grandson, nephew, team-mate and friend”. They said the teenager – from the Rothbury area – was preparing to go travelling this summer and hoping to go to university the next academic year. Thanking emergency services, they added: “Michael will be forever in our thoughts, and we will miss him.” Read more from Sky News:Girl, 9, dies after being found injured at industrial estateFormer X Factor contestant denies murdering influencer Source link

A Blaze on an Indonesian Passenger Ferry Leaves at Least 5 Dead and Dozens Missing

SURABAYA, Indonesia (AP) — An Indonesian ferry carrying 271 people caught fire in waters off the main island of Java on Sunday, leaving at least five people dead and dozens missing as rescuers and passing vessels evacuated hundreds from the burning ship, officials said. The Mutiara Sentosa 2 ferry was traveling from Indonesia’s second-largest city of Surabaya in East Java to the city of Makassar in South Sulawesi, with 232 passengers, 39 crew members and 181 vehicles, mostly trucks, and an excavator, when the fire broke out between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. in waters off Sumenep regency, according to Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency, or Basarnas. The ferry operator, PT Atosim Lampung Pelayaran, reported the incident to the Surabaya search and rescue office about an hour later, Basarnas said in a statement. It said the company received information from the ferry’s captain that the vessel was on fire near the northern tip of Madura island, but contact was later lost. By 9:45 a.m., authorities determined the ferry was about 19 nautical miles north …
